The TAZ fandom: But Merle should hate Kravitz for causing him to lose an arm

Merle: Hah, I like that guy

Merle, having just learned he was forced to forget 100+ years of his life by someone he considered a friend: WHOA hey guys, don’t overreact, anyway can I hug Lucretia or would that be weird

Merle “incapable of holding a grudge” Highchurch, greeting the personification of nihilism who is hell-bent on destroying all of reality and who has personally killed him 50+ times: Oh hey buddy watcha up to

Merle taking to an innocent 10 year old boy detective:

the mcelroys look like the least compatible people in the world based on just their appearances alone and it’s the funniest fucking thing to me

like, who knew that some elusive cool uncle who’s probably a trickster god sporting a hawaiian shirt, a goth cowboy who just stepped from a starbucks and is probably keeping the secrets of magic from the public, and an assistant regional manager for Staples who only owns clothes in beige are a) related and b) rule the Internet as reigning funnymen with a less-than-benevolent fist

justin mcelroy has only two modes:

1) incapable of executing a bit without giggling

2) gets started on a bit and just… doesn’t stop. he just keeps on going and going as if it’s the only thing happening in his brain, in the style of the infamous amélie bit

I think I’ve been unfair to fahc Ryan. I keep saying he’d terrorize the city if put in charge of the Fake AH Crew for the day. When we all know, in actuality, he’d lose control of the lads within the first hour and mostly follow them around all day like a tired father taking his kids to a toy store.

the level of chaotic gay energy the McElroys are able to accurately convey in their queer characters despite being straight cisgender men is… genuinely astonishing and really should raise the bar for literally all other straight creators tbqh

like they really hit a commendable sweet spot of “I understand the gravity of representsting marginalized identities that are not my own” and “this is just another character” that really Works for me as a queer listener? because there is that sensitivity and making sure that identities are explicitly stated and treated with respect, while recognizing that it’s not really their place to tell a story About being queer. Griffin, Justin, and Travis all make clear that Lup, Taako, and Aubrey’s hardships do NOT stem from their identities, and it’s so refreshing because 1.) I don’t need background homo/transphobia in my fantasy, thanks and 2.) I especially don’t need those issues being used as plot pieces by straight dudes, thanks.

and that’s just like… never the case. it’s always “oh, she’s trans, and also the biggest badass in this game.” “yeah, he’s gay and dating the grim reaper, but also he’s about to turn into a t. rex so buckle up.” “she’s bi but more importantly she’s about to set a lot of things on fire.” it’s like… literally what I as a queer consumer want to see in my genre and the McElroys deliver like it’s no big.

here’s what I, a person who has not listen to taz but does have a busy dashboard, think that taz is about:

a gay wizard named taco, the party tank who has a vehicle proficiency probably, and merle (and im gonna be honest I have fuckall idea what merle’s class is. carries a weird dollar store bible??? fucks plants???) are An Adventurers. they immediately blow up a town and maybe are hired by lucretia, who seemed evil but turned out to not be and has a journal, to find some kind of Quest Object that can, I think, alter time or memories or something, and looks like a jellyfish. they buy gear from apparently literally garfield the cat who runs a fucking costco, jesus christ griffin. that kid from the detective conan anime is a character and so is kravitz, about whom I know three things: he’s death somehow, he’s dating the taco man, and every single fanart of him is hot. there are some sad crime lesbians who turn into a tree and some not sad lesbians named carey and killian but i dont know what they do??? I love lup although I barely know who she is i just know i love her and greg owes her money. everyone’s real sad about an umbrella, they all live on the moon except for when they dont, and maybe they’re all from off-brand NASA and are aliens???? and somehow, tom bodett

Having my Once Every Few Months Get Really Mad About Nick Robinson again. Was looking through old liked videos on YouTube, and got to the Car Boys ending, the analysis of it and the fan animations music videos. I wish so badly I could just enjoy it without feeling bad. Car Boys meant something to me in a way that no other McElroy series has. It’s comforting take on existential dread was unlike anything else I’ve ever experienced, and it really helped me a ton in getting over the way taking an existentialism philosophy class kinda fucked me up mentally for a while a few months before watching the series. It was the only thing that ever really made me feel like the universe being a chaotic mess and nothing really having any purpose was ok, because it made the universe seem beautiful in its horrifying randomness, and you knew you knew no matter how scary it got, you had a friend by your side to explore it with you, but it turns out maybe that friend’s an asshole, and maybe if you were wrong about that, you were wrong about everything else too, and the universe really is just a horrible unknowable thing. I know so much of Car Boys was Griffin, and that he’s still good, and that he was the positive, happy, optimistic, one in the pair, and that he was where the source of the existential comfort side of things, but maybe he was wrong. To try and end this on a more positive note, I’ll admit that what happened in Car Boys haven’t stopped Griffin from telling that kind of story. The ending to The Adventure Zone was all about positivity and love winning over an an incomprehensible abomination, and that there’s still comfort to be found in Griffin’s other works, but I just really wish I had Car Boys back
