Considering Africa is a continent with 54 different countries and over 3000 different ethnic groups, it really shouldn’t surprise people that there is no one set look for an African.

Mohamed Bzeek, a Libyan-born Muslim, has been fostering terminally ill children for the past two decades. Since then, he has buried 10 children, some of who have died in his arms.

One of his foster children is a six-year-old girl who has a rare brain defect. As a result, she’s deaf, blind, and her arms and legs are paralysed. “I know she can’t hear, can’t see, but I always talk to her,” he said. “She has feelings. She has a soul. She’s a human being.” He took this young girl under his wing when she was just one month old. Mohamed’s biological son, Adam, was born in 1997 with brittle bone disease and dwarfism.

The DCFS said that Mohamed is the man they always call when they need to find a placement for a shock child. “He’s the only one that would take a child who would possibly not make it,” said a DCFS coordinator. In fact, he’s the only foster parent in the country that is known to take terminally ill children.

Interestingly, though The Grinch Who Stole Christmas is narrated by Boris Karloff, the big musical number is sung by the late Thurl Ravenscroft - an American voice actor better known as the voice of Tony the Tiger.

My headcanon is that the Grinch and Tony the Tiger had a bad breakup, and “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” is the resulting breakup song.

As the lava lamps bubble and swirl, a video camera on the ceiling monitors their unpredictable changes and connects the footage to a computer, which converts the randomness into a virtually unhackable code.

Codes created by machines have relatively predictable patterns, so it’s possible for hackers to guess their algorithms, posing a security risk. Lava lamps, add to the equation the sheer randomness of the physical world, making it nearly impossible for hackers to break through.

You might think that this would be kept secret, but it’s not. Simply go in and ask to see the lava lamp display. By allowing people to affect the video footage, human movement, static, and changes in lighting from the windows work together to make the random code even harder to predict.

So, by standing in front of the display, you add an additional variable to the code, making it even harder to hack. Isn’t that interesting?

For anyone wondering, this is amazing enrichment for the animal and a great way to involve guests! The lions aren’t forced to play with the rope if they don’t want to, and these guys (and anyone else who tries this out) have an awesome close up and hands on experience, all without having to come in direct contact with the cat!

This definitely counts as #actually cute. This video is from the San Antonio Zoo, and the lioness’ name is Axelle. As @ordinaryredtail said above, the tug of war interaction is entirely voluntary on her part.

My guess is that the zoo staff did use some positive reinforcement training to teach her how to pick up and pull on the rope at first, because that’s not necessary something a lion would just do on their own. While it’s also probable that she’s rewarded with something tasty did choosing to engage with the members of the public like this, Axelle wouldn’t be engaging if it was a negative experience for her (there aren’t enough snacks in the world to coerce a lion into doing something they find actively distressing). If she didn’t want to participate, she could just walk away.

Some sanctuary and animal rights groups have taken issue with this interaction because they consider it unethical to ask a lion to engage in any “unnatural behavior” “for the benefit of the public,” calling it exploitation. It is worth keeping in mind, however, that learning and engaging in novel behaviors is hugely enriching for animals in human care, and that lions have no concept of exploitation. As long as the lion is not bothered by the presence or noise of the crowd, is not injured or harmed, and is engaging on an entirely voluntary basis, this sort of thing is entirely ethical. It is far safer than any type of interaction where a member of the public is coming into direct context with a big cat, but still allows people to directly experience the sheer strength of a lion up close.

What I also find interesting the lioness has a basic understanding of physics, even if she isn’t thinking about it in forms of equations or anything the way we would.  She put herself with the rope at an angle.  She’s strong, yes, but the guys will have to pull much harder than she would have to pull because of the angle she created.  If they wanted to make it a more even match, the guys should be pulling at the opposite angle to straighten out the curve she’s created.  The lioness outsmarted them.

Clarifying I’m not super up to date on this whole thing: has anyone considered the relationship was possibly abusive from both ends? I’m not sure how common that occurs but I’ve met people (through school) who were strong enough to admit a toxic former relationship where both parties actively abused each other. It’s fucked up but I wonder if anyone’s considered this at all…?

FUcking disgusting.  Also, admit when you were wrong!  I was wrong.  I read the information coming out, I saw Amber’s pictures and considering 1) how common it is for men to abuse their partners and 2) the age difference making it even more likely, I didn’t doubt Amber’s story for a second and I don’t blame anyone else who did.  The more that came out, the more that was revealed, the more I had to swallow my pride and admit that I was wrong. You’re not being weak keeping your mind open to new evidence.  I still don’t think Johnny Depp should have ever entered into a relationship with a woman young enough to be his daughter but that does not in ANY way make what Amber Heard did here okay.
