scale as in „to climb“ comes from the latin scala, for ladder.

scale as in the measuring device comes from the old norse skal, for a drinking vessel sometimes used as a weighing device

scale as in the dermal plating on the skin of some fish and reptiles comes from the old french escale, for shell or husk.

Yesterday (March 23rd 2022), teachers and students went on strike in Catalonia.

Students and teachers protested against the supreme court ruling that reduces the amount of hours that schools and high schools in Catalonia can teach in Catalan, imposing Spanish (already the dominant language) instead.

This comes after a few far right-wing families sued the schools that their children attended (in Catalonia) for using too much Catalan language, instead of Spanish.

Context:

Catalonia is under the rule of Spain since the year 1714. Since then, Spain has tried to exterminate the Catalan language and impose Spanish, a repression that reached its maximum point during the fascist dictatorship led by Francisco Franco, where only Spanish was allowed and children were beaten if they were heard speaking Catalan. The dictatorship lasted from 1939 until the dictator's death in 1975. In democracy, Catalan people fought to have Catalan be fully legal and to be the language used in public schools.

Besides respecting the rights of Catalan people, having Catalan be the language used in schools is important so that the imposition of Spanish doesn't become absolute. Thanks to school, we can assure that the whole society (including Spanish-speaking families and immigrants) can learn the language to participate fully in the society where they live, avoiding the creation of ghettos.

However, Spanish nationalists are against the use of Catalan in public settings. Spanish political parties try to rule on where can Catalan be used, reducing it where they can, whether that be cinemas, streaming platforms like Netflix, product labels, or schools, among others. The objective is to make Catalan useless so that Catalan people will have to abandon our language and use only Spanish instead.

Similar problems happen to the languages of other cultures from the territory claimed by Spain, including Basque, Galician, Caló, Aranese, Asturian-Leonese and Aragonese. But in the last couple decades, Catalanphobia has risen to be a very public and noncontroversial opinion in Spanish politics, used as a rhetoric to gain "easy" votes.

This monologue about children and transexuality is making the rounds in Euskal Herria because it’s been eye-opening for many people. Actress Aitziber Garmendia plays Gorane, a 5 year-old, and her monologue is just gold.

Aragonese, pt. 2

i’ve been wanting to correct the first post i ever made about aragonese, aka this one, and so i thought it would be nice to make another one, almost a year after i started seriously learning it, so here it goes:

Aragonese is a romance language spoken in the Aragonese Pyrenees. It can be referred to as fabla, although it’s considered pejorative by most speakers. In 2011 it was estimated there were around 25,000 speakers, but more up to date numbers say it’s closer to 10,000. There are quite a lot of passive speakers, due to the diglossy of the heritage speakers, which could bring the numbers up to 20,000 or 30,000 if we are being generous.
