I'm Emperor Yang, the ruler of the Red Kingdom. Red is a beautiful color, is it not? After all, it represents our strength, power, determination- as well as love. Feel free to ask anything you like.

“Greetings, and good day/night to you. I am called Error, and essentially the person to call when you need data information from anything technological. Sometimes, the things you guys search up on Google are the most unbelievable- Before I get too sidetracked from my goals, care to ask a question or two?”

Hey, are you okay? Do you need my red panda to comfort you?

“Please, come in, and- don’t mind the mess. If I had known you were coming to visit, I would’ve tidied up.”

He laughed just a bit, replying, “And you’re the reason the world is less terrifying than it should be.” He gazed at her eye bags, then telling her, “You should sleep; and afterwards get a decent meal and a bath.”

“Oh, so now you’re telling me I stink?” She said, fake offense lacing her voice. But the mention of sleep made her yawn in response, covering her mouth with her hand. “You’re right, though, I definitely need one.”

Mathilde took a moment to think over the proposition, tilting her head from side to side with a hum. “I’ll only sleep if you sleep with me. You need rest just as much as I do.” She puffed her cheeks out. “And I want to cook you something afterwards. Please?” Obviously by cook she meant have someone else cook for him, but it’s the thought that counts.

He sighed, although happy with the arrangement. “Alright, Mathilde, alright- just attempt to not squish me while we’re sleeping,” he joked. “And I assume that I’ll be having dreams of food since you’re cooking afterwards.”

“Are you sure? I could have done all these things, but I did nothing until a week has past and all I had to offer was a bouquet of tulips and Bǎo along with me. And yet, I was sulking about what happened after the Ball while upholding the Red Kingdom, completely ignorant of the pain you felt. I feel horrible knowing that I couldn’t even protect you physically this whole entire time,” he continued to ramble on, gripping his own hair.

“Are you serious?” She asked as she gripped Án tighter, fingers digging into the material of his shirt. Her shoulders were shaking both from laughter, and the oncoming waterworks. “Án, you’re taking care of your kingdom all by yourself, trying to keep your people happy, all while battling your own problems, and you’re fretting over me? I can’t fucking believe you right now.”

Her words would’ve sounded more harsh if not for the hiccup that followed them. Instead it just sounded pathetic, like she was trying to be angry but was failing miserably. “You’re a dick, you know. Making me cry like this. You’re too selfless, you’re too nice, I really don’t deserve you.” She reached a hand up to wipe her face, before returning it to Án’s back. “I’m convinced we were supposed to be soulmates, but the Gods made a mistake. Why else would they have given me such an amazing best friend?”

He moved up his head to make eye contact with her, noticing that she too was crying. He moved his hand to wipe the stream of tears that followed after the last time she wiped them, to which he then patted her head gently while smoothing out her greased hair. He shook off the last comment, mostly out of paranoia if Mathilde actually k n e w or not, and if so she could have stated such in the beginning than now.

Án moved her bangs to the side, which transitioned to him caressing her cheek. “Well I suppose I have to apologize for not being your soulmate who cares a tremendously awful lot about you.

Mathilde leaned into the touch, sniffling, and reaching up to cup her hand over his in a gentle movement. She entwined their fingers as best as she could, a smile making its way onto her face. “I appreciate it, a tremendously awful lot.” She spoke, throwing the phrase back at him. “We’re a couple of messes, aren’t we? Look at us; greasy hair, eye bags, tear tracks- We were meant to be friends.”

She used her free hand to pat Án’s back, one more reassuring touch before she relinquished her grip on his shirt. “You’re better than a soulmate, you’re like the missing piece to my puzzle. But you’re a good piece, not one of those shitty sky pieces that there are always too many of.”

He laughed just a bit, replying, “And you’re the reason the world is less terrifying than it should be.” He gazed at her eye bags, then telling her, “You should sleep; and afterwards get a decent meal and a bath.”

He smiled gently, which then led to a pause for a moment before realizing tears were dripping down his face. He rushed to wipe it off, which proved to be ineffective because more tears fell from the last. “Sorry, seems like it’s not stopping anytime soon,” he joked, giving a small chuckle.

“Oh, Án..” She said sympathetically, lifting her head up again to properly look down at the smaller male. She moved the hand from his knee, opting instead to put it on his shoulder and squeeze lightly. “It’s okay, let it all out. You’ve had a lot going on lately, haven’t you?”

He continued to wipe the flooding tears with the sleeves of his shirt, then realizing it was inevitable and gave up. “My apologies, I should have been here sooner. I should have checked in sooner to listen to your problems. I should have been able to protect you from anything horrible that night. Most of all, I should have been able to be here faster when you needed me the most. You are my closest friend, and you didn’t deserve anything that happened to you at the ball. I should have protected you from the very start.”

Mathilde didn’t know how to react, she just stared at the other with her mouth open, desperately trying to find something to say to console him. When that didn’t work, she resorted to gently pulling Án into her chest, and wrapping her arms around him in a protective grip.

She sat like this, letting him ramble while pressing her face into his messy hair. Maybe it was because he was crying, maybe because she also hadn’t slept in a week, but tears of her own were pooling in her eyes, threatening to spill.

“Án, please stop. Please. You didn’t do anything wrong, you’re blaming yourself for nothing.” She half-whispered, not wanting to raise her voice in fear it’d crack. “Listening to you say all of this hurts me, because, you’ve always protected me. Even when you weren’t here physically, I could feel your energy with me, every time I needed you.”
