reading your response to the ousai/saiou ask made me realise, I don't actually know if with the ship name order people mean the one who tops or the one who doms or takes charge in general?? i'm curious what you're thinking of with ousai (and do you maybe know how other people approach this topic?) thank you!!

i feel like i've been talking too much lately so i'll just, put this under a cut to explain more,

is there any reason you prefer 🏁🔎 over 🔎🏁?

answer: ouma spends a not insignificant amount of effort throwing himself at saihara in canon (to varying degrees of un/success) so i just like to live in a world where he enjoys the fruits of his labors

more serious answer: his dialogues in main story + FTE + love suite are a constant series of challenges & invitations to saihara, even if saihara doesn't always pick up on or accept them. given that plus saihara's passive nature/general preference to follow versus lead, i think it's easy to see ouma as an initiator in the relationship, as obfuscated and overly engineered as his methods are... intention matters quite a bit to ouma, whose whole thing is parsing meaning from uncertainty. so in more benign situations where there's space to build trust and verify interest (salmon mode) he goes all in, and backs off when he can't (love hotel).

even less serious answer: it's cute when the top is the short one

You're very obviously into Genshin (and your art for it is absolutely gorgeous), but have you ever tried Mihoyo's Star Rail? One of the more recent main story characters is very Kokichicore, and feels like one you'd really like.

okay. so. here's the story. it is, that i played hsr on release at the pace of a lunatic, and i got to tb 65 in like a week and a half, BUT i swore a blood oath to be f2p in THIS hyv game so i tried REALLY REALLY hard to get blade on his first banner without opening wallet. naturally, i failed! so i quit bc i didnt have the energy to grind two hyv games at once

and now a year later my friends are trying to lure me back in with aventurine. unfortunately, it's working because i have a critical weakness for smiling knifecats with a death gambit. so. ive been scrabbling in the dirt for free jades with my wretchedly out dated builds. i just met firefly and the Thing That Calls Itself Sampo (i think). why are aventurine's eyes so beguiling? these soda dogs are kinda beating my ass. i have 50 pulls saved and a dream. i'll keep u posted on how it goes 😔

i love the fact that your oumasai actually has a dynamic and isn't unhealthy if that makes sense >< usually oumasai is depicted as kokichi using shuichi and shuichi is like helpless... that's always just been off putting

i don't know that i'd call all of mine "healthy" either (or at least, not every version of ousai i draw), but it is important to me that it's not a one-sided relationship... in-game ouma is always thinking ten steps ahead of most people, saihara included at times, but their relationship is interesting because they keep each other on their toes!! i guess it can be easy to forget that as much as ouma is a mystery to saihara, saihara often is to him, too.

i like all kinds of saiou/ousai dynamics, but whether it's easy-going or adversarial, the thread that makes it work is the mutual caution followed by curiosity... and every step of the dance after that :)c

its really funny that i got dragged into daiya by fanfic a month ago and i just found out you used to do fanart.. its really fun to find coincidences like that :]

isn't it great when u find out artists/writers/etc you follow also made stuff for your new interests? like digging in ur bag and finding a surprise candy bar ehe

haven't caught up in a hot minute on daiya manga, but it's still near and dear to my heart :)c it's the first series i ran a zine for, and the longest fic i managed to finish is also daiya. i hope seidou wins the koshien in the hypothetical manga epilogue that may or may not ever exist

i noticed that you mentioned that you were watching the apocathary diaries in a previous ask, what are your thoughts on it?

it's great!! maomao is a very fun protagonist. it's refreshing to have a lead character who's guided first and foremost by her calm intellect and pragmatism, which really heightens the moments when she's petty, or kind, or vengeful.

i've only watched the anime so idk if they're gonna pick up this thread later but i'm most interested in how immediately obsessed she is with suirei after being outfoxed by her :)c so i hope suirei rolls up again someday. the knife's edge of intellect is curiosity, ya gotta see where it gets applied...!!

hello! I was wondering, what your pen settings for the circo pen are if you don't mind sharing??

80% opacity and usually 25px brush size, tho that changes a lot if it's for drawing or coloring o:

Hello there! I hope you're having a fantastic day and that you're happy!

I don't know if this question has been asked before and I'm sorry if has been but I wanted to know how you break down your anatomy! The way you draw people in your drawing is always so fluid and especially the way you're able keep the heights accurate for different shots.

Thank you for taking the time to read this!!!

Avatar

i talked a little about anatomy before, so i'll answer your question about scaling heights in different poses today o:

when there's a height difference, check the length and width of each person's body parts. for example, saihara is a fair bit taller ouma, so whenever i draw them together i try to check/correct arm, leg and torso length, since they otherwise both have slender builds. if you pay attention to the relative dimensions, you can convey scale even when characters aren't just standing next to each other. i stuck saiou in a box today to demonstrate 🎵

try drawing the whole body for each person, including the parts that are hidden in the final shot. if you draw the whole body, it's easier to check the dimensions of the figures and make sure they're consistent to scale.

this doesn't work for all cases, but i think it's a useful habit to consider how characters occupy 3d space. if you only draw overlapping parts without thinking how they fit together, an image can look flat and won't convey depth.

  • if you draw characters in an environment, make sure to check the scale against objects in the background too
  • this height comparison tool might help to visualize sizes

try sticking your faves in a box too, it's a fun exercise in anatomy and composition :)c hope that helps!

i really love your lineart!!!!!!

sometimes in the inking stage i kind of mess up about the thickness about the lines and such. and in general it looks stiff in comparison to the sketch. any advice for a novice?

Avatar

thanks!! wow it's been two years since someone asked me about lineart :') in addition to the stuff i wrote in that post, some ways my process has changed since then:

  1. using a pen at lowered opacity w/ velocity variation:

(example used is ciro pen!) if you draw a fast stroke it thins out, but consistent speed/pressure gives you a uniform width. it took me awhile to get used to bc developing speed + control just takes practice, but i like how pens with velocity make it quick to vary line width easily. (it might be a placebo effect but i also feel like drawing with these types of pens forces you to have more line confidence, bc it's very visually apparent when you go slow or unsteady...haha)

2. sketch vague, draw detail in later

for pictures that i draw separate lineart for, i usually do rough bodies/shapes and then draw in details while inking. if there's too much detail in the sketch, i think it's easy to focus too much on following the sketch perfectly with your lines, so it gets really stiff and loses the motion in the original sketch. example sketch -> lineart

3. the "this is fine" or "eh fix it later"

try not to overwork it! its fine if there are holes... and the lines dont connect... and the width is weird... it is okay.... employ the time honored techniques of "it's fine" it or "ill just fix it later" lol i tweak or add details as part of coloring to correct places where the lineart got weird. you can probably see it better in this process vid i posted before, but i also drew an example today ft. my boy gaming

like any other skill, i think developing skill + speed with lines follows with time and practice, but i totally empathize with the struggle against it looking too stiff... getting past the mental block of trying Too Hard and losing the charm is tough. you can do it!! i hope this helps!

Heeyy!! Sorry to be a bother, I just wanted to remind you to turn off third-party sharing in settings if you don’t want tumblr to use your posts for AI training! If you don’t mind that sort of thing, please feel free to ignore this message.

Also your saiouma fanart saved my life k thx bye😊😊

i did do that already, but thank you for the reminder!! this can be a PSA for everyone else, too--you need to OPT-OUT of third-party sharing in your blog settings on every single blog. please check your settings accordingly.

naturally, this also implies that you can create a separate blog in which you opt-IN for third-party scraping but only post the most useless nonsensical gibberish possible and hopefully poison the well. become ungovernable

(p.s. ty i'm glad you're enjoying it!!)
