Emma. I read, I write, I journal, and occasionally I go out into the real world.

It’s been a month and a week since I last sat down to journal. And while that bothers me, I can’t let it bother me enough to not keep journaling. https://www.instagram.com/p/B2KMk6tJdRB/?igshid=1fdqq2frr8hfn

I know I said I would be posting more and then disappeared, but I have a new excuse! I started a new job at an awesome company called Cloth and Paper! Everything I used for these pages is from my new job, either from the online shop or through the subscription box service. If you’re a planner nerd like me you should definitely check them out!

What had you shift from using ball point to ink pens? I love how your journaling pages and am thinking of exploring the ink world. Second question: do you prefer hard or soft cover notebooks? I've been using a hard cover leuchtturm journal for my bullet journal but am contemplating purchasing a soft cover for journaling about the day/week. Glad to have you back :)

Hi! And thank you! Well, there were a couple factors to me switching to fountain pens and ink. Fountain pens give me a finer line than most ballpoint pens or even gel pens, I don’t have to press hard to write and tire out my hand, and I love the color options with bottled ink. And also, fountain pens are just so cool! There is just something fun about writing with a fountain pen that you don’t quite get with your average ballpoint.

As far as the notebook question, I generally prefer hardcover notebooks, but I have used softcovers before too. I tend to write in my lap or on pillows a lot and so I like having the hardcover to have hard to write on. If that’s not really a concern for you though, why not try something new? Feel free to message me if you want to talk more!

Hi Emma, I just bought a bottle of Ecoline for drawing. But I also thought about putting it in my Lamy Fountain pen since the color is so beautiful. But I'm still unsure, are Ecolines fountain pen friendly? I mean they are dye based so it shouldn't be a problem right?!

As far as I can tell the answer here is actually no. Ecoline inks are pigmented inks as far as I’m aware, which means they aren’t particularly good for fountain pens because they will clog them. Have you tried color matching the Ecoline ink to an ink meant for fountain pens? Most online retailers have pretty good selections and will let you sample inks first! Hope this helps!

Hi Emma! I am looking to buy a Leuchtturm notebook to use as a bullet journal when I start college in the fall. Is the A5 the same size as the Master Classic? I know the master is bigger than an A4 but I don’t know if the A5 is smaller than the A4 or in between it and the Master

Avatar

Hi! An A5 is smaller than an A4, I believe it’s about half the size. An A5 is typically about the size of your average journal or book. Officially it’s 148 x 210 millimeters, or 5.8 x 8.3 inches. In general with international sizes the higher the number the smaller the size by roughly half of the number before it. I pulled this handy chart off the internet to help illustrate:

Hope this helps!

ahh, I’m saving up to buy another fountain pen, because mine has been destroyed by my dogs. anyway, do you have any recommendations for a good one?

Yikes, that’s unfortunate. My pup hasn’t destroyed any pens yet, but my siblings certainly have. So that’s a pretty broad question, a better recommendation would depend on what preferences you had. In my humble opinion though, you can go wrong with a Pilot. From the Metropolitans on up they are solid writers. I’d say look at a Metropolitan, a Prera, a Custom 74, or a Vanishing Point. These are all pens I own and would recommend to other fountain pen users. Hope this helps and please feel free to message me for a more in-depth recommendation!

Hello. I hope you are doing well. I've just ordered my first fountain pen and bottle of ink. I ordered the Jinhao 8802 and Waterman ink. Have you ever tried any of that brand of ink?

Avatar

Hi! And congrats, I hope you enjoy them! So I don’t currently have any Waterman inks, but I have tried them at pen shows and I had no problems with them. I ended up buying other inks because of color options, not because I didn’t like the way the Waterman inks wrote. Definitely let me know how the ink worked out for you!

Hi, I have a question about Moleskines and fountain pens. I know they are not known to be fountain pen friendly. I have one in my notebook stash and I have loved these notebooks in the past, but it was because I was only using ballpoint pens on them. I still want to use the notebook, but I have started journaling in fountain pens. Any advice on nib sizes, inks, or other advice? I adore your journaling style and you are an inspiration!

Hello! And thank you so much for your kind words, they really made me smile!

I’ll admit that I am no longer a user of Moleskines because they aren’t particularly fountain pen friendly, and I journal almost exclusively with fountain pens. With the Moleskine paper, you’re going to want to stick to finer nibs and dryer inks. Broad nibs and wet inks put more down on the page and with all that ink you run the risk of feathering, intense ghosting, and even bleeding. I would recommend using fine and extra fine nibs. As far as inks, check out the reviews of the ink you’re using, many will tell you if the ink is considered to be more wet or dry. Avoid the ones that are said to me wet to very wet and you should be good! Sorry for the late reply and I hope this helps!

Emma!! Sweetie you’re super sweet, and such a kind soul! I wish I were friends w/ you! I have a quick question: I love to journal, I write everyday and I am an avid journaler. It’s my favorite hobby. But I’ve been thinking lately, how is it done? Sometimes I don’t know what to write or how to express myself or if what happened in my day is worth writing down. So, how do YOU Journal? Prompts, you just write what happened, even if it’s uneventful? I mean, just how?

Oh wow, thank you so much! I always want to get to know people and make new friends, just send me a message!

I frequently have journaling block when I don’t know what to write and it feels like my mind has just gone blank. I have a couple techniques for how to deal with that:

  • Write stream of thought style - literally whatever thought passes through my mind is what goes down on paper, no editing in my head, just write it down. It can be simple thoughts, complex thoughts, stuff that is completely unimportant, it doesn’t even really have to make sense. Generally, I find that one of the thoughts sparks another and before I know it I’m a couple paragraphs in and the spark is back.
  • Events of the day - this is when I detail what I did during the day, and sometimes that’s literally all I write. It can be as simple as going over the bigger events, or very detailed - like what I bought at the grocery store. If I want to write more I might add how these events affected my mood throughout the day. If I didn’t do much during the day I try to write about why I wasn’t very active or productive, or I simply write that I didn’t do much and leave it at that.
  • Sensations - sometimes when I don’t have a subject to write about I decide to take stock of where I am right at that moment. I focus on each of my five physical senses one at a time and write about what I’m getting from each of them. I actually adapted this from a technique I was taught to help me stop overthinking things. Turns out it works both ways, it can halt unwanted thoughts in their tracks but it can also spark some inspiration to write.
  • Prompts - and last, but certainly not least, there are journaling prompts to get you started. I have a jar of prompts I got from @isakteriyaki (unfortunately not on tumblr anymore as far as I know) and when I’m struggling for something to write I pull one out and see where it takes me. @journalingjunkie is no longer active on tumblr either, but her previous monthly prompts should still be available. A quick google search will bring up sources for journaling prompts, or you can try making your own! I’m also going to try my hand at making some, so look out for those!

I hope this might be helpful, even if it has been a good long time since I received this question. Sorry about that and happy writing!

An Explanation, The Plan, and A Question

First off, thank you so much to everyone who is still here after my prolonged absence, I truly appreciate it. Second, my deepest apologies for said absence, I know it’s been a very long time since I was posting regularly. In the past year, I have been struggling with my mental health and regular blogging was something I just couldn’t keep up. For those of you who don’t know, I have been fighting with depression for many years and more recently I was diagnosed with ADHD so it’s been a bit of a roller coaster in terms of mental health. I’ve also been in school this past semester and that has sucked up a lot of my time. I have turned a corner, however, and am working hard to get myself in a better mindset.

With that being said, I’m back! And hopefully for good. May is mental health month and I can’t think of a better month to kickstart my comeback. Beginning this month I am planning on getting back to regular posting, both on Tumblr and Instagram. In addition, I have several Youtube videos in the works so be on the lookout for those! I am also planning on answering all the questions in my inbox, no matter how old they are. I know some of them will probably no longer be relevant for the person who asked them, but if there is a chance my answer will still be helpful I want to take that chance. I’m going to try and answer about five a day and hopefully, I’ll get through the backlog fairly quickly. And please send me whatever current questions you may have!

My question to you all is, what would you like to see from me content-wise in the future? Please feel free to send me requests and ideas and I will see what I can come up with! I have been contemplating creating my own monthly journaling prompts, would anyone be interested in something like that?

Thank you for reading and for sticking with me through my difficult times. Here’s to the future!

All my love,

Emma
