a They Deserve Each Other shipping scale where on one end of the axis you have the “no one else is good enough for them” ships, and on the other end you have the ships that need to be together monogamously forever as a quarantine measure. whatever the fuck is wrong with both of them must be contained for the greater good.
Once upon a time…
I really wish the overused sentence “You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” was less relevant but here we are
I think one of the main reasons so many people on the left push back against the idea that they're antisemitic is that they're not intending to be and often their intention is something that, often, is good.
Like, they're antisemitic while posting about the suffering of Palestinians, they're antisemitic while talking about the (((rich powerful capitalists))) and their effect on the working class. I think a lot of them are unaware of that they're even being antisemitic in the first place so that adds another layer to their lack of intent.
But I thought we'd gotten to the point where it was understood that intent isn't everything. While, sure, someone intending to be prejudiced (in whatever way) is harmful, it can also be just as harmful when it's unintended. Not to mention the importance on educating yourself so you can be aware of and avoid unintended prejudices.
And I know a lot of people on the left aren't great at addressing their own prejudices and biases in areas unrelated to Jews. And I know from my own experience how hard it can be to look at those within yourself and actually own up to it and take accountability. But I just don't get why so many don't care or don't see what they're doing. I don't get why our pain doesn't matter at all.
A few of them absolutely know that they're intentionally causing harm, and straight up don't care. I got into an argument on Instagram about the "Jesus was Palestinian" narrative... they said the "intention" of the narrative to cast Jesus as Palestinian was to "get people to sympathise" with Gazans. I pointed out that the road to hell is paved with good intentions and that this was actively harming Jews by erasing our existence from the Levant.... and I basically got told that our feelings are irrelevant.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Oh for sure! Definitely not trying to say that there aren't those who are intentional with their antisemitism. I think more what I'm getting at is like... Okay. So those of you that aren't intending to be antisemitic, why don't you care when we point out that you still are? Why is it our feelings our irrelevant to you? I mean, shouldn't that alone be a sign that to you that something off? The fact that you don't care how a persecuted minority feels? That's just where I personally get stuck because I just cant fathom the complete lack of compassion.
I feel the exact same way. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I know there are some being intentionally antisemitic and are doing it with the full knowledge that they hate Jews—but for every one of those I’ve come across, I’ve also come across at least one who doesn’t believe they’re antisemitic or that they’re harming us. Because the truth is that they really don’t want to harm us—they just don’t want to do any deeper introspection as to whether their subconscious biases/bigotries may be affecting their overall opinions, because if they did they would have to change their overall opinions, or at least change their perception of themselves.
It’s so frustrating to deal with. And like, even though I can logically track why they’re acting this way, watching that lack of empathy and logical thinking unfold in real time is just… impossible to wrap my head around, especially when they keep insisting that they couldn’t possibly be antisemitic, while being blatantly antisemitic in the same breath.
The unforgiveable part for me is that these are the same people who keep touting and emphasizing that color-based racism is systemic and mostly unconscious, and that people who act like stereotypical racists are only a fraction of the whole system. So they have the knowledge and awareness of how these sorts of biases work, they just refuse to apply them to Jew-hate.
This is how prejudice works.
This is how prejudice works.
You don’t need to be sitting and thinking, l want to spread hurtful lies about Jews. The lies are so pervasive that you will spread them if you don’t make an effort not to.
And if someone says “that is antisemitic,” and you reply, I don’t care because ____, then it does not matter how good your reason is, you are deliberately spreading antisemitism.
“Magpie” is back on DK. Because most of my customers are waiting on their Froggy Rainbow Yarn Box, I don’t really have any other orders and should get to dye some new colourways today. Once I’ve done that, I’ll lower the minimum order value for overseas to £40 (two skeins).
