okay nvm i actually found the post that caused the discourse and that person spilled🤭 i've always felt v disconnected to fics that are explicitly tagged as black reader for that reason. a lot of the times they end up falling into a v specific personality and aesthetic i don't relate to at all. and then they also write the characters a particular way like im sorry i don't wanna read toji using aave that is a japanese man! they do the same w eren too like sister he's german why are u writing him w that type of dialogue 😭 like no shade to each their own but i find it better to follow black writers that don't tag their fics as black reader but make it clear it's a black woman centered acct if that makes sense. they usually only mention things more subtlety like dark nipples/ areolas and curls/coils or protective hairstyles. and black women are used in the mood boards. i prefer that kind of fic where u can tell the author keeps other skin tones in mind and isn't saying shit like "your cheeks turned crimson red".

i get where that other anon was coming from in that you should give people chances and that like yes no one is going to be a great writer out the gate, nor does being a fanfic author make you a "real" author, you know? they aren't being paid for their work and its a hobby. BUT there is something to be said i think in the general state of fanfiction currently. i see it on tumblr as well as ao3. i use ao3 for like novel length fics and i used to genuinely find great like professional level fics that were completed and up to 100k words easily within all my various fandoms i am in. nowadays im lucky if i find a 50k piece of work that is not equivalent to some of the shit i mightve written in 5th grade. on tumblr x reader fics rarely are anything more than a badly written piece of porn with no plot. and theres nothing inherently wrong with with some smut and zero plot but why is it reading like the author is 15 at best? but if you get on tiktok and are deep enough in the fanfiction culture this type of shit is all thats being talked about! and people eat it up every time!
i would like to believe that hey maybe it's just my age, maybe fanfiction has always been that bad but i go to some of these authors pages and they are the same age or sometimes older than me. not only that but, i've always read "bad" fan fiction for the hell of it but these days it's not just bad, it's literally unreadable.
overall i just think the state of our media literacy is in HELL these days and it's beginning to show more and more in so many areas of media, including fanfiction.
sorry for the rant, i just think you are very correct and i know theres a lot of feelings around criticizing and critiquing fanfiction but i just feel like people are a little to eager these days to let shit be bad for the sake of a click.

Nobody starts out writing like a world renowned author the first time they write and I’ve been reading on tumblr for 4+ years and let me tell you there had always been a fair share of horrific writing. (and fanfiction has always been catered to teenagers, teens are not the best writer haha. They’re just horny and looking for a hobby.)
I definitely see where you’re coming from!! which is also why I put a bit of emphasis on it should definitely be fun for people first and foremost— like a hobby of sorts! I’ve also been reading and writing on tumblr for 4+ years and it’s definitely a fact that everyone has to start somewhere. humble beginnings!
however, I don’t give leeway to blatantly lackluster content for the sake of getting notes. It’s different when you see an effort (and it doesn’t necessarily have to be a masterpiece! seeing an author really enthusiastic about something they put a real effort into makes me so happy) vs. seeing something.. lazily put together for traction. it goes hand in hand with no one reblogging and interacting with fics anymore.
I also think that fanfiction has always catered heavily to adult audiences too!! its just a matter of what side you’re on and what content you’re seeking. I’m turning 25 soon so my tastes have been a little more refined I think! I think that age doesn’t always equate to skill all the time although age does help JSJSJSJSJAJAJ
