Updated description moved here... because tumblr is tumblr. [I think the links are working now, but otherwise the major tags are there below for navigation.]

Notable fandoms are: the early seasons of Grimm, all of Revenge, The Killing, The X Files, the first two Mummy movies, Check Please!, Pride and Prejudice, Much Ado About Nothing, several incarnations of Sherlock Holmes, the Mission Impossible movies also might turn up repeatedly, and I also have a tag called i love this movie!. New-ish interests are might be The Magnus Archives and Dracula Daily... we'll see.

Other recurring themes are: art history, AUs, random parallels, unexpected references to Hungarybirds in every single form and terrible humor of the tumblr-kind.

As far as personal information goes, I’m Elizabeth, I’m 40, I’m Hungarian.

As far as personal interaction goes: I don’t follow back everyone, sorry; but I rarely unfollow (unless it was an accidental follow, I’m sorry about that too); however, it's not a problem if you unfollow me. I’m... askable I guess, I'm just terrible with answering them. Communication, especially, tumbr-specific communication is not my forte. In about 80% of cases, my likes should be attributed to your tags. Also: I'm guilty of overtagging. (My icon is still the amazing KT Tunstall in more than one ways.)

Roses are red, that much is true, but violets are purple, not fucking blue.

I have been waiting for this post all my life.

They are indeed purple, But one thing you’ve missed: The concept of “purple” Didn’t always exist.

Some cultures lack names For a color, you see. Hence good old Homer And his “wine-dark sea.”

A usage so quaint, A phrasing so old, For verses of romance Is sheer fucking gold.

So roses are red. Violets once were called blue. I’m hugely pedantic But what else is new?

My friend you’re not wrong About Homer’s wine-ey sea! Colours are a matter Of cultural contingency;

Words are in flux And meanings they drift But the word purple You’ve given short shrift.

The concept of purple, My friends, is old And refers to a pigment once precious as gold.

By crushing up molluscs From the wine-dark sea You make a dye: Imperial decree

Meant that in Rome, to wear purpura was a privilege reserved

For only the emperor!

The word ‘purple’, for clothes so fancy, Entered English By the ninth century

.

Why then are voilets Not purple in song? The dye from this mollusc, known for so long

Is almost magenta; More red than blue. The concept of purple is old, and yet new.

The dye is red, So this might be true: Roses are purple And violets are blue

.

While this song makes me merry, Tyrian purple dyes many a hue From magenta to berry And a true purple too.

But fun as it is to watch this poetic race The answer is staring you right in the face: Roses are red and violets are blue Because nothing fucking rhymes with purple.

Hirple - To limp or walk awkwardly

Cirple - An old Scots word for the hindquarters of a horse

“Roses are red, violets are purple,

My boner for you has caused me to hirple.”

My, how romantic!

DYING. I AM DYING.

while dana scully is undoubtedly my favorite part of the X-files, my second favorite part is how mulder is a ~celebrity~ in the alien-watching weirdo conspiracy theorist community

not only that but everyone within that community seems to know about dana scully “the skeptical partner” before they ever meet

which leads me to the conclusion that mulder is on fucking usenet or something, cluttering up threads on HAARP or the existence of the loch ness monster with how bouncy scully’s hair is today

or ‘‘omg guys my SKEPTIC PARTNER helped me apprehend a PYROKINETIC BRIT it was great she was beautiful her shoulderpads are so big”

(“oh no not this again” some poor cryptozoologist sighs from the other side of the screen)

New backformations unlocked!

  • To shrink a bit is to "lit" (from little)
  • To paint just a few little streaks on something is to "marb" it (from marble)
  • To have a rodent force you to cook just once is to "ratatouil" (from ratatouille)
  • To be in a polycule for a brief moment (but not continuously) is to "seatt" (from seattle)

Anonymous asked:

Do you have any cool bird facts

  • female raptors (eagles, hawks, falcons, etc) are larger than male raptors in pretty much all species. this happens even in groups not closely related to each other (ex: hawks and falcons), so its beneficial enough in their niche that its evolved independently a few times, though its unsure exactly what that benefit is atm (bc unlike males being larger in a lot of mammals, female raptors dont make a habit of fighting each other or using size to attract mates as far as we know). ex: heres a male and female Cooper's Hawk

  • somewhat mentioned above but falcons are more closely related to parrots than they are to hawks
  • Gray Catbirds and American Robins have been witnessed raising young in the same nest at the same time. In one instance (reported by Mulvihill and Murray), they were recorded caring for the young of both species in the nest, and when the Catbird young fledged, the adult Catbirds continued to provide food for the not-yet-fledged Robins. heres a pic of the nest from the report

  • the worlds oldest known bird as of 2024 is a wild Laysan Albatross named Wisdom who's 72-73 years old (at minimum, we dont actually know her birth date, just that she was at least 5 years old when she was banded in the 50s) and still raising chicks. here's her with one of her chicks

  • also Albatrosses have wingspans of up to 3.5m/11.5ft and have been recorded flying 49,700 miles without touching land (they do land in the water to eat tho)
  • this is from personal experience but if you walk around in a north american grassland for long enough, you Will get jumpscared by a Mourning Dove bc they make their nests on the ground in the grass and like to hang out on the ground in the grass and they also like to wait until youre right overtop of them to freak out and fly away from you
  • Bald Eagles don't get their fully white heads and tails until theyre about 5 years old

  • A lot of birds have been observed incorporating cigarette butts into their nests, and a study in Mexico on House Finches found that this actually results in drastic decreases in parasites affecting young compared to nests without them
  • Cedar Waxwings (and Waxwings in general) just look so smooth. they look like someone airbrushed them. look at this shit

  • in Jacanas, females lay eggs in multiple males' nests, and then the males raise the young by themself. Also they carry their babies under their wings like this

  • Horned Guan. Theyre endangered and live in a small area of central america. both the males and females have the little horn fez, the males just have taller ones

Lucy Lawless Vs. Claudia Black

Propaganda

Lucy Lawless - (Xena: Warrior Princess) - Lucy Lawless as Xena walks, runs, fights, kicks, rides, etc. with 100% confidence at all times and it’s amazing to see every time. The show, since it aired in the 90s, was limited in how explicit they could make the Xena/Gabrielle relationship, and by limited, I mean they used every piece of subtext available to show how in love those two women were and still get the show on the air.

Claudia Black - (Farscape, Stargate SG-1) - Oh man, Farscape is a great show and a great example of the Henson Workshop, but also Claudia Black as Aeryn Sun is such a great part of this ensemble cast. I love her character arc and also she's really hot.

No additional propaganda

A Goose Family Feathursday

Mildred and Horace Start a Family!!

Every spring for the past few years a mating pair of Canada Geese take up residence on the green roof outside our window for a couple of weeks. We've named them Horace and Mildred, and we did a post about them in 2021. We wondered if they would ever establish a nest in the roof's sedum, but they just hang out for a few weeks and then depart. This year they finally decided that our roof was suitable to start a family and about 20 days ago Mildred set up housekeeping with a downy nest and six eggs near one of the vents on the roof. We are all very excited here in Special Collections, and we maintain daily goose alerts!

Mildred will incubate her brood for about 30 days, rarely leaving the nest. She is a very devoted mother. Horace on the other hand is usually gone during the day, so we rarely see him. Canada Geese are monogamous and mate for life, so we don't think he's cheating on Mildred, but we all thought he would be more present as the male usually hangs about to help guard the nest, but apparently he has other ideas.

We should see some hatchlings in about ten days or so, and we'll bring you an update then. While we are interested in seeing the couple nest on our roof, we also have concerns. There is no water, and the goslings will be susceptible to falling off the roof and becoming prey to raptors and other avian predators, especially the peregrine falcons that raise their own families on the nearby rooves of our campus's tallest buildings. Nature will have its way, but we do hope that Mildred and Horace have strategies for keeping their family safe.

Stay tuned!
