The more I see I do think any real leftist, anti white supremacist movement needs to really be anti fandom to a degree because fandom has created this awful culture where real life struggle becomes so abstract, it can be used to fuel fictitious fun. The way that capital commodifies radical discourses into consumable fragments is really one of its most frightening aspects. Anything is a product, and "fandom" functions as a cultural arm of capital- it's an offshoot of the commodity market which encourages individuals to identify themselves in their belongings. One of the biggest failures of identity politics is how thoroughly it was co-opted by capitalist market forces as "representation."

Herbert Marcuse talked about it in the 60s with regards to technological advancements: "[Capitalism's] productivity and efficiency, its capacity to increase and spread comforts, to turn waste into need, and destruction into construction, the extent to which this civilization transforms the object world into an extension of man’s mind and body makes the very notion of alienation questionable. The people recognize themselves in their commodities; they find their soul in their automobile, hi-fi set, split-level home, kitchen equipment. The very mechanism which ties the individual to his society has changed, and social control is anchored in the new needs which it has produced."

Now we talk about it in the context of online subcultures and like you're absolutely right- fandom has created this desert of the real online that everything is filtered through and made teenagers and young adults who have grown up in that culture extremely susceptible to propaganda and chipped away at their ability to understand what is or is not a game.
