There’s a fic on fanfiction(.)net that I’ve kept tabs on for years to see if it’s been updated or not. While I’m no longer even in the fandom it’s written for, it just has one of the greatest storylines I’ve ever read. Last time it was updated was 2011.

The other day, I decided to reread the entire thing and leave a very in-depth review of what I thought of each chapter. I also mentioned how I started reading it when I was 13 and am now 21, but always came back to see if it was ever finished because I loved it so dearly.

Today, said author sent me a private message saying that her analytics showed that the story was still getting views even after all these years, but no one ever bothered to leave reviews other than “update soon!!!”, so she never felt motivated enough to finish it. She said that me reviewing every single chapter with lengthy paragraphs made her cry and meant the world to her. She also mentioned that she felt encouraged to write the two remaining chapters needed to complete the story and that she would send me a message the night before she updates the fic.

I’m literally sobbing. I’m so excited :’)

Please always remember to leave a review when reading fanfiction!!! It means a lot to a writer.

Seriously, this is what keeps us going; YOUR COMMENTS.

And you think my ranting about it is just being salty! It’s not! Reviews can mean the difference between feeling motivated and feeling out of place.

If you ever feel like you don't contribute to fandom because you "only" comment—

A regular serial commenter just joined a fandom Discord server I'm on and people are coming out of the woodwork to thank her for her service to the fandom, expressing how much joy her comments on their works bring them.

Remember—they're never only comments.

If you're a reader who gets nervous about leaving comments, please take a moment to read the notes on this post. The tags alone have been giving me life for the past week, and it's honestly lovely.

People who "only" comment are so so important. I recognise the usernames of people who regularly comment on my fics and I love them all. In fact I love anyone who leaves an uplifting comment on my work, whether it's once or repeatedly. Interaction is so important, it's really nice to feel like you're connecting with people via what you create, even if just for a brief moment.

someone I follow on the bird app just announced they're starting a very exclusive private fic server because they and a bunch of other people want to talk about how much they love the fics they're reading, and as an author can I just say that a really great place to talk about a fic you love is in the comments for that fic

I understand that people are trying to create safe spaces, but as the number of comments that I get on my fics dwindles with each passing year, knowing these spaces exist where my fics are being discussed, places that I am excluded from, makes me want to write fic LESS

I mean I guess who cares, right, because if I stop writing, there's 10,000 other people that will continue...but if you participate in a fic "book club" server and you say nice things there about a fic you loved, maybe copy and paste that into a comment on AO3?

the only thing fanfic writers are asking for in return for hours of hard work is attention. please don't rob us of the one thing that we hope for when we hit "post"

At this point I might personally pay people to *just share some words with me* on a fic. I mean I won't, but boy…reading 20,000 words for a very specific thing you love and not even contemplating sharing a thank you in the form of those actual words in a comment?

WHY?

Roswell, New Mexico may be over, but fandoms are forever. You can now play RNM Bingo any time of the year, at your own pace!

How To Keep Playing Comment Bingo in 3 Easy Steps

  1. Choose a bingo card: Your format options are Google Doc or PNG. Within those, you have 3 layout options that all have the same squares, just arranged differently (and each of those have three cute backgrounds, so pick your favorite!) (“there has to be three,” as Max says).
  2. Fill out your card: use your bingo card to track what RNM works you’ve read and commented on, including author and title. As you go, keep a list of the links to share as a rec post on Tumblr.
  3. Post or submit on Tumblr: Use the tag #rnmbingo and mention @rnmbingo on your own Tumblr, or Submit a bingo card to us directly. Instant and cute Fic Rec board!

ao3 comments will be like “i like this line of your fic” and my reply will be like “fantastic thank you here’s my entire thought process about how i ended up with that particular line and also an outline for another fic i have and fifteen resources i used to research 1980s politics” and nobody asked for that chill

i asked for that

No we 100% asked for that.

Definitely asked for that, and also here’s the other three dozen lines from your fic that I liked and the outline for the fic they inspired me to write plus some extra character meta that at this point is only tangentially related to your fic but was definitely inspired by those 1980s politics resources and -

Listen…

Fic Commenters: If you ever want to make a comment going on depth about a part of a fic that stood out to you, but think “does the author really want to read all this?” The answer is YES! YES WE DO WANT TO READ ALL THAT!!!!

Fic authors: If you ever see a comment that makes you want to explain your thought process behind your writing, and you think “does the commenter really want to read all this?” The answer is YES! YES WE DO WANT TO READ ALL THAT!!!

No one reblogs on tumblr anymore.

No one leaves comments on Ao3 anymore.

Seriously people the lack of fandom interaction these days makes me genuinely depressed, it never used to be like this, makes me wonder what's the point of coming online to do anything anymore.

Reblog a post so other people can see it.

Leave a comment so the author doesn't feel like giving up.

Fandom cannot live on Likes or Kudos alone.

No it makes everything feel more alive once you leave a comment and even a reblog. It seems more like a rarity than a simple function that was given to us when someone reblogs and comments now. You keep Fandom alive and keep the author inspired when you leave comments and interact under posts. I'm glad this was said. I used to turn my comments off bc of how many I got!!! Please don't be afraid to speak

Speaking of AO3 authors wanting more comments and/or perception biases (I assume, since these are a perennial discussion, that someone spoke of one of them recently XD), I was reading a new WIP fic for an ongoing tv show and the author was talking in their author's note about how much engagement had gone down in the fandom for season 2 compared to season 1. By the time I got caught up in the story and left a comment, I noticed they had dozens of comments per chapter, way more than any of the season 1 fics I'd read, and I was like, huh.

Then I clicked into their profile and saw their season 1 fic had *tens of thousands* of kudos and multiple thousands of comments, and all made sense. They stumbled into BNFdom or at least virality and thought that was more or less the default state.

They're going to be chasing that high forever, poor thing; those numbers come about via alchemy and mercury being in gatorade, more than anything else.

I see a lot of odd comments about fandom from people who hit Harry Potter at just the right moment. They're expecting to recreate that experience where you can write largely original fic about those kids from the other school or that random classmate who is little more than a name and form a whole fandom subsection around it. Sure, I've seen that other times, but it was always... like... Naruto fandom or something.

And then these poor people get into a normal fandom and it's 99% a ship or two of leads and the overall size and duration of even that is limited. "Where did [that energy/side character stans/etc.] gooo?" they cry. But they didn't go anywhere. This is just what fandoms more typically look like.

There have been some exceptions, but for the most part, the fics I've written that have gotten the most attention have all either been in fandoms with >10k fics on AO3, or written in a time when the fandom was still active due to having new (usually disappointing, because nothing motivates a fandom like disappointment) content within the past 2 months or so. Or sometimes both!

But if we just look at the >10k works part, and if we're including big meta-fandoms and ignoring the way there's overlap, I get 329 fandoms on AO3 with more than 10k works according to my most recent stats pull.

Here's a really rough breakdown:

  • 4 fandoms over 500k fics
  • 26 fandoms between 100k and 500k fics
  • 48 fandoms between 50k and 100k fics
  • 252 fandoms between 10k and 50k fics

And now I'm curious about the top-kudosed fanfic in these fandoms, and whether there's a straightforward relationship between highest amount of kudos and number of fics in the fandom, so time to go pull those numbers. I'm going to guess there isn't, other than the top-kudosed fics in each of these fandoms most likely being ones with a kudos count that'll seem completely absurd to me, a person who feels like anything over 20 kudos is a lot and anything over 100 is a truly astounding response. Off to look at that.

That average is low already, but here's a quick graph to give a better sense of what's going on. (This still has the overlapping metatags in it, but it doesn't matter because those huge fandoms basically don't show when you look at it this way.)

The buckets are pretty arbitrary. I mainly chose them so that you could see everything on one graph.

Around 54k of those 60k-odd fandoms have less than 100 works. Around 58k have less than 1,000.

"Basically nonexistent" is the default state of AO3 fandoms.

I hate the whole discourse of: "fanfic writers need to accept criticism so they can improve". Look, I did not post 5k of men blowing their loads so that I can become Hemingway or something, just don't read it if you don't want to, or do read it and drop your damn thanks in the tin.

If you are hesitant to comment on AO3 because it's just fanfic and it probably doesn't matter to the writers, know that I got a one word comment ("Beautiful") on a fic nobody ever has bothered reading before and it made my night. Merry Christmas to me! Seriously, though, comments feel so good to writers! Please feed us! We're hungry!
