I Love Fish More Than I Love Myself

@bettas-are-awesome-blog

This isn't just going to be a fish blog despite the name but it is going to feature my fish the most. This is going to be a LONG description. Lets get started. Redrum (Red) is my 2ish year old betta fish. I got him November 2014. He is currently housed in a 5g with 2 zebra snails and a yellow mystery snail. Charles is another betta fish that I got December 3rd, 2016. He is housed in a 5 gallon, alone. He had ghost shrimp and the yellow mystery snail with him but after bullying the snail and murdering the shrimp he is going to be forever alone. Paradise is my only girl betta fish. I got her January 18th, 2017. She is housed alone in a 10 gallon. She is so wonderful I love her so much. Captain is my final betta fish who I got February 3rd, 2017. He is my rescue betta. Found at Petco by my dorm, half dead, and with only one eye. He was a dull mustard brown with a light brown on his back. He also wasn't using his tail fin to swim. Recently He is gaining weight, using his tail fin, and gaining color. I still can't Believe he is alive. Other animals who may show up on here: A Pair of Gerbils, A Pair of Guinea Pigs, A Lab Mix named Snoopy, a Golden Retriever named Prince, and Two Cats Named Smokey and Coal. Pictures of them all can be found by searching the tags for their names or the my pets tag.

No your cat cannot be fed a vegan diet.

This is a biological fact not an opinion. Not an agenda or bias. It is pure scientific fact. You cannot feed your carnivorous pets a vegetarian or vegan diet.  Especially cats. Cats are obligate carnivores which means that they live on a solely meat based diet that is biologically essential for their survival.

Not only does the meat contain enzymes, amino acids, nutrients and other essential minerals, cats can’t utilize plant-based proteins at all. Cats require high levels of amino acids like taurine and arginine that plants do not provide and require vitamin D (D3) that is only found in meat. So while eating a vegetarian / vegan based diet might “fill” their stomachs they cannot get any nutrients from it as they are unable to break down plant matter.

This is because of a number of reasons. Firstly plant matter if hard to digest and herbivores require special biological systems to be able to live on a plant-only diet. Such as an enzyme called cellulose that that breaks down the cell wall of plant matter and bacteria that live in their gut, that herbivores cannot do themselves. Cats instead have an enzyme called amylase that can be used to break down small amounts of plant matter. But it is only produced in small amounts and therefore cannot handle high levels of plant matter.

There is also the fact their digestive tracts are vastly different from that of herbivores.

As you can see, carnivores have a rather short digestive tract. This because the nutrients and energy in meat is easier to absorb then an animal eating a herbivorous diet.

Herbivores therefore have long digestive tracts in order to lengthen the time the plant matter is in their body and therefore have a chance to absorb more of the energy. In fact ruminant herbivores have a hour chamber stomach and ruminant (regurgitate) their food in order to better break down the plant matter and absorb more of the nutrients.

The dental structure of a carnivore such as a cat and a herbivore is also vastly different as they are adapted for their different diets. Cats have teeth (incisors and canine) that are used for tearing flesh and holding onto prey. They have only one set of molars as shown and three sets of pre-molars. These teeth are used for grinding / chewing. Compared to that of a herbivore, it’s hardly enough to break down and chew a plant based diet.

A herbivore’s dental structure (horse) contain of mostly molars rather then teeth used for tearing / holding onto prey. As shown below, a horse has many sets of large molars and a large mandible. That allows for long periods of chewing and grinding down on tough plant-matter / grains ect.

Your cat cannot live on a meatless diet  Any good vet will tell you this and if they don’t they are either not properly qualified or pushing an agenda. If you are uncomfortable with feeding meat to a cat or dog or any other carnivorous pet. Then don’t get that pet. Get an animal that lives on grains or plant matter because you should not own a cat if you’d rather put your own agenda / “morals” over that of an animals life and well being.

Guinea pigs!! The cream and greyish brown is Opal and the tri colored one is Sapphire. They are in a XL cage. Its on amazon but I can't remember whats its called. Its 2x4ft. They are kept on fleece and fed oxbow pellets and oxbow hay with fresh veggies everyday. I don't currently have a picture of their full updated cage but when I get home (Wednesday) I will add one!

My gerbils! Bin part is 29 gallons and the too part is meant to fit over a 10 gallon tank. Brown gerbil is named Karliah and the yellow one is Aela. Got them from Petco in summer of 2015! The blue dish is food (oxbow pellets hamster/gerbil food) and the pink one is the sand bath. They get the occasional seed as a treat. No more than 1-2 a day. Aela is a bit pudgy so she doesn't get as many. I did do a lot of research on them but if anyone sees anything that is worrying please tell me! My goal is to give them the best life!

Hey Petblr!

I’m creating an unproblamatic petblr masterpost! The masterpost is for blogs who mostly post pet content, and are generally supportive people who promote good animal husbandry. All I’m asking to qualify is that you use good animal husbandry (nothing like small cages, shock or prong collars, hitting to train a dog, fish in bowls, etc etc), and that you support lgbt+ communities (You don’t have to blog about it, but if you think lgbt+ is wrong or somehow immoral please do not comment). I’m also asking that no animal rights activists comment on this as that’s not really helping animals, thanks.

If you’d like to be added, please reblog and add what animals you have, and what blog to put you down as. You can also message me this information. I’ll add you to the masterpost! The masterpost will be up by tonight and will be updated constantly from then on. On the other hand if I add you by accident and you’d like to be removed, or if you’d like to be removed at any time, let me know and I’ll do that! (Please note: This pet can be anything. Snake, dog, cat, rodent, bug, crustacean, insect, reptile; anything.) (Note: @petcareawareness inspired me to make this, so check out their blog which also has animal care related things on it.)

Very new but I have 2 guinea pigs, 2 gerbils, and 4 betta fish mainly but will be posting my 2 dogs and 2 cats sometimes as well. Put me down as this blog please!

Drop the comments below ⬇ (at The Shrimp Farm)

Me talking about my fish at work: “Yeah I have 4 betta tanks with heaters and filters and -”

My coworker: “Oh, they don’t need all of that; I have a betta that lives in a little bowl!”

My other coworker thinking about getting one for his daughter: Oh yeah, that sounds perfect!
