“I’ve definitely had worse surprise relatives.” Jessica accepted the gift with a small smile, fidgeting with a corner of paper that hadn’t quite gotten folded in right.
“Sorry. I, uh, didn’t get you anything…” In part because she hadn’t known what to get for her time displaced, adult daughter. It was a really weird situation. But, in larger part, it had been because she couldn’t remember the last time she’d celebrated Christmas. Not really. The tradition with Trish had been ordering Chinese and watching dumb movies and ignoring the holiday altogether. And then, after Kilgrave… the traditions were gone and she’d really lost her sense of time.

“Aw, you’re gonna make me blush.” Dani grinned, looking down shyly. “And don’t worry, I don’t need anything. I’m just glad I’m able to stay with you.” Any material present paled in comparison to being able to live with her mom again, to wake up in the morning and make them breakfast and help with her cases. It almost made being stranded in this universe worth it, for a chance to reconnect the woman that was long dead in her own world, along with many other fallen heroes.

“Go ahead, open it.”

“I didn’t take it.” She totally took it.” It’s still in the apartment.” Hidden in the closet. “Why would I do anything to mess with that shield?” She was tempted to use it as a plate for nachos one night, never did though.”Is this because I forgot the stakeout doughnuts?”
Image

“You’re totally lying.” Dani accused. crossing her arms. “You have your lying face on.” Because Andi still thought she could pull one over on Dani, despite how many times she’s tried. “And no, it’s not because of the doughnuts. But thanks for reminding me, because that was also devastating and I haven’t forgiven you yet.”

“   barnes   and   rogers   did   what   ?!   ”         there   is   something   decidedly   deadly   in   the   tone   of   her   voice,   a   flash   of   something   in   her   eyes.   it’s   not   like   she   doesn’t   want   dani   to   train,   to   be   prepared   but   .  .  .   she’s   growing   so   fast.   it’s   like   yesterday   that   she   asked   for   bedtime   stories   and   now   she   wants   to   kick   ass   with   captain   fucking   america.   jessica   doesn’t   know   how   to   come   to   terms   with   that.         “   sweetheart,   we   talked   about   this.   no   superhero   type   things   until   you’re   older.   it’s   too   dangerous   and   you’re   going   to   end   up   hurt.   ”         a   sigh,   fingers   pressing   into   her   temple   to   relieve   the   headache.         “   how   about   we   go   out   when   me   and   dad   go   back,   huh   ??   we’ll   get   uncle   danny   and   i’m   sure   i   can   even   convince   matt   to   come   if   he’s   not   busy   bleeding   in   an   alley.   go   somewhere   warm.   ”

“Uhhh - nevermind.” Dani backtracked quickly before her mom decided to kill the two superheroes. “But you’ve been saying that for years! I’m fifteen now and that’s about how old Uncle Peter was when he first started!” Probably around the age of when her mom started too, though she knew better than to bring that part up. She crossed her arms, pressing her lips together in an almost-pout. “I’m invulnerable like dad is! I won’t get hurt!” At least, she was pretty sure her abilities extended as far as her dad’s went, though she had never been able to test that theory. Dani sighed heavily - her mom was as stubborn as she was, perhaps even more. “Fine, but you have to promise!”

thing   is,   jessica   jones   has   been   through   some   shit,   from   being   mind   controlled   by   a   psycho   to  constant   threats   that   are   waiting   just   around   the   corner.   and   yet   having   a   teenage   daughter   is   definitely   the   hardest   thing   she’s   had   to   deal   with.   not   because   danielle   is   a   difficult   child.   but   because   teenagehood   sucks.   however,   how   the   fuck   do   you   tell   your   kid   that   her   dad’s   been   dragged   into   some   shit   again   ??   this   was   way   easier   when   she   could   just   .  .  .   lie   about   it.   as   terrible   as   that   sounds.         “   i   need   you   to   stay   with   aunt   carol   a   couple   days,   baby.   dad’s   not   here   because   he’s   .  .  .   caught   up   with   something,   and   i   need   to   go   save   his   ass   before   he   does   something   stupid.   ”
Image

“Again? Seriously?” She loved staying with Aunt Carol, and every other aunt and uncle she got saddled with when her parents were dragged away from time to time, but it was getting old. It sounded spoiled and stuck-up, but it really was. Other kids would jump at the chance to spend their weekends with various superheroes, but Dani had been doing it since she was a kid. “Can’t I come with you? I have powers too, just like you and dad, and Uncle Steve and Uncle Bucky have been teaching me some moves!” Dani grinned, trying to make it seem like she wasn’t begging. “We can save dad together! I’ll even wear a mask and everything just in case!”

“Hey, Spidey!” Dani leaped down next to him, knocking over the villain-of-the-week he was currently combating. “Why do you always get the animal-themed villains? Is it because spiders are kinda animals? I’m just saying - I rarely get to fight anyone in an animal costume and it’s definitely unfair.” Instead, she got N*zis and government conspiracies - not as enjoyable.

“Happy early Christmas!” Dani smiled, holding out a small, precariously wrapped gift ( wrapping paper ripped too easily, it was impossible to work with ). Inside was a dark purple scarf and a matching hat. “It - uh, it’s not much because I’m pretty much broke but...I figured I should thank you for putting up with me for so long. I know you didn’t expect to be supporting a grown-up daughter and letting her live in your house so...thank you.”

“Andi, from the bottom of my heart...” Dani took one step closer to the younger girl, putting on her best ‘business’ face. “If you don’t tell me where my shield is, I will have absolutely no problems with using other, unseemly ways of making you talk.” By which, she meant either tickling or running Andi ragged on patrol tonight, obviously, which were both surely brands of torture.

“Mom...as much as I love these family meetings, I can’t help but notice that dad is conspicuously absent.” Dani was at the part of being a teenager where despite still retaining her good-natured, eager attitude, she had also developed a bit of an attitude ( mostly used to the detriment of her parents ). “So either this isn’t that important and can wait until later, or about dad. And I’m pretty sure dad’s birthday isn’t for another three months.”

“I’m thinking about officially joining SHIELD’s academy. It would be nice, we didn’t have that in my universe, and I think I’d do well, probably better than I would with the College aspect.” She shrugged. “I’ve been good, still adjusting to all of this, but I’ll get used to it, eventually. It’s really nice though, to live in a world where you aren’t run by Nazi assholes.”
Image

“Oh, that’s awesome!” She’d passed on SHIELD academy, only because she didn’t want crimefighting to be her only passion. “Yeah, I like to think it’s nice too. There’s the added bonus that if you do run into a Nazi asshole, nobody’s stopping you from just decking them, which is nice.” It was probably one of her favorite things to do, in all honesty, as a pansexual biracial woman and Captain America.

El nodded her head at the other girl as she wiped the tears from her eyes. She didn’t want her father to take her, and she was glad that Dani was going to try and help in preventing that. At the other girl’s words, Jane took deep breaths. IN and OUT. IN and OUT. Her shoulders bobbed up and down with every breath she took. El looked down. “He always finds me… He was just quicker this time.” One of the reasons she was always getting switched around with foster parents was because her father was always following her trail. She shook her head, she had no clue as to where her father would make his headquarters. “Maybe a lab?”
Image

“Well I promise you, he ain’t gonna get you this time either, no matter how quick he is.” No, she hated seeing El in such a state. She was gonna beat this guy black and blue and make sure he never saw her ever again. “A lab?” She opened her phone, looking up labs in their proximity to New York. “Do you think it’s a private lab that you’d recognize the name of? Or some abandoned faciliity that he’s holed up in like a villain?” There were too many labs to search each one, and El didn’t want her to involve her parents, which meant she couldn’t ask her mom if she knew any of the labs were shifty enough to be hiding a stalker.
