enough about that other guy, i want to talk about stede in season two.

i want to talk about how he didn't even care that all his things had been destroyed, that his only concern was what that destruction said about ed's state of mind.

i want to talk about how he mucked right in with the crew at jackie'z and on zheng's ship.

i want to talk about that excellent belly flop into the fucking ocean when they found the revenge.

i want to talk about that absolute romantic hero moment on the rocky shoreline, giving the bottle a kiss before tossing it into the sea

i want to talk about how completely he understands ed, from burn the world or die trying to i know (you love me). i know that.

i want to talk about how he remains his bitchy, hapless, cringefail self while still growing as a person and getting better at things. His better may still be worse than other people's good but he's getting there.

i want to talk about how he gave up his swishy red suit because the crew needed him to.

i want to talk about how much more palpably comfortable he is in his own skin this season, with none of the finery that was a shield and a prison for him his whole life.

i want to talk about how he never, ever gave up on ed no matter what. Because stede was in Love, goddamn it, finally, and he was not going to lose that, to death or mutiny or anything else.

season two stede bonnet--i just think he's neat.

cruel that we only saw the sad girl yoga pants outfit from the back. anyway,

[ID: a greyscale sketchy drawing of Ed Teach, shirtless and in black pants with a chain slung around his hips. his arms are up behind his head. he has a somewhat forlorn expression on his face, amplified by the messy black makeup around his eyes.]

Also obsessed with how Ed says “I reckon what makes Ed happy is … you,” and Stede has this super quick moment of “awww wow wasn’t expecting that I’m blushing.”

And Ed still has an out, if he wants it. This could be another “you wear fine things well” moment, where he leans in, but then quickly assesses the situation and backs off. He could still say “you know, you’ve just been a Really Great Friend, never had one of those before. Thanks for that.” And they could still walk away thinking they shared a nice moment together and maybe this won’t be so bad after all.

But Ed doesn’t want an out this time, he wants Stede to know exactly how he feels. And as soft and sweet and hesitant as the buildup was to that moment (and then honestly even the kiss itself), the initiation of the kiss was swift. He didn’t give Stede time to think “oh he’s just being nice, what a good friend.”

Nope. His intentions are romantic. Stede makes him happy because he loves Stede, and not just as a friend or a co-captain. As a potential lover. And he wants to make it very clear to Stede exactly what he means when he says “what makes Ed happy is you.”

And I know obviously there’s so much grief and heartache that comes later, and maybe Stede wasn’t quite as ready as Ed may have thought, but just the growth in their relationship, and that Ed was willing to take that risk this time…my heart is crying happy tears.

I am pondering swordplay being a canonical metaphor for sex and Ed and Izzy teaching each other how to swordfight and the Implications and also how maybe Izzy didn't misunderstand and think Ed and Stede were actually fucking, maybe he knew exactly what was happening and it was emotionally so much worse
