i am begging you all to stop treating this site like instagram if you dont want it to be content free by next year

actually i'm reblogging this again with commentary, fuck it.

There's people in the notes talking about "not basing your worth off numbers", and like. that isn't what this post is about. It's not a threat, either, it's a comment on how this site works, at a mechanical level.

Likes are worthless. Let me say that again.

Likes. Are. Worthless.

They don't do anything. They're a bookmark. They were never part of how tumblr works - in the early days we didn't even have a like button, and the site still more or less acts as though we don't. They're personal bookmarks and the only people who "get" anything from them are you (you bookmark the post) and the OP (maybe a very slight serotonin boost), but they don't keep the post in circulation, they don't keep it alive.

Without reblogs, a post will be dead in the water within an hour. No matter how good it is, no matter how many hours of painstaking love and attention its creator put into it, it will be dead within an hour and never seen again. It gets pushed down the dashboard and nobody aside from the followers who were online when it was posted will see it. And there's a huge difference in engagement on posts that get even one lucky reblog from someone with wider reach - that one reblog shows your post to five, ten, fifteen other people, and if one of those people also reblogs it, and so on and so forth, that's how posts stay alive and in circulation. It's like a contagion, but we're sharing creativity instead of disease.

And that matters. That "lifespan" of the post matters, artists and writers give up on this site and go to sites where posts have longer lifespans because it sucks to spend hours of your life, maybe even days, to get two notes and some fucking pocket lint for your efforts. We create for ourselves, but we share because we want people to see it, because that engagement offers positive feedback and encouragement to continue. But more than that, if every post (whether art, fic, gifset, whatever) is dying within an hour or a day of being posted, that means it's not making it onto your dashboard. And if it's not on your dashboard, you won't see it. This kills the site, after a while. You stop seeing the posts, because nobody is putting them on your dashboard, because this site doesn't have an algorithm like twitter and insta's and it shouldn't, it's the last bastion of chronological timelines.

Forgive my giant fucking rant I am so tired right now and full of the plague but like stop acting like artists and writers are just being whiny little babies, or "threatening" to withhold our fucking work (you're not entitled to it! it's ours! if we get nothing out of sharing it we're well within our rights to keep it private!) when we say this site will dry up without reblogs. We're just stating facts.

also I’ve seen some people in the tags say ‘oh there have always been more likes on posts’ no there haven’t ????

these are posts from 2013, look at the ratio

not to sound like a nursing home resident but back then people know that the point of this site was to reblog things and share them, not to bury them away among your other 23k liked posts

It's also very important to my page, as I am talking about the russian war in Ukraine and rely on people spreading the information I post to more and more people. Especially when most of the people I meet on the internet say that they haven't heard ANYTHING about the war in the past time. The media coverage in foreign countries has gone down, now mostly who cares are Ukrainian people, people in the nearest countries who have felt russian agression and know what comes next after russia gets its way, and very little people who genuinely care about Ukraine, social justice and geopolitics. This is a very small amount of people. Most of my posts get up to 60 notes, 100 notes at best. Almost everytime the amount of likes is twice the amount of reblogs. Then the post dies. It is forgotten and noone interacts with it after just a day. It would be okay if I was talking about fandom posts, vents and just random thoughts, which I have tried to eliminate from my blog to provide as much clear and important information as possible. Nope, the videos and photos of war victims, the information about damaged infrastructure, the posts about the needs of weaponry, air defense systems, basic support are all being forgotten and lost among the other posts on this website. It's a matter of life and death and I wish we could get more reach in order to help effectively.

I also heard that people don't like to reblog posts because "they don't know what to write in the tags" or "are scared to write something"

And I'm like??? You don't have to write anything if you don't want to??? It IS nice to get some feedback, but if you're not comfortable with it, just tag it with "art" or "illustration" (at least in my case, I do art)

Likes are nice, but they won't help my posts

Also, it fees a bit unrewarding when a drawing I spent sometimes a WEEK on gest max 5 reblogs...

Call me selfish, but I'm an artist I DO want people to see and like my art!

Cyborg: I can interface with satellites that allow me to perceive and measure countless electric signals and waves flying through space and the atmosphere. I can listen to the sun, live. But sure, let’s all freak out because Beast Boy just figured out he can see shrimp colors.

Beast Boy: Cranky ‘cuz you can’t see shrimp colors, aren’t ya?

Raven, not even looking up from her book: Tch. I can see shrimp colors too, it’s just there’s no way for me to see them without also perceiving 13 overlapping hell dimensions at the same time.

Beast Boy: Wh… what?

Cyborg: Seconded. What?

Raven: Oh it’s all ‘Raven why don’t you talk about yourself more’ until I mention the ‘Everyone’s face is peeled off’ dimension.

@stammed-cleams You. You get it.

If only there were some sort of facility where teenagers could be taught new skills.

Anyway, here's a helpful diagram. When I was hit on the temple this was one of the harder things I had to reteach myself. Don't be shamed into not asking questions, and it's alright if it takes you a while to figure it out. Don't let someone make you feel bad for learning new things, or relearning old ones.

Sometimes, unfortunately, you have to teach yourself. YouTube is a valid option.

yeah okay ill reblog that :]

THEY CAN TELL TIME! They cannot use an increasingly older piece of technology to do it but they’d be fucking dire at sundials too. I can type - I’m shit on a typewriter. I can whisk batter, but not by hand. People need to stop associating their method with the skill itself and shitting on the new generation for outgrowing it.

Dick is probably the nicest civilian ever when he’s in Bludhaven and all the little old ladies who bring him baked goods and his coworkers at the station have no idea he spends the night beating criminals half to death with his escrima sticks, has the kind of insane family & family loyalty you can’t buy, and would have the entire Justice League at his side with just one phone call.
