I've seen posts going around claiming that petting animals is basically tricking them into thinking they're being groomed, and it's bugging me because, like, there's no trickery afoot. Petting and scritching are grooming activities. They help to dislodge loose fur and foreign objects and more evenly distribute protective oils, among other things. Primates are social groomers, and the human impulse to scritch is the legacy of our primate ancestors. We see an animal we like, even a dangerous one, and the monkey brain says "groom that thing".

my latest cartoon for New Scientist.

something interesting about writing this show is that it's made me think more deeply about the objects i keep around me. i like that it's a human thing to pick up stuff we like and keep it around, whether it's a nice pebble, an empty wine bottle, an art print, a preserved moth.

there's something lovely to me about this as a process. now i've noticed myself doing it i try to appreciate those moments and sit with them when they happen. what is it about this pebble that compels me to hold onto it like this? why do i want to keep this postcard? what is this tiny ornament adding to my life?

the aim of this thoughtfulness isn't to disregard the action, to decide not to keep the pebble or buy the tiny ornament, but instead to recognise joy when i find it in these things. it's really nice.

there's a gloomier side of this, too; objects we hold onto because we think we should. little things that are like talismans of bad times. objects that even once we throw them out, bury, or burn them, a little part of our brain keeps holding onto them, and we can remember the distinct weight of the thing on our palms, that particular scuffed edge, the strange bubbles in the old paint.

objects are sensory in so many ways; it makes so much sense they would be tied to emotion and memory the way seem to be for me.

I love episode 38 so much I'm so convinced you're all also going to love it. Episode 39 has some stupid jokes and some of the Most Moments in the season up to this point. but then 40, the finale episode of the season, is like. MASSIVE. it's bombastic. it's ridiculous. it is drenched in blood. it'll hurt you. the last couple of minutes are massive and indulgent and absurd and i wrote them CACKLING to myself with delight.

Also, fuck every single one of you who has anything to say about my galaxy leggings. My passport photo for the next 10 years was me wearing a necklace made of multi-coloured paperclips, with a sidecut I gave myself with kitchen scissors. I used to wear a mismatched pair of knockoff Doc Martens, one bright yellow and one lime green, with the laces replaced by purple hair ribbons and green gardening twine. I would layer 4 or 5 pairs of different coloured fishnet tights until my legs were like a 3D optical illusion, and wore a coral coloured blazer with shoulder pads that was 4 sizes too large.

I feel I should specify when I talk about the vast majority of Israelis supporting this genocide it's not to call for violence of them or even to demonise them. It's to call attention to Israel having a genocidal education system which dehumanises Palestinians from the moment Israelis start school. Ilan Pappé did a study in 1994 of the Israeli education system and raised the alarm that it would raise a generation who are even worse than those who first colonised Palestine in 1948. We're seeing the truth of that now.

I raise this point because we're seeing this attempt by politicians and the media to claim that it's just Netanyahu who is to blame for this genocide and not a systematic problem that requires boycotting, divestments and sanctions to push them to correct. This lie is being pushed because they do not want to change the status quo which allows for Israel to steal Palestinian land and homes and keep Palestinians under military occupation.

this can happen with glass buttplugs too btw like, genuinely be careful with how light reflects off of things.

probably i just said it but i want to say it again:

- don’t apologise if you don’t know english.

- yes, english is the most common language on the internet but you are not forced to know it perfectly.

- your own language is beautiful.

- non-english people make a huge effort to write in English everyday on this website.

- support non-english people and don’t make them feel bad if they do not know English. 

- actually support all the languages.

- spread more language diversity on Tumblr.
