My rec this Fresh Meat Friday is for a fic that currently only has 65 hits, which is clearly a problem. This is a new author to the fandom who needs more love! A series of scenes from the end of season two and a different choice made. The author has a beautiful touch with description and metaphor, and aces their dialogue. Hannibal Lecter is not a quiet Sunday morning hidden within two storeys, four walls and a herb garden that makes the Giardino Delle Erbe wilt in shame. He is Death on two legs, he takes away the gentle breeze, and he kisses Will like it’s the only thing that matters. There are a few typos and grammatical errors in the story that I could wish had been beta’d out of it, but not enough to detract from the beautiful, building atmosphere of the piece. Once again, I don’t know if the author’s on tumblr to tag them.

This is my rec for Fresh Meat Friday, and I’ve been waiting months for the chance to promote it! This was darlingred1’s first fic for the Hannibal fandom (they’ve since written one more) and it’s fabulous. It’s a perfect example of a kink fic where the kink is used to really explore the characters and their relationship. Hannibal and Will are circling after the Fall, trying to figure out how this thing even works; they’re bitter and hurting and everything is a potential weapon, to be picked up or set aside with the changing of moods. And that includes Will’s choice of sex aids. “I always plan for an array of possible outcomes,” Hannibal says, still diligently sketching away. “It’s easier that way to adapt when circumstances change suddenly.” “So, what, you thought, ‘Just in case I decide to keep him around, I better make sure he has his butt plugs’?” Will’s cheeks burn, and he would regret the blunt phrasing except that Hannibal is visibly taken aback by it. He thinks it will never fail to thrill him when Hannibal is so surprised by him that he drops the veil, no matter how briefly. After a beat of silence, Hannibal lays his pencil on the desk and slides his drawing to the side. “You are embarrassed that I found them. You needn’t be. There is nothing shameful about deriving sexual pleasure from anal stimulation, Will.” Will flinches away, ripping one hand out of his pocket to rub his eyes. He would have been happy to go his whole damn life without hearing the words anal stimulation coming out of Hannibal’s mouth. The effect it has on him is almost obscene. “You would think,” he says, still refusing to meet Hannibal’s gaze, “I’d get used to being violated by you, but somehow every infraction just feels worse than the last.” 20,000 words of spot-on characterisation, dark and lightly humorous and loving. I am so excited for the return of @freshmeatfriday. It is such a wonderful resource for the fandom that I am constantly referring to for those hidden gems.

This month I am honored to rec a Spacedogs story by @stratumgermanitivum I dare you to read this story and not smile. I triple dog dare you! 

In this story Nigel decides that the best way to win Adam’s affections is to bestow on him beautiful and thematic (Space!) gifts…or so he thinks. The only problem is, Nigel is really bad at this. Really, really bad. As the story progresses you can’t help but marvel at Nigel’s horrible taste. This story is such a Nigel showcase. We all know that he’s violent and foul mouthed but he’s also hopelessly smitten with Adam. It’s that contrast that makes him so appealing when paired with Adam. Spacedogs is the pairing I always turn to when I need a pick me up and this story a prime example of what gifted writers can craft they decide to play in the Spacedogs sandbox. 

And before you ask, yes the author does provide visual aids. :-)

In this fandom, we do appreciate word play. We all know how difficult it is to deliver a decent pun, especially in a language which is not even your own like in  Hannibal’s case. But it’s part of his character to just hint at something horrible of his doing in front of a delicious dish.

The author of A Prime Cut does something similar, defying expectations and leading us to Hannibal’s table for one last unorthodox meal, which Will enjoys without murder getting involved, for once. Short and funny, because I can’t always rec dark and sophisticated works ( ･౪･) for @freshmeatfriday and their lovely initiative.
