Godric - Knigt Extraordinaire, Heroes of Might and Magic V
Good day and welcome to the blog - My name is Dalladon and I will be taking you through the madness as we look at Videogames, Boardgames, and their characters. Including the madness that slip along when my mind is racing and there is no brakes. The games we are gonna look at will be varied in all shapes and colours, but has to have a Three-dimensional characters, and my view on them. The first character we will discuss (And refer back to), is Godric
Godric Unicorn - Is a Supporting Character to the Heroes of Might and Magic V storyline, and a main protagonist in Clash of Heroes, both of which I have had the pleasure of seeing through with this galant knight. What first springs to mind with Godric when first encountered in HoMM V is that he is a Traditionalist and a Loyalist to his Griffin Empire. We see him at the start as a very abiding Knight who follows the rules and commands of his Liege, and he is by far to start off with, a very generic and by the book sorta Knight.
You know the drill, Damsel in Distress saving, For the King, and No man left behind sorta gent. But when we first ever encounter Markal in the storyline (Granted he has some redeem in character when he rescues Isabel, but he is still very oldfashioned and patronizing about it), this is where Godric shines as a character for me, because all of a sudden, it becomes personal, and yet through it all he remains very professional and loyal to his character, while our main protagonist at the time - Isabel, shows reliability to be extremely gulible and not fit to be a monarch, Godric protects the faith and future of an entire Empire on his own.
In essence to recap why Godric hates Markal is tributed mostly to his sister Fiona, who married Alexei, Nicolai's father. She was heavily influenced by Markal, and his dark arts, was lured into the dark web of Asha, the spidergodess. Even after her death Markal still morbidly carried her skull around, probably to the anger and frustration of the aging warrior.
Why is this different from other characters I am familiar with? Usually this type of heroic character would be killed off during a major fightscene, or fighting to save the orphans. In the storyline his end is alot more pointless and token - While it is rather overdramatic, and his final words are proud, inspiring, and probably sets our main heroine in the first expansion on her way, it seems so simple and basic, no glory for the old knight, just a tragic end by the hand of a sadist.
When that is said - as a pure gamer opinion - I do believe it when TheMeinteam says that Godric, exists only to cause trouble for everyone, because like it or not Godric will always do what's right, and therefore will turn on you when you play morally questionable characters. Such as Aregal and Markal.
Whether you like him or not Godric is a Knight that never backed down, and had to suffer for it.
