Inktober 10 - EZLN

The Zapatistas (named after Mexican revolutionary Emilio Zapata) were founded in 1994 in Chiapas Mexico when the NAFTA ( North American Free Trade Agreement) began. This agreement would be created under the guise of opening trade routes for money, trade, and goods to flow through the US, Canada, and Mexico. But really this a bunch of bs decided between people in power in North American governments. For too long in Mexico and other Spanish speaking countries in Central or South America Indigenous, peoples have been disrespected, kicked off their land, exploited and murdered. Not only that, but their political autonomy has been disrupted and sabotaged by outside (mainly US corporations) seeking to get profit. So, the Ejercito Zapatista de Liberación Nacional banded together to fight the corrupt in the Mexican government and those who it employs. They wore masks to hide their identity and defended their land in the southern region of Chiapas Mexico. I heard many accounts from college students who went to assist them by getting their narrative out. In the beginning it was only small news sources, now even bigger companies like Vice have gone to get “content”. Commandante Marcos, & Ramona (commanders in the people’s army) are gone so what is happening now? They’ve traveled to Mexico City to rally for their rights. There have been members killed…. If you know, leave an update in the comments. Respect to Ezln for their righteous fight for land and dignity. They are one of many indigenous peoples all over the world fighting back.

(snips of the article) “Cruz indicated she was losing patience with the US government…People are drinking off a creek. So I am done being polite. I am done being politically correct. I am mad as hell….So I am asking the members of the press, to send a mayday call all over the world. We are dying here. And if it doesn’t stop, and if we don’t get the food and the water into people’s hands, what we are going to see is something close to a genocide.“

Please donate as much as you are able! Puerto Rico needs help!

As of 9/18 Maria is now a CAT5.

If you are able, donating money is one of the most efficient ways to help in a time of crisis.

After a cursory search these are a few charities that are helping with hurricane relief and are highly rated on charity navigator. International Medical Corps, Direct Relief, Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago, Heart to Heart International, and Helping Hand for Relief and Development

Feel free to add more/let me know if some of the ones I listed are not using funds appropriately.

AMAZON RAINFOREST IN DANGER: Indigenous activist speech during Alicia Keys presentation in Rock in Rio

During Rock in Rio, R&B singer Alicia Keys invited Sônia Guajarara, Brazilian indigenous activist, to make a speech about a serious problem we’re facing: the dissolution of a large area resereve to be used to mineral exploration.

The translation of the speech is below and more information.

There’s a war against the Amazon forest. The indigenous peoples and the environment is being promptly attacked. The goverment wants to put on sale a gigantic area of mineral resources. Next friday there’s going happen a vote on the senate that can stop all this absurd. Senators, you have a chance to avoid that and we’ll be watching; because there’s no plan B, this is the mother of all battles: the battle for the mother Earth (…)”.

To know more about what’s going on:

To help to send messages to the senators in Brazil:

WHY THE AMAZON FOREST IS SO IMPORANT? (if you don’t know yet)

Anonymous asked:

are Brazilians hispanic/latinx bc they are in Latin America without speaking Spanish? If so, are people from Portugal latinx?

if you are born or your family comes from a country within latin america (central & south), then you are a latinxif you are born in spain or portugal or your family comes from those countries, you are not latinx since those countries are within europeBUT if half of your family comes from latin america and the other half from any other region, you are still latinx.- 👑

Please make your voice heard! It’s quick and easy.

I lived in Mexico for 3 years as a child. I was brought to the U.S. at age 4. This is my home and I know nothing more than this country. I am not under DACA because unlike these people I was born in the US before being taken back to Mexico for that brief time.

Like some of these dreamers I dont remember what Mexico was like. My family, home, friends, and job are here. I cannot imagine all this being stripped from me. Then thrown back to a country I know nothing of. We can’t stand around and watch as all of the above is stripped from them.

These dreamers are my friends. I stand with them. I will defend DACA.

Carlota was a Lucumí-Yoruba resistance fighter who led a slave rebellion in Cuba during the mid-19th century.

Kidnapped by slavers as child, Carlota was brought from West Africa to the Matanzas province of Cuba. There she worked as a slave harvesting sugar cane on the Triumvirato sugar plantation. In response to the appalling work conditions and brutal treatment by the Spanish landlords, Carlota began to plan an uprising along with another slave woman named Fermina. However Fermina’s role in the planning was discovered by the Spanish, who had her severely beaten and imprisoned.

Despite this Carlota continued to organise the uprising. Known for both her intelligence and musical skill, she sent coded messages using talking drums to coordinate a series of attacks. As the drums were a traditional instrument among the West African slaves, the Spanish were unaware that the music was also being used a form of communication. On November 3rd 1843, Carlota led a raid which freed Fermina and a dozen other slaves from captivity. On November 5th the uprising began by at the Triumvirato and Acane sugar plantations, forcibly overthrowing the Spanish owners. These attacks were led personally by Carlota, who went into battle wielding a machete.

The uprising continued for a year during which the rebels liberated slaves from at least five large sugar plantations in the Matanzas, as well as from a number of coffee and cattle estates. While many historians have focused on the physical strength of the slaves, their rebellion also showed great sophistication, using advanced guerrilla tactics and coded communication to achieve their goals. Eventually however the forces of the Spanish Governor were able to put down the rebellion due to their overwhelming numbers.

Carlota and Fermina were both captured and executed, and 1844 became known as the ‘Year of the Lashes’ due to the tide of violence inflicted upon the slave population to bring them back into line. However Carlota’s actions created a legacy which inspired numerous subsequent rebellions against white slave owners in the Caribbean. Today there is a monument to her at the Triumvirato sugar mill.
