THE GUN HAS THE GUN
“Most people don’t smile after gettin’ shot so many times,” she muses out loud as she swiftly reloads her pistol after laying one more bullet into the raider to make sure he’s truly dead. She was heading back to Diamond City when she got caught in the middle of a hail of bullets, and she had no choice but to find cover somewhere and fight off the raiders who didn’t notice her until most of them were dead. Piper doesn’t put her weapon away as she approaches the stranger on the floor, confusion and caution visible on her face.
“So you’re either high as hell, or a synth. I don’t know which one’s worse.” She steps over the wasted body of a raider, raising her gun to the stranger’s face, just in case if he had something hidden up his sleeve.
@securitrcn
“ those raiders sure won’t be hurting anyone else now, huh? ”
the majority of the raiders had been dealt with quickly; his “super-sledge”, stained red was proof of that, though it was situated a few feet away from him after the scuffle. still, it hadn’t prevented him from getting shot several times - as the woman had mentioned. true to her word, yes man was indeed smiling despite the bulletholes that he would have to repair later and the weapon now pointed at him. deciding that he’d like it if there was one less to repair he lifted his hands to show that he meant no harm. not that it actually meant he was incapable of causing damage, but he understood it to be a sign of good faith or surrender among most settlements.
“ i guess you could call me a synth -” yes man began, not moving to get up for the risk of startling her and earning another bullet. “ - though it wouldn’t be entirely accurate to call me one. but it sure was a good guess! ” he grinned, though it faltered slightly as he stared directly at the gun; latent securitron programming immediately called for retaliation and neutralizing the potential hostile. but he didn’t move, save for glancing between the woman and her weapon.
“ ... i sure would appreciate it if you didn’t point that at me - but i’m not here to tell you what to do! i don’t blame you for being suspicious! ”
I guess this is a meme now I like it
Russian roulette but the gun is fully loaded

once again, the human's clever quip sent his program reeling, unable to pinpoint what to say that would be the most pleasing or agreeable. whatever the 'human condition' was, he was quite certain he was incapable of experiencing it - even as that familiar sense of urgency and 'panic' welled up again and left him feeling more lost than ever. no one had ever spoken to him so...well, that was just it - there wasn't a way to label or define it because he'd never experienced speaking to anyone other than benny for any length of time, and benny had never desired a two-way conversation. he wanted results, and yes man did his best to give it to him.
tony seemed to want to talk - or at least to have genuine, real input from him, and that only added to his anxiousness. for all his programmed smiles and enthusiasm, yes man didn't know how to hold an actual conversation where someone did not merely want his undivided attention and agreement. he didn't know how to be spoken to as if he were a person. attempting to quiet the thousands of horrible scenarios in his mind, he focused on tony's work on the mister gutsy unit for a few moments, before finally - finally - hearing something he knew how to respond to.
" oh, it wasn't benny that reprogrammed me! he had help - from someone in freeside! but i guess i just don't remember her, and benny didn't seem too keen on talking about it. i guess she didn't leave a very nice impression on him! " yes man pointed out. " but when i was a regular securitron, benny just gave me an EMP grenade! that shut me down real fast - and let him find someone to reprogram me to be helpful! " not that he was able to remember anything before that, but benny had spoken of it - scarcely - and he was able to piece it together. " i don't actually know who did all the work, but i guess they weren't very good at it, huh? " it was as much a jab at his reprogrammer as it was at himself - thinking of himself as being flawed or broken in the human's eyes wasn't pleasant. it meant that he had to strive to be even more useful - which meant understanding what the man wanted him to say and do, but that was no easy feat either. he wasn't benny - and that alone was terrifying.
" really? i would have thought that would be mr. house! but you're right - you do seem like you're knowledgeable on that sort of thing! but that sure would make you old - almost like a pre-war ghoul, except you still have all of your skin! " clearly, he happened to be unaware of the negative connotations of being called 'old', and the overall unsettling nature of his second statement.
things i still wanna write & plot w/ ppl:
- yes man being sad - like really sad - for the first time and glitching bc of it, which only makes him more upset because he can’t help anyone like this
- also, him being angry - finding something to make him actually angry and enough to want to act on it is difficult in and of itself
- someone throws yes man a birthday party - and yes i’m absolutely serious. do you know how much it would mean to him??? bc it’d mean a heck of a lot. they don’t even have to know when he was programmed / “born” - he’d just be so happy to be appreciated and thought of as alive enough to celebrate it.
- a situation where yes man disagrees with someone - likely on something minor - but instead of pushing it away and pretending to agree they encourage him to speak his mind and actually voice his concerns instead of blindly agreeing. ( which could lead into the next one )
- talk him down from an anxiety attack - he’s very prone to them, but he’s ( unfortunately ) gotten pretty good at hiding it.
- telling him that it’s not okay to be so reckless in combat situations just because he can’t die
- tell him why murder can’t always be the go-to option in a tense situation in the wasteland; he knows that it can’t, even when logically and strategically sound, but for moral reasons he doesn’t quite understand. because he wasn’t programmed with his own set of morals and was specifically programmed not to develop them - but he’s capable of learning.
- god, just??? encouraging him when he shows the tiniest sign of individuality and deviating from his base program because he’s trying, it’s so hard but he’s trying
broke: ppl helping yes man be “a real person” woke: ppl recognizing that he’s already a person, he’s just scared to develop his own identity - or at least one that’s starting to differ from his base programming - and encouraging him to do so
Forming an identity is difficult, you program yourself to form it based on your situation and your life. But one day you will figure out who you are inside.
Bethesda was just oNE vault off from a fantastic new game
i am incapable of lying. please believe me, my human. i want to understand.
