A Question of Intent

Hi, I'm Kiri. This is the Tumblr mirror of my Sketchblog. Please do not repost my work without permission.

Hmm. Still trying to figure out what/whether I want to post here directly. Recently set my Tumblr accounts to discourage all bots, since Tumblr doesn't exclude ChatGPT in their robots.txt list of excludes, which is kinda hmm when 1) they said they would, and 2) they exclude lots of other stuff. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But aside from data training concerns, Tumblr's photo upload has just been really annoying lately.

Here are some recent posts I made to my sketchblog.

Back on my bullshit.

Kind of funny to take pics of a zine appealing to drivers while literally in a bike lane, but I was happy I managed these photos within the light cycle lol.

Scribbly screenshot redraws from my fav ep of Gundam SEED where the OTP scream at each other and cry a lot lol….

Me: I don't care that much about Enemies to Lovers. Also me: This whole fucking scene though. 🥹🥹🥹

A weird way to find out that your fav Gundam got another sequel two months ago is Bandai Namco sponsoring Sakura-Con and going ham with promo materials. And they ain't even give me a way to watch the damn thing.

The trailers look pretty whatever to me because it focuses on characters I care considerably less about while my fav barely makes the poster, pff. Also I'm being forced again to acknowledge the other sequel. Unpleasant. You bet I'm still gonna fuckin' watch it though, as soon as I have a way to actually do that.

Anyway, I see y'all out there interacting with this oldass post lolllllll.

My Sakura-Con tabling streak: I LIVED, BITCH. 🌸

Table 2210 in EF4 (4th floor of the Arch, where AA was last year, where Dealers used to be).

I got off the waitlist Tuesday night, right after I'd made peace with not tabling for the first time in a decade. :V

Since there's no Art Show this year, I brought a ton of originals with me. Please give them homes so I can have less stuff in my studio, as traditional artists are cursed to do.

Also, medium fanart prints are discounted because most of these are quite old and I also want them to be gone.

If you'll be at the con, consider bringing cash or coming earlier/later in the day, as reception will definitely be poor during peak hours, making it difficult to run card transactions (which require Internet verification).

Thanks and see yall soon! 🌸 🌸 🌸

Hi! I was wondering, do you accept commissions for tattoo designs? Your ink lineart is just so gorgeous!

Thank you! Glad you like my inkwork. It's definitely my favourite medium. x3

I am generally down to take commissions intended for tattoos whenever commissions are open, which they aren't currently.

I have a tattoo release available for any of my non-commission existing work that folks might want tattooed, but tbh I recommend finding a tattoo artist whose work you like and working with them directly to create your tattoo. Inking on skin and inking on paper are different, and your tattoo artist will have a much better idea of what might work in practice than I would.

Also see: FAQ, Commissions.

Hi, do you have tips for how you got into finding local art events and community places, and also nature places to go? When I try googling things it thinks I’m a tourist looking to plan a vacation, aha.

I want to get out and do things but I always end up like, but where do I go? How do I find out what’s going on?

So I figured I’d ask, how do you find out what’s going on?

(if it helps, I live about an hour aware from Seattle, tho I’m new to driving)

Go to a cafe or library and look at their community message board! Public message boards are usually plastered with local events of all varieties. You won't always find art-related events, but it's still a good way to see what sorts of things are happening in your area.

Figure out what social media platform your community likes to organise on. For Seattle, this seems to largely be Instagram since it's easy to set up and manage multiple accounts. Browse tags related to your area and whenever you find an art event, follow that account. Chances are they'll be sharing similar events in addition to their own. Figure out who the organisers are and follow them as well! (Bal-Art shares lots of events to its Stories; usually Seattle-area but sometimes nearby areas too.)

Do you have a local newspaper? Even if it's online-only, there's almost always some kind of community events page. Any hyperlocal neighbourhood blogs? Same deal.

Any local farmers' markets? There tends to be decent crossover between the farmer's markets and art markets, in terms of both vendors and customers. Ask vendors what other events they're gonna be at!

Seattle has tons of neighbourhood art walks and lots of small pop-ups try to line up with them. Here are a few! Does your area have art walks? Google around?

  • Pioneer Square: 1st Thursdays
  • Capitol Hill: 2nd Thursdays
  • Belltown: 2nd Fridays
  • Ballard: 2nd Saturdays
  • Georgetown: 2nd Saturdays
  • Uptown/Lower Queen Anne: 3rd Thursdays

If you're only an hour out, transit should be an option if you don't want to deal with driving (and parking). Tacoma, Bellevue, and Lynnwood all have express buses that run to Seattle, iirc.

As for nature places -- nothing wrong with taking tourist recommendations, tbh. We're surrounded by mountains and forests and natures and there are soooo many options for nature! Not sure what you want to do in nature, but if it's hiking, WTA is a good place to start. You can look up trails based on a ton of criteria and it's great.

For Seattle specifically, we have soooo many great parks. Discovery Park, Carkeek, and Seward all have good hikes and views. Kubota Japanese Garden in Renton is also a gem.

Hope that helps!

Follow-up question about your site, sorry! I was wondering how you got the read time for your posts and how you set your store's URL to "store.kiriska.com"? Are they plugins? I'd love to have an easy URL for my store like that when I open it. Sorry for bugging you!

Read time is a plugin.

The store is on a subdomain, which points to a different WordPress installation (and uses WooCommerce). Depending on your domain situation, you should be able to set up any number of subdomains and point them to whatever you want (as long as the destination allows for it). So if you wanted to have your store at Shopify or Storenvy or whatever, you should be able to point it there.

No worries at all about website questions! I'm all for people exploring making their own sites!

I wrote a blog post about some website basics a while back, though I suppose I'll need to edit it to no longer really rec Tumblr as a "web host."

I've been sitting on a WordPress-specific post for literally years, but have mixed feelings about it I guess. I don't think WP is as beginner-friendly as it'd like to pretend to be, and while technically open-source, Automattic does still have a strong hand in its ongoing development, and I haven't liked its development direction in a while, personally.

That said, there are absolutely no shortage of WP resources out there, which makes it more accessible than some alternatives, imo.

Hello! I love your website layout. I was wondering if you used a theme? Is it a WordPress site? It looks really nice and thank you for always being such a fantastic resource provider for artists!

Hello! Yes, I have a self-hosted WordPress site using a custom child theme of Donovan.

There are lots of free or low cost themes available these days, though I'd caution against "super themes" that try to cover every possible use case of a website by over-designing and over-complicating itself.

Good luck!

PSA: Tumblr/Wordpress is preparing to start selling our user data to Midjourney and OpenAI.

you have to MANUALLY opt out of it as well.

to opt out on desktop, click your blog ➡️ blog settings ➡️ scroll til you see visibility options and it’ll be the last option to toggle.

to opt out on mobile, click your blog ➡️ scroll then click visibility ➡️ toggle opt out option.

if you’ve already opted out of showing up in google searches, it’s preselected for you. but you also have to opt out for each blog you own separately, so if you’d like to prevent AI scraping your blog i’d really recommend taking the time to opt out. (source)

Good thing I migrated all my shit to my own site (where there are more sensible tags and searchability and often more rambling) a few years ago because it might? be time? to nuke this thing?

I don't really trust a option toggle. Delicate fiddily bits in the face of unrefined mass scraping and data dumps? Feels doubtful.

Dystopia is closing in on all sides.

idk.
