Guilty as charged!

But he's just so ...

And how am I to resist this elvish looks + long silver hair combination, along with him being this high republic era Anakin-like character !?

I mean, they DO share some parallels - certainly enough for quite a number of people to recognize this:

Image

While Dagan may not be The Chosen One™ - like Anakin, he still:

  • comes from a background of being a slave (Well, in Dagan's case it's the (sub-)species he belongs to that is enslaved. We have no personal backstory of his in this regard, but I assume that was the reality of his life before the Jedi Order picked him up. Like with Anakin, that part of his past must have had a crucial role in shaping his personality, and why he acted the way he did.)
  • "incredibly strong with the Force"
  • "extremely talented lightsaber duelist"
  • "one of the Jedi Order's finest warriors"
  • outstanding pilot
  • impatient and prone to anger
  • great degree of confidence in his own abilities (unless he's with Santari, with her he can be vulnerable, admit to his shortcomings, and show humility)
  • arrogant and disdainful to his opponents (applies to Anakin as well, especially during his Vader days)
  • determined, stubborn & prideful to the point of rebelliousness
  • passionate emotional nature
  • amputated arm via lightsaber (and, like Anakin's, it's the right one)
  • deeply in love with a beautiful, distinctly heroic, thoughtful and wise lady, whom he idealizes and adores
  • the primary cause to his fall to the dark side is a (perceived) rejection & betrayal by said lady

Now, I reckon that is enough for saying that the comparison is definitely justified.

Just as a side-note ...

There were also some that, like me, thought he looked like an elf, which I found quite amusing:

There is definitely this elegant, majestic, and otherworldly aura of the Eldar about him - in the way he moves and talks - his whole demeanor just screams elf.

He could have started to speak Sindarin or Quenya and it wouldn't even have surprised me, lol.

Dagan is typically my type of villain. Hot. Unhinged. Cool clothes. Wants to cleanse the galaxy with fire. 🥵🥵🥵

... and madly in love with a beautiful & heroic lady.

Basically everything I like. I feel so called out.

It's always falling for the villain guy with me.

But I can't help it - he's totally my type.

I mean, Cody Fern, the actor who he is modeled after (and who also voices him), is truly an Adonis of a man.

Especially in his role as Michael Langdon, which, I think, comes closest to how Dagan looks (because of the long hair, in particular), he is absolutely drop-dead gorgeous.

As Dagan he would be even prettier imho, if he were to actually portray him in a movie, given this character has an otherworldly, larger-than-life kind of beauty - the one that you also see with Tolkien's elves, for instance.

Just my two cents.

High Republic Era OTP - Dagan Gera & Santari Khri

I just love the way they look at each other.

Or the way he gazes at her with a soft smile (in the flashback scenes), while she is marvelling at the beauty of Tanalorr's landscape.

That he constantly showers her with praise, while at the same time being open about his own shortcomings, is quite something - especially considering he usually seems to be quite arrogant, and lacking humility in his interactions with others.

When they banter, he accepts her remarks without objection, even chuckles about it.

( It is also pointed out that he really couldn't care less about other peoples' opinions, and what anyone thinks of him - anyone but Santari. Her potentially having a bad opinion about him turns out to be his greatest fear. )

When he talks to her, or about her, his voice has a gentler tone than usual, and her name is spoken with such reverence - as one fanfic so beautifully put it: "as if it were a lover's caress".

Guys that genuinely adore their ladies are truly the best.

According to Darth Sidious, the bleeding of a kyber crystal is done by "infuse[ing] that crystal with [...] pain, anger, and hatred".

So I was just wondering about the scene where Dagan does this to his own and there was something that caught my attention:

While the crystal begins to bleed upon the memory of the Jedi order abandoning them, it certainly is him remembering being "betrayed by the one [he] trusted most" (i.e. Santari turning against him), that turns out to be the key component to the successful completion of this process.

It caused such a violent reaction that made the crystal explode in a crimson wave. Judging from that, the concerned emotions must have been quite intense.

And, kudos to Cody Fern, you could really feel the pain in his voice.

And also ...

At the beginning, when Cal releases Dagan from the stasis he was put in, and informs him about the fall of the Rebublic and the Jedi Order, his reaction turns from a blank, confused stare to bewilderment, and finally to that of complete distress.

At that point, the realization of the scope of what happened, the length of time that had passed, must have started to sink in - along with the fact that Santari must have passed on long ago.

He looks so desperate and defeated there - and, I don't know if it is just me, but even though he is dripping wet and there are rivulets of bacta dropping down from him everywhere - somehow I get the impression that there is also a streak of tears running down his cheek (from both of his eyes, at the same time), mingling with and perfectly disguised by the rest of the liquid.

His expression matches my assumption quite well, I think.

Anyway, it certainly can't be because of the Jedi, as there is little to no positive emotional connection to them left. He killed quite a number of them after all.

With Santari, however, things are entirely different.

The only logical explanation for his reaction, as well as the effectiveness of the bleeding of his crystal must be the strength and depth of his emotional connection to her, as she truly is at the heart of everything dear to him, and the focal point of everything that motivates him.

He might always ramble on about Tanalorr, but I think his obsession with the planet is rather a projection on his part, as in the end, everything always comes back to Santari.

Even his greatest fear is an entirely interpersonal matter, i.e. falling out of favour with her, rather than something concerning Tanalorr, or their project there.

There were some interesting comments on this matter on Reddit:

There were also some nice observations on here:

He moved almost like a predator stalking his prey, toying with them before striking with deadly grace. But he was only sparring, and with some creation of his own mind, a reflection of himself. He dodged and wove and struck, executing overhead swings, daring dashes and wielding the Force to separate his double-bladed saber to orbit his form. His reflection gave a savage upward stroke and managed to send the blade from his hand flying, and he leapt in the air to grab it, and in a fluid motion his saber crashed down on his foe's.

Unparalleled. Ferocious. Determined.

The words came unbidden as she let her gaze wander, to the sweat dotting his brow and trailed downward, melding his tunic to his broad chest. Every flex of his body showed the outline of his muscles, the definition of his shoulders, his arms, his abdomen. Silver-grey locks of hair clung to his brow, rendered a smoky tone from wetness. Yet he seemed unfazed by the exertion. He was energetic, proud.

Vibrant.

Somehow, beautiful seemed too tame a description for him.

The reflection paused, and waited before turning its glowing eyes on her. He senses me. Dagan furrowed his brow before stopping abruptly, straightening his stance. His gaze found hers as well, pale electric in the light of his yellow saber.

He appraised her. Then he gave a cocky smile, as he was wont to do, sheathing his saber with a mere thought.

"Santari." He spoke her name as if it were a lover's caress. She shivered underneath his adoring stare. "Working late again, hm?"

Survivors Chapter 2

Survivors: ~1270 words. After Cal faces Dagan Gera again, he can't sleep, so he goes to the rooftop of Pyloon's Saloon and has a heart-to-heart with Merrin.

Story Info: Cal Kestis/Merrin. Set during Jedi: Survivor. Canon Compliant, Alternating POVs, Missing Scenes. Romance, Fluff, Introspection, Mutual Pining.

Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3

Are Dagan and I really so different?

It was a thought that had haunted Cal ever since he’d seen that Force Echo on the Shattered Moon, especially now that Rayvis was dead, and by his hand.

Sighing, he rolled over and stared at the wall near his bunk. Sleep was not coming easily even though his body was exhausted from his ordeal on the Shattered Moon.

Dagan was obsessed with Tanalorr and went against Khri, even though he loved her. He threw everything they shared away because he wanted that compass, and she had no choice but to cut his arm off to stop him.

Cal was relieved that Merrin had told him his friends would intervene long before he ever got to that point. And yet…

How is what I’m doing to Merrin any different than what Dagan did to Khri?

You know, Santari and Dagan were also a really tragic pair that doesn‘t get enough attention IMO. They were pioneers together, they built a temple together and then everything came crashing down around them. Dagan couldn’t let go of Tanalorr and Santari couldn‘t let go of him. Yes, she stopped him, but she also saved his life and left him a path to Tanalorr in the hope that he‘d wake up and choose the light side again.
