And I Have Touched the Sky

@hollowistheworld / hollowistheworld.tumblr.com

My name is Rachel (she/her), and I get very emotional about things very quickly. I am a multi-fandom mess and I'm really bad about tagging, but if you need something tagged let me know and I'll do my best to remember. I write a lot, and I'm willing to take requests, though I make no promises that I'll respond in a reasonable amount of time, or at all. If you want a guarantee of a response, length, or anything else, I take fic commissions. No sex scenes though; I'm too ace to pull them off. I've tried. It's not pretty. Icon Credit

I love Star Trek, I love how every time a federation ship goes into the romulan neutral zone there is also immediately a romulan ship. Like girl, what were YOU doing in the neutral zone?

Being a history nerd makes reading dystopias or crime novels kind of sad tbh. The author is like 'these people are awful!! Sometimes... they... KILL people!!!' And I'm like 'hmm. I've been on a deep dive into the shit that went on in Chile in the 70s and 80s, do you need like... some ideas?'

nasa: we're going to shoot three rockets directly at the sun during the total eclipse. for study and research purposes.

me: oh cool

nasa: we have named the rockets apep. this stands for atmospheric perturbations [in the] eclipse path.

me: oh cool

nasa: apep is also the ancient egyptian deity of chaos and darkness, who ceaselessly seeks to extinguish the sun. we launch these rockets directly at the sun in the name of apep.

me: oh... cool?

...he is weaving the chocolate. Do you copy, this bitch is WEAVING CHOCOLATE

We are so damn lucky Chocolate Guy has a passion for chocolate and crafting beautiful, lifelike desserts.... because if he chose to put this level of work, dedication, and sheer determination into anything even slightly nefarious (instead of nearly breaking the laws of physics in order to create culinary masterpieces) we would be so epically fucked.

idk, maybe it's because I refuse to accept the allos as the default, but I don't like it when characters who wouldn't make sense being romantically involved with someone are touted as being aroace rep. "This book about robots is full of ace rep!" It's full of robots, is what it's full of. "This character who doesn't view other people as people is asexual!" Okay, are they ace, or do you think ace people are inherently sociopathic. "The Martian is a great book if you're looking for books with no romance!" The Martian has a cast of one, unless we're getting really fucking trippy, of course there's not going to be romance.

Like, it's not like I disagree. I do think most robots should be aroace, the character who thinks they're superior to all other humans probably identifies somewhere on the ace spectrum, and there is no romance in The Martian. But they don't feel like representation to me. They feel othering. Like all allo options have been exhausted, so here, you can read about robots and sociopaths! Oh you wanted books about people like you? Who have physical bodies and friends and interact with others, they just don't make out with people (or think about making out with people) all the time? And you want the lack of romance to be a footnote, not the plot? You don't want the ace characters to spend most of the book thinking about how broken and lonely they are? You'd like a lack of romance without the characters even necessarily needing to say they're ace? Yeah, we don't have any of those. The fucks wrong with you

I can't quite convey how shocking it is to see a mainstream British newspaper publish an article like this. quoting Karl Marx and essentially calling for a rebellion against landlords - this is one of the most radical things I've ever seen a British newspaper publish, and this is a newspaper sold in shops. you'd expect this in an obscure news outlet that nobody really knows about, not the guardian. they snapped. this is beautiful.

some choice quotes..

"Our recent history shows us that landlord abolition, while maintaining adequate levels of housing stock, is an entirely realistic ambition"

"We simply need to relearn the wisdom of the last century: to acknowledge that landlordism is the enemy of affordability"

"We are so beholden to landlords crying wolf that parliament has spent five years failing to do the one thing that, in 2019, every political party agreed needed to be done."

"If we want a Viennese-style existence we can only achieve this, as we did 50 years ago, by driving the landlords out. Which is only fair: we have given them a very good innings."

I really think people have forgotten just how bad things were under the Trump Administration. Literally every day there was news about some service being cut or someone terrible appointed somewhere they shouldn't be or what have you. He constantly flirted with WW3 and military dictatorship. It was such a blur of badness that there aren't big standouts for people to point to to make him "the XYZ president." it was everything. all the time. Why do we not remember this.

Remember how everyone learned Zelenskyys name? he wasn't the presiden of Ukraine standing up against a longshot defense against a Russian invasion. He was that guy that Trump tried to extort in order to get blackmail against Joe Biden.

Can anyone name the current secretary of education? I can't. But I can list the shitty things Betsy DeVos did
