shit ton of people are repeating the thing about hayao miyazaki saying AI art is an "insult to life itself" and just as a reminder he was talking about the zombies that team made that were intended to be scary in how much they shook, but instead reminded him of his disabled friend. the insult to life itself was referring to the team trying to make scary real symptoms that people live with.

personality disorder stigma

is being taught to students in colleges

something that i can’t recall mentioning much on here, if at all, is the ableism that is taught within certain educational fields towards people with personality disorders.

for those of you who might be unaware, specific courses do involve the mention of personality disorders and these are often introduced with the DSM criteria combined with negative stereotypes and stigma surrounding these disorders.

this isn’t specific to cluster b disorders either.

my experience

i studied forensic science and criminal psychology in college for 2 years, during which, an aspect of my course included the mention of 3 personality disorders: AntiSocial Personality Disorder (ASPD), Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) and Paranoid Personality Disorder (PPD).

these disorders were mentioned in a highly unprofessional manner and pushed us to associate these disorders with crime. we were taught to correlate ASPD and NPD with serial killers and to link PPD with school shootings. we were then asked to research known serial killers and to find ones with these specific conditions.

pushing these ideas only negatively impacts people with these disorders as it forces the narrative that people with personality disorders are dangerous criminals, which in most cases couldn’t be further from the truth. it also then results in people from these courses going into professional fields and holding this prejudice towards those they come across with these disorders.

our education surrounding these personality disorders was very limited and, as i already mentioned, the areas that we were educated on, we were being taught to demonise them by associating them with violent crimes.

how it impacted me

i felt unwelcome in these spaces and as though i was being forced to be alienated from my peers as someone with ASPD and NPD.

it was dehumanising and demoralising to have to sit in a classroom and listen to people say that your conditions are dangerous and violent.

this needs to stop.

people with personality disorders are not inherently dangerous and it is harmful to push that misinformation, especially within an educational environment where people rely on you to tell them the truth and are easily influenced by what they are taught. people with personality disorders are deserving of understanding and acceptance.

it is never alright to make students feel that their medical conditions make them unwelcome to study in an educational field.
