The FCC will soon vote to kill net neutrality. But Congress can stop them if they hear from constituents now.

Yesterday afternoon the House subcommittee that provides Congressional oversight for the FCC held an important hearing about the agency’s current plans, including current Chairman (and former Verizon lawyer) Ajit Pai’s move to gut Title II net neutrality protections that prevent ISPs from controlling what we do online with throttling, censorship, and extra fees.

With Capitol Hill’s attention now on the FCC, and Pai’s final plan to gut net neutrality protections expected in the coming weeks, it’s extra important that Congress gets flooded with phone calls from Internet users telling them to stand up and defend the open Internet.

We’re also hearing there are key members of Congress considering whether to step in and force Pai to slow down. This means best chance to stop the FCC from breaking the fundamental principle that makes the Internet awesome is to pound Congress with phone calls right now.

You can call your reps easily with just one click here: battleforthenet.com

You’ll see a script on your screen, or you can say something like this:

“I support Title Two net neutrality rules and I urge you to oppose the FCC’s plan to repeal them. Specifically, I’d like you to contact the FCC Chairman and demand he abandon his current plan.”

You can also just call this number directly and enter your zipcode to get connected to your legislators: 202-930-8550.

If you run a website, blog, tumblr, or forum, help spread the word by putting up a sticky post, or use one of these widgets, ads, or banners: https://www.battleforthenet.com/#join

Ajit Pai is expected to circulate the text of his rule killing net neutrality on November 22, the day before Thanksgiving. Once that happens, it will move to a vote at the FCC’s open meeting in December, and it will become much much harder to stop him.

It’s clear that the FCC remains set on killing net neutrality. But Congress can stop the FCC from gutting the rules that keep the web open, affordable, and awesome.

@takashi0 Please help, this doesn’t have enough notes.

This post is me acknowelging that some people go onto tumblr to escape the real world and to soothe themselves after stressful experiences, so if they block or ignore social justice and news stories so that their decompression isn’t interrupted with yet more stress, it is not only no one’s business but it makes perfect sense.

Never judge people for not reblogging something.

SU AU: On the Planet Earth

Peridot had been watching Moonstone intently, even daring to take a step closer to the frightened gem, but when Moonstone looked at her with intense eyes, Peridot stepped back as if the other gem had slapped her.
“I–!” she stopped short, choosing her next words carefully.  Moonstones had telepathic abilities, but this one seemed to be damaged and on the verge of corruption, so there was a chance that she wouldn’t notice if she was being lied to.  However, it was extremely risky.  Peridot decided that telling the truth in a deceptive light was a better idea than an outright outlandish lie that she couldn’t even convince herself of.  “…I don’t know many details,” she began with a truth, “But I do know that the war was won.  There were heavy casualties, but I can help you try to find your comrades.  B-but,” she dared to take another step closer to the distressed gem, again reaching out her finger units cautiously, “I can’t help you if you’re corrupted.  You–you look–y-you seem to be on the verge of corruption.”  Peridot’s eyes darted around, taking in every detail of their surroundings and calculating things that could possibly be of help.  Looking at the cliffs surrounding them, Peridot couldn’t help but think that if she needed to, she could cause a rockslide with the weapon on her limb enhancers to either destroy the physical form of this Moonstone, or shatter her if need be.  But that was a last resort, and not something that she wanted to do–not when this was the only gem within lightyears of her.  Well, other than the incubating cluster…
Shoving the thought of the cluster aside, she continued to look around.  There was a deep groove in one of the cliff faces as if there was once a waterfall there.  However, from the growth of trees and evidence of small rockslides indicated that water hadn’t flowed there for thousands of years.  Following the path with her eyes, she saw that the water once fell into a sort of basin, which then poured itself into the fountain and from there flowed out of the fountain and into a stream that ran down the gully.  But besides this, perhaps the most useful piece of information was the ruins of what used to be a large pink rhombus in the middle of the fountain–they symbol of Pink Daimond.
“I–I think…” Peridot said carefully, “Do you rememb– No, never mind, don’t think about it.  I think that this fountain used to poses healing properties when it was running.  Pink D– No, never mind, don’t think about that either.”  She took a deep breath and tried to focus her thoughts.  “Listen, what’s important is that I think that if we can get the water running in this fountain again, it will help you.” Her slanted brows furrowed, she hoped that her babbling wasn’t confusing or stressing out Moonstone, who was clearly already under way too much stress already, “Can you control water…?” she asked hesitantly.
@ixbreakxthings

Moonstone was hardly paying attention to Peridot at first, still obsessed with trying to suck out any information she could from the ground with her hands, becoming ever more frantic as the multitudes of emotions and pain spoke back to her.  Nothing that made much sense, nothing that clarified what had happened, just that it had been terrible.  In her condition, and so overwhelmed by these latent energies, she would not have known if Peridot were lying to her at least not at first.  Though what the other gem said about the result of the war struck Moonstone as nothing but the truth, and simply confirming what the earth itself was trying to tell her.  The streaks on her skin pulsed and gave off alternating blue and white colors as she stared at Peridot with her hand over her veiled mouth, her eyes spilling over with tears.  She was just assuming this, but from what the earth told her and the way Peridot delivered the news, she assumed that the winners of this war were not on her Diamond’s side.  She immediately thought of all the countless lives that must have been lost or destroyed, on both sides.  She realized she had been left behind...if the rebellion had been squashed, she would have been back home by now.  The pain and conflict she felt from her surroundings felt so immediate and vivid, it didn’t even occur to her that that war had ended so, so long ago.

She could not process all this, the corruption being partly to blame for her struggle. Thoughts piled up onto themselves like layers, with static in between each one.  She was drowning in information she could not parse; at least her mind was able to kick in a sort of fail safe for just such times: she shoved much of these thoughts into the back of her mind, to consider later.  She could not quite put it all away, and could not get Blue’s face out of her mind or the fear that she had somehow failed her, but was at least able to calm down and be able to hear Peridot.  She could not stop crying, though; at least hers was a soft, gentle cry that didn’t interfere with her listening.

She clutched herself by the shoulders and looked down when Peridot suggested she was corrupted, refusing to believe it, though she knew something was wrong.  Cracked, perhaps, or sick from being in stasis for so long, something, anything but that!  She could see the streaks on her skin, glowing angrily in response to her inner turmoil, but just did not want to accept it.  It would mean not being able to return home if true, unless she could be healed.  But she’d never heard of a corrupted gem being healed, not fully...

Of course she immediately thought of the things Peridot told her not to think about; now Pink Diamond was vivid and alive in her mind, and her tears gushed anew at the old grief of her mistress.  Just another batch of feelings to mercilessly stamp down for her own sanity.  “Water?” she asked, as if she had forgotten what that even was.  She gnashed her teeth and began beating her head with the heel of her hand, because she knew she had some memories of this she couldn't quite access.  She could see snatches of memories of herself manipulating water...but how?  She was able to project herself, in her mind, into one of these memories to try to figure out what she was doing.  She whined bitterly because Blue was there in her memory, and she could feel--was almost lost in--the Diamond’s carefully watching gaze as she was waist deep in clear, cool water.  The water was not moving, did not even ripple around her body as it would any other interfering substance somehow.  She felt her body grow cold very quickly and a vice like grip squeeze around her hips--the water was freezing in her memory.  By her hand somehow.  However the feeling was so vivid she screamed in panic and pain, forgetting for a moment that this was just a memory and not reality.  Quickly scrambling to recover her senses so she could answer Peridot, she practical shouted, “Ice!  I-I-I can freeze it...I think...and...and heat it as well.”  She shot her tear stained eyes up at the other gem.  “At least....at least I could.  Before.”

notes on Moonstone!Nereth before I forget:

- was a legal adviser to Blue Diamond, reported directly to her

- spent her days studying old cases and the more dense legal theories written by the Zircons; would write long essays in response

- dissents were her favorite to write, though she never held any bad feelings towards whomever she was disagreeing with and did not think her dissents were taken that seriously anyway

- is happy to remain in one place for a long time as long as she has plenty to read and can at least contact someone when she is ready to emerge

- loved her Diamond and considered herself lucky for every second spent with her; though she would never approach Blue or seek her out unless she had something important to share

- though very intelligent and creative in her thoughts, able to think outside the box, she tended to side with Blue on literally anything.  Even if Blue changed her mind without explanation

- when the Crystal Gems rebelled, she spent the equivalent of Earth months sobbing in her archives, heartbroken about what she considered to be a betrayal on their part

- only went to Earth at the command of Blue to investigate the situation and come back with notes

- was bubbled by one of the Crystal Gems by accident (still not 100% this is what happened, still working out the details)

- is a powerful touch-telepath, able to read almost directly whatever thoughts/feelings are forefront in the other person’s mind; is able to sense thoughts without touching if the person is within 8 feet or so and is not blocked by interfering energy

- cannot sense thoughts beyond what is forefront in the mind, however.  only herself and Blue know this, otherwise others could easily take advantage and just forcefully think a certain thought to confuse her if she tries to read them

- has been used to extract information from gems at Blue’s request, usually resulting in those gems getting punished; Moonstone feels bad for this but justifies to herself that it was for Blue’s sake

- her veil helps keep her protected from psychic energy; if she is able to sense another’s thoughts, she will.  it comes in whether or not she wants it and while able to push the thoughts out, it can take a lot of energy.  Though small and almost sheer, the veil projects a shield around her; she can sense the existence of energy around her with it and can identify its type and strength, but can’t know exactly what it is without taking the veil off; can’t read thoughts with the veil even if touching the subject

- would never wear it around Blue even though she would feel extremely sad and low around her and would cry when she did; over the millennia she has in a way become addicted to Blue’s misery because it was familiar and she felt a strange comfort in “sharing” this pain with her.  the sadness made her feel connected to her.  Blue would not expect Moonstone to try to cheer her up, but to respect her feelings and just be present with her.

- while sadness/depressive feelings are almost comforting to her, anger and aggression is very unpleasant and scary for her.  She would almost always wear her veil around aggressive and/or extroverted gems

- is fairly lawful good; tends to respect laws that are in place and not question them, assuming that whoever made them was correct to do so

- however she sympathizes with those who are victimized

- has only heard about fusing from the Diamonds -- she is curious about it but associates it with the Crystal Gems and therefore is nervous/suspicious about it

- her gem is corrupted (still haven’t figured out how/why, probably happened when she was bubbled and she has been in stasis all this time) still working out in what ways this affects her but one consequence to this is that it’s much harder to push out the thoughts of others she doesn’t want without her veil. reading thoughts is harder because there is an extra layer of the equivalent of static mixed in with the thoughts; will take her some time to learn how to read through that. the corruption makes her more sensitive than usual to other forms of energy, like electromagnetic, which is painful/harmful at first until she retrains herself to absorb it safely.  could possibly even use that same energy once its absorbed; if she were a more aggressive type she’d think to use it as a weapon

I feel like Sisko would be like REALLY into Halloween. He’d be the guy all the kids on the ship know they can come to for homemade hot chocolate and cookies. He’d deck out his and Jennifer’s quarters with strung lights, silly paper ghosts, and carved pumpkins he always subtly suggests the botanists should grow a patch of each year. And when Jake comes but is too old to start picking his own costume Sisko is excitedly thinking about it for weeks leading up to it.

By this point on Earth Halloween has faded some in popularity, but their commander’s infectious excitement over it gets not only the humans, but crewmembers from other species to get wholly involved.

Ds9 would be a great place to trick or treat. It’s easy to knock on 100 doors. Though lissepian candy is probably gross and you shouldn’t leave it with the other candy ‘cause it might eat it.

I’m proposing a fanfic prompt fill.  Trick-Or-Treating on DS9.

It’s gotta be done.

Post them on Halloween, obviously.
