Pro-homeless posters seen around Seattle. The poster message and it’s design is a direct response to an anti-homeless poster campaign in Seattle a week earlier that used the headline: “SEE A TENT? REPORT IT”

i think our culture’s view of sex is broken. we have dirty sex, casual sex (which is never casual to at least one person, it seems) rough sex, perfunctory sex which is sometimes related to marital sex.

we fuck, we do it, we make love, we screw around.   but there are permutations of sex that fall under an unsanctioned banner that no one talks about:   compassionate sex, grief and mourning sex, healing sex, playful, friendship-sex; the i-wonder-what-they-would-be-like-in-bed sex, consensual extra-marital sex, sex as a salve for old wounds, sex as a salve for pain.

most of us have experienced some or all of these kinds of sex. but our culture relegates them to back corners, hushed confessions and private shame. sex and shame should not go hand in hand—   celebration. sex is a celebration.

you are alive—

we are alive.

How much of this is “genetics”? How much of this is “fate”? How much of this depends on the choices that we make?

The Problem with Adapting for Disability -

The act of adapting products, places, and performances by able-bodied people for disabled individuals is something that has always made me a little uncomfortable. I’ve never been able to explain it; why an act that is supposed to help people like myself sits so awkwardly with me. Surely this is something that I should just be grateful for. This world wasn’t designed for people like me, so shouldn’t I be happy with any attempt to include me in it?

We’ll I think I’ve figured out why it makes me so uneasy… The nature of adapting means that you are taking something specifically designed for a certain user and changing it in order to fit the needs of someone else, someone the  original creator didn’t have in mind as a potential user. In adapting products, places, and performances for disabled people, you are highlighting the fact that those things was never intended to be used by us in the first place. You are taking something, often with a long history of use by able-bodied people, and trying to translate it for a disabled body, but that process is hardly, if ever reversed.

Take ballet for example, there are many adaptive ballet classes designed for disabled people, where able-bodied choreographers take ballet movements, which have a long history and are steeped in tradition, and adapt them so that disabled people can attempt to perform them, often alongside their able-bodied peers. However, the peers of these disabled dancers are never taught dance that has roots in disability, that were designed with our disabled bodies in mind.

Then we have places, which are often adapted with additions such as ramps or viewing platforms, to make them somewhat accessible to physically disabled patrons. More often than not though, the experience within that space by disabled people is still subpar to that had by able-bodied patrons because designers fail to think outside of the box. They design so that a disabled body can merely get into the space or witness what’s inside of it, rather than designing the space so that the experience of those who are disabled is enhanced. To that notion I pose the question; what is a place without the experience you have within it?

In other words disabled people are constantly left to translate, or we rely on others to do it for us, but there is very little that is written in our language, written for us. This is why I  would like to see less adaptation and more innovation. Dances, tools, cultural hubs, meeting places, with roots in our disabled bodies, and in our experiences. I want to see innovators encouraging our peers translate our movements, our ways of being, so they have a greater understanding of our lives  and so that we can have a future of collaborative experiences not  adaptive ones.

Anonymous asked:

Can you explain the stages of rigor mortis?

There are six stages of rigor mortis:

  1. Absent
  2. Minimal
  3. Moderate
  4. Advanced
  5. Complete
  6. Passed

Within the first 8 hours, the body begins to stiffen but it’s still malleable. In the following 4 hours, the muscles become completely rigid, and they stay rigid until the 24 hour to 36 hour mark. At this point, the stiffness goes away and the muscles become flexible. However, this is just a general timeline, as there are plenty of factors that contribute to the acceleration or deceleration of rigor mortis. For example, hot environmental temperatures, drugs that increase body temperature, and convulsions can speed up the process. Cold environmental temperatures, nervous disease, and hypothermia can slow down the process of rigor mortis.

I’d like to write a more in-depth post about this sometime!

I haven’t seen a lot of posts that shed some positivity for non-binary Muslims who wear the hijab – I personally sometimes feel it’s frustrating that people see hijabi non-binary people as “female” just because the hijab is an obligation for women. My hijab does not define my gender; only my obligation to my God and my religion!

Shoutout to all non-binary hijabi Muslims out there; you are valid and Allah loves you, insya-Allah!

this is the most blessed post I thinking ever seen thank you op

Little movement disorder things

When I’m drawing or writing, and my hand begins shaking too violently/painfully to be able to continue, forcing me to stop.

When the tremors get bad, and I can’t type well on my phone or computer, making it a struggle to spell anything correctly. Making it look like I don’t know how to type at all, and making me feel like an idiot.

My hand suddenly flailing and whacking someone next to me, making me look like an asshole.

Trying to fall asleep, when my leg kicks and slams against the wall, jolting me awake.

“How did you get that bruise?” “Dude, I wish I knew.”

Getting sudden, violent tremors down my spine that look like extreme shivers, making people question if I’m okay.

Head twitches, making people look at me funny. Sometimes asking if I’m on drugs.

(Okay to reblog if you don’t feel these things btw. Movement disorders aren’t well known enough)

I feel like I should make a post about this because it’s not something that’s very well-known, and that Americans in particular may need to know about given the uncertain state of our healthcare system at the moment. I’ve wanted to write this out for a while, It’s kind of a long post, so sorry about that!

If you have an emergency and have to go to the hospital, you’ll owe the hospital a lot of money. (I got into a car wreck and broke my ankle and my arm. My hospital bill was around $20,000)

You’ll also owe the ambulance provider, if you need one. (My ambulance bill was about $800)

You may get separate bills from the anesthesiologist or surgeon. (My anesthesiologist bill was $1,700)

You may need follow-up appointments. (My orthopedic surgeon billed me for the appointments and his surgery together and it was about $1,000)

You’ve also got to pay for medical equipment you need afterward, like crutches or a walking boot. (Mine cost about $75)

Altogether, I ended up with almost $24,000 in medical debt from one car accident. That’s a really scary number for someone like me who makes $10/hr at a 12 hour a week job.

I got my debt down to $1075 by making some phone calls and submitting some paperwork.

The first thing I did was contact the hospital. They don’t make it easy to find, but many hospitals (perhaps most hospitals?) have financial assistance programs for people who can’t afford medical bills. I don’t make a lot of money, and I have bills to pay, so they were able to help me. I called the billing department and asked if they had any assistance programs for low income people who can’t pay their bills. I had to call multiple times, and I got transferred in circles by people who didn’t know what I was talking about. Finally, I got an appointment with someone in “Eligibility Services” (I don’t know what other hospitals call it, if it’s something different). I had to bring my pay stubs and copies of all of my bills. When I got to the hospital for the appointment, nobody knew what I was talking about so I had to wander a little to find where I needed to go. I spoke with the guy in Eligibility Services, and I waited for a decision on how much of the bill they would forgive. A month later, I got a call telling me it was totally forgiven.

I did the same thing for my ambulance bill and my anesthesiologist, but the process was a LOT easier. I just had to mail some paperwork and it was totally forgiven.

I didn’t bother with the medical equipment suppliers, since the bills came from separate companies and I didn’t feel like going through the process twice for $75. I was assured at the hospital that they had similar programs for debt forgiveness, so I could have probably avoided paying that too.

The only thing I couldn’t get taken care of was the surgeon/follow-up appointment cost, but they were able to put me on a no-interest payment plan.

Medical debt is scary because it’s something that can come from stuff that’s already really scary. I didn’t need the burden of $24,000 in debt on top of trying to get around on a crutch with a broken arm (it’s not easy, believe me!).. but I can’t imagine what it would be like with a bigger debt or a more severe medical emergency. I see lots of people in even worse trouble than I was in, both financially and medically. Please know that there are options for you when that GoFundMe doesn’t do enough. Even if your income is higher than mine, it’s worth a shot even for partial debt forgiveness.

I had to do this once as well and I can ABSOLUTELY confirm that this is true.

Get in contact with the hospital. Don’t just…sit there and let the anxiety grow and panic and then ignore it in an effort to find peace.

An Open Letter to Tumblr about the Adult Content Ban and How it is Hurting Your Users:

Recently, Tumblr was removed from the Apple app store due to an incident involving child pornography. This incident is incredibly unfortunate, but it doesn’t stand alone. Tumblr was also removed from the app store due to the large influx of porn bots and pornographic spam, users claiming to be proud to be pedophiles, blatant Nazism, racists who are not deleted for sending hate and harassing users, and more. I myself reported someone for harassing me, but because I had blocked the person and couldn’t access the messages where they harassed me, they were still able to send me anonymous asks. Your support staff, with back doors to the website (presumably), claimed they could not access the messages, and I was left SOL. Many features on this website do nothing to actually protect your users from harassment, racism, homophobia, transphobia, Nazis, pedophiles, predators, porn bots, and more.

You claim in your statement to us that you “have been working on these problems for a long time”. This is blatantly untrue. Please do not lie to us and patronize us. We’ve been here. We’ve seen you do nothing over, and over, and over again.

We complained to you for months and months about the rampant porn bots, and you did nothing except add a report button on mobile which only reported sensitive content or spam at best. You could have addressed this problem with an effective algorithm, but you did not. We complained to you about being harassed and sent hate speech for being LGBT+, and you did nothing. We complained to you about blogs being randomly deleted, and sometimes you’ve restored them, other times you have not. We complained to you that there were people proudly claiming to be “Minor Attracted Persons”, or pedophiles, and you did nothing. We complained to you about people proudly claiming to be white supremacists, and you did nothing. All of these things are “against the community guidelines”, and yet over and over, you have not found effective ways to handle these problems or suppress the feeling of welcome that these users claim to get here. You have had a long time to work on these problems, but you haven’t addressed them. To say you have is untrue.

Multiple other social networking websites, such as Wordpress, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and others have effectively dealt with rampant pornography, racism, pedophilia, and other problems without causing massive issues for their users who are not misusing the platform. They are continuing to find new, effective ways to deal with these issues without causing problems for their userbase as a whole.  There is no reason that you are unable to do this effectively other than that you wanted to do it quickly. You have once again chosen your stock holders over your users. And we have had enough.

You have already started to ban “Adult” content with a new algorithm. Here are screenshots of just a fraction of the posts you have flagged as containing adult content:

Your new system of simply tackling everything at once is not working. At all. And each of these screenshots is proof of your utter incompetence. None of these posts contain pornographic acts, “female nipples”, or any community violation of any kind.

We, the users, have been asking you for months to deal with these problems - particularly, the porn bots and bots that spam. In order to block a bot from a side blog, I have to do it manually, even though they are in my side blog’s feed. This is a huge issue for mobile - only users. They keep cropping up in droves, taking over our posts and tricking google into making it look like a legitimate blog linked to a pornographic website. We have complained to you for months and months now, and your solution to simply “ban all adult content” is ineffective. I agree that children should not be able to access pornography - but this is not how you tackle a porn bot problem. Your system is utterly useless, allows for racists, pedophiles, porn bots, and Nazis to remain untouched. It also harms sex workers and real people who may use this website for some forms of adult content responsibly. Moreover, as seen above, it harms plenty of users who have in no way violated your terms of service.

If you keep this up, you threaten your website and company as a whole. Many of us are backing up our blogs and planning places to go to.

You already have a content filter for “sensitive” content (content inappropriate for younger viewers). You could have improved this, instead of attacking your entire user base. It seems to be a very lazy “solution”, if you could call it one at all, and one that harms your entire userbase.

If you are going to keep this filter in place and make Tumblr, a website that has never been known for being family friendly and has never claimed to be, you are going to lose millions of your users. We are already planning our exodus. It isn’t hard to follow. Censor us, and we will go somewhere else. That is not a threat. It is a promise.

Sincerely,

The users of your website.

They flagged this post immediately and I’ve submitted it for review… this is… quite a week.

If you believe these words, reblog it, please. I want this to be right in their face because I couldn’t email them directly.
