It surprised everyone - Isak included - when Isak actually got into the Christmas spirit with Even this year. Last year they had been tentatively feeling out their relationship after Even’s episode ended, so Christmas hadn’t really been on either of their minds, but this year?

This year they were living in their own place - which they had successfully kept for over half a year now thank you very much - and they knew without a shadow of a doubt that they were better together than they could ever be apart, although they had both grown a lot over the year as individuals.

When Even had brought up decorating their flat at the end of November Isak had initially been wary. They didn’t exactly have space for a tree, nor did they have a lot of spare cash to make Christmas much of an affair, but Even really wanted their flat to show some festivity and Isak agreed on the condition that it wasn’t going to interfere with their ability to actually live in their flat.

Even - and the boys in the group chat - had silently braced themselves for a lot of bitching from Isak on the day in the middle of December that the pair had sets aside for decorating.

Bitching that never came.

Instead they got a picture of Even and Isak with a long piece of multicoloured tinsel draped over their shoulders, the two of them leaning into each other and laughing, and a caption that simply said “decorating is going well”. Not long after that came a picture of their front door with mistletoe dangling innocently from the doorframe, which Isak captioned with just a winking face. (All the boys had replied to that photo with something along the lines of “well I ain’t kissing you when I visit!”, which made Even and Isak laugh aloud.)

In the end they didn’t need a lot of decoration - which was good, considering the space they had to work with - but they were happy with what they had. They draped multicoloured tinsel over the window frames in the lounge and in the kitchen, placed mistletoe over every doorway and over their bed (they were young and in love, alright, sue them), and pride of place on their little table was a little tinsel tree all the colours of the rainbow.

When they curled up in bed together that night - after exchanging countless soft kisses under the mistletoe - Even admitted that he was surprised by how happy Isak had seemed decorating the flat when Isak had been really digging his heels about Christmas since people had started mentioning it after Halloween.

“Christmas was always weird at home. Especially when mum started getting really obsessive. I guess that’s just the feeling I associate with Christmas; feeling uncomfortable and stressed and just like shit I guess.” Isak shrugged.

“I feel like there’s a but coming?” Even really bloody hoped there was.

“But,” Isak nodded, taking a breath. “I realised that this is our home. This is our first proper Christmas together. This is when we get to make our own traditions and decide how we want to celebrate as our own little family, separate from our parents.” Isak was fiddling with their duvet, a nervous tell, and Even held his boy impossibly closer.

“I love you so much, you know that?” Even was honest to god choked up by Isak’s little speech. He hadn’t realised it was possible to contain so much love for someone until he got to know Isak.

“I love you too. And hopefully we’ll love whatever traditions we make.” Isak smiled into the curve of Even’s neck.

“I think the mistletoe over the bed should be a year round tradition, to be honest.” Even said seriously, grinning when he felt the surprised laugh from Isak against his neck.

“You get plenty of kisses in this bed without the mistletoe, I think we’ll be fine.” Even could hear Isak rolling his eyes.

“There could always be more kisses though.” Even pointed out. When Isak tipped his head back - most likely so he could look Even in the face and tell him to shut up - Even immediately pressed their lips together in a soft chaste kiss.

“See.”

i’m so glad the “isak and even opening their door in matching outfits” was as awkward to film as it was to watch in the show ajekdjkahdjwm
