So I just saw a post by a random personal blog that said “don’t follow me if we never even had a conversation before” and?????? Not to be rude but literally what the fuck??????????

I’ve had people (non-pornbots) try to strike conversation out of nowhere in my DMs recently, and now I’m wondering if they were doing that because they wanted to follow me and thought they needed to interact first. I feel compelled to say, just in case, that it’s totally okay to follow this blog (or my side blog, for that matter) even if we’ve never talked before.

Also, I’m legit confused. Is this how follow culture works right now? It was worded like it’s common sense but is that really a thing?

Saw a sharp increase in my follower count after posting this. The legitimacy of it is driving me nuts so I also feel the need to say that you can follow anyone on here regardless of whether you’ve interacted with them or not. People like the above mentioned blog are exceptions. Perhaps they themselves think they aren’t and therefore will act like they aren’t, but they are, trust me.

Just follow anyone you wanna follow. The worst thing that can happen is maybe getting soft-blocked by the other person, but if they do soft-block you, then they were never that worth following in the first place.

PSA: Don't use Open Office

I keep seeing people recommending Open Office as an alternative to Word, and uh... look, it is, technically, an open source alternative to Word. And it can do a lot of what Word can, genuinely! But it is also an abandoned project that hasn't been updated in nine years, and there's an active fork of it which is still receiving updates, and that fork is called LibreOffice, and it's fantastic.

Seriously, if you think that your choices are either "grit your teeth and pay Microsoft for a subscription" or "support free software but have a kind of subpar office suite experience", I guarantee that it's because you're working with outdated information, or outdated software. Most people I know who have used the latest version of LibreOffice prefer it to Word. I even know a handful of people who prefer it to Scrivener.

Open Office was the original project, and so it has the most name recognition, and as far as I can tell, that's really the only reason people are still recommending it. It's kind of like if people were saying "hey, the iPhone 14 isn't your only smart phone option!" but then were only ever recommending the Samsung Galaxy S5 as an alternative. LibreOffice is literally a version of the same exact program as Open Office that's just newer and better – please don't get locked into using a worse tool just because the updated version of the program has a different name!

I use LibreOffice. It's wonderful.

maybe this is an unpopular opinion but even when i'm absolutely obsessed with characters, i don't care at all about the actors who play them. they're just people, why are y'all putting them on a pedestal.

The only time I care about who the actor of a character is, is if I can cross over with other characters the actor has played.

This is a super super gentle reminder not to put your favorite authors on a pedestal. We're real people living average lives and not trying to be influencers. We criticize ourselves enough and we don't want to be held to an invisible standard (we start to worry we fail to exceed our own selves) or compared to other writers (we are not competing) or tailor our craft to cater to a wider audience (the right people will find you).

Yeah, this is exactly what I'm afraid of. The writers/artists you love want you to create what you do I promise I promise. Our work is not more important than yours and if you don't get the recognition you feel you deserve that does not reflect on your talent. "Good enough" is not a helpful metric; you are already good enough. Comparison kills creativity. Please don't be so caught up in trying to be like your favorite artists that you think improving is removing all the evidence that it's you who made it

Another AO3 thing I’m curious about, how do yall decide if something is good enough to read? Usually I follow a rule of 1 kudos for every 10 hits. One because it’s easy math and two it’s yet to fail me. Thoughts? Do you just go for it and pray it’s good?

I read the summary and skim the tags.

Kudos to hits is never reliable, esp on multi-chaps. People also open stuff they want to read and take weeks/months/years to actually get back to it and read it, and that impacts those numbers too. I haven't studied this or anything, but I personally feel open-and-add-to-TBR happens even more if the work is part of a high-production period like a bang. I for sure have a lot of tabs going from a bang posting atm. So yeah. Skim the tags for tags that are DNR for you. Then summary. Summary!!! If they can write a summary, they can write a story. (Or if they use a snippet for the summary and it's good, logic follows...)
