state of the system, edit 2024/9/04

There's been a LOT of additions to the system, over the past few months! A mix of stress, and developments in our comfort being ourselves due to internal work.

2024 really seems to be the Year of the Fictive for us. Welcome, Harley and Scarlet!

@autobots-one-half: the Wreckers subsystem: Arcee¹, Concord, Hammerdown, Horsepower, and Mayday

@chateau-maupertuis: Fenix, Sienna, Rey (short for Reynartine), any pronouns. Pansexual fox of many names.

@hebephage: Ran, she/her bisexual kijin, fictive² median subsystem.

@luckyno13: Sophie/Sophia, she/her small anthro cat. First fronted completely by surprise on April 6, 2024.

@responsiblyirresponsible: Justine Wakely Tylor, she/her. Trans woman fictive, sexuality is a noncommittal hand-wave. First turned up in headspace a while after Aidel, but only recently started fronting for more than a few minutes.

¹: I turned up 8/15/2023! I was around in the background of headspace for a while but nobody was sure who I was until I pushed to front.

² Ran has been hiding in-system for a while (we're not entirely sure how long), but only actually fronted for the first time on 9/9/23

*: Kerys didn't have a surname, so it asked its husband Haskell for his. This caused Haskell to briefly bluescreen, it was cute as fuck.

**: Fuck yeah! That's me, I'm not new but the realization that I'm my own damn person is.

***: Aidel is a fictive but felt anxious about using the name she had in her source media since this body is of European/Mediterranean Jewish ancestry and she's from an anime/manga/LN franchise. She showed up completely unexpectedly on December 2, 2022.

I cannot get over this. They have a fucking Adolf Eichmann.

For those of you who don't know his whole deal, Adolf Eichmann was the primary bureaucrat/administrator behind the Holocaust. Overseeing supply chains, ensuring rail infrastructure was in place, collecting lists of Jews, etc.

He fled to Argentina after the war and, after a complex series of events, was found in the late 50s. The Mossad carried out an illegal extradition (which the Argentine government was, by all accounts, aware of and cool with), brought him to Jerusalem, put him on trial (you know, Hannah Arendt's whole thing, and the setting of my profile pic of Zivia) and he was hanged on June 1, 1962.

this... disturbs me way more than just donald trump. trump in power without logistics is just a talking head making threats. none of the large-scale evil in the world would be possible if it were just one guy at a time doing stuff.

evil needs people who will comply, but more than that, it needs people who will plan, and manage, and structure things. to keep timetables and ledgers. they need a whole chain of people who want to make these evil things happen.

so. todd lyons. may he accomplish nothing and make no name for himself.

keep each other safe. don't talk to ICE.

I'm sorry I'm going fucking insane over trans people in sports issues the anti trans crowd has lost the fucking plot and then has the audacity to act like its the trannies who are ridiculous

I used to be of the "well the sports issue isn't really important to me its w/e I just don't want it to be a gateway into other transphobia" but oh my fucking god we are so far gone. The fencing shit is sending me over the edge. What the fuck.

I can't even articulate my words so I'm just going to tell a story in screenshots

I am so fucking tired of being gaslit about this

I'm also still so fucking pissed that we have to include "ooo the trans fencer only finished in X place" because its a reminder that trans women will never be allowed to excel at anything in the public eye without being cut down. Fuck OFF

Daily reminder: Transphobia actively contributes to sexism. If you don’t fit the beauty standard and are seen as masculine in any way shape or form, you are seen as transgender and as a “problem”

I think it's incredibly important here to not overlook the fact that she is a Black woman. Transphobia, racism, and sexism overlap significantly because of the incredibly eurocentric beauty standards women are judged on.

You’ve got to understand that this was 2014. I’ve seen some younger lesbian, bi, and queer folks today going, “So what? They held hands. They didn’t even kiss.” Or people watching it for the first time, saying, “I don’t see what the big deal is. There wasn’t any build-up!”

But the landscape of children’s TV was very different six years ago. Like, that moment when they looked into each other’s eyes in a beam of golden light was revolutionary. I was living in a house with other queer people and we ALL screamed and cried, just like this.

Korrasami paved the way for Steven Universe and She-Ra to do what they did in the following years. And, yes, those were leaps forward whereas this was a step. But I saw it on another post, and I’ll echo the sentiment: Korrasami walked so Catradora could sprint.

Same-sex marriage wasn’t legal in the US in 2014.

Not until 2016. Before that, the marriage was only recognized in a few states.

It might not seem like much now, but HOLY FUCK this moment in the finale was huge in 2014.

The first norm-penetrating precedent rarely looks like some great achievement or change. It looks like a small violation of an established norm, radical only in how public it is. Sometimes you use tameness to buy the publicity needed to make progress.

Yo. I was born in 1988.

My canon queer couple?

WAS TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH AS COUSINS.

Cloverway gave one of them an offscreen boyfriend and, any time an uncuttable kissy scene came up, they started calling each other “cuz.” Another queer couple from the same show suffered the fate of being heterocized by one of them literally being genderswapped.

(Guess who became the girl. Go on, guess. At least it’s not as bad as France, where they became … brothers.)

That was my mainstream queer rep.

Oh. Until this came out.

… . yeah.

I’m not even in Avatar fandom and when those first gifs popped up on my dash, I started crying. I was 24 years old and crying over a show I had never watched because a pair of women held hands.

You can’t possibly understand what it was like before that.

You don’t want to understand what it was like before that.

I don’t want you to understand what it was like before that.

But there’s a reason we reacted like this.

I pray you never have cause to learn it yourselves.

I do actually want y'all to know and understand what it was like before that because some of the hot takes coming out of younger community members make it staggeringly obvious you know nothing about our history.

Like, I don’t want you to experience it, but I really am going to need y'all to move into Formal Operational Cognitive Development and start considering that yours isn’t the only perspective and that things have changed drastically for queer people WITHIN MY LIFETIME and I am a relatively young queer who was born AFTER like ¾ of our population died of AIDS and we lost nearly an entire generation along with all their history.

what "no sugar added" should mean: the natural sugars of the other ingredients like fruit are the only source of sweetness in this product

what is actually means: we added a fuckton of artificial sweeteners

i see we are all angry about this

Its come to my attention that a lot of people do not know how to deal with a hot car in summer. A lot of people will get back to their car, after hours of it being parked in the full sun, and will open the door to be blasted in the face with furnace-level temperatures, and you'll just clamber in and shut the doors and leave the windows closed and you'll start driving that thing, and you'll wait for the air-conditioning to battle and overcome the heat.

Thats. Insane to me.

The inside of a car can get up to 40°C/104°F hotter than the outside temperature. Why would anyone get inside that????? It's gonna take your air-conditioning at least half an hour to combat that and bring the temperature down to something even remotely reasonable, and in the meantime you're sitting there risking heatstroke.

Now, I understand that it's currently winter in the northern hemisphere, which is where most of this site lives, but a) I'm in the southern hemisphere and today was Lots Of Degrees, and b) y'all should read this now and commit it to memory or queue it to reblog in summer or whatever, because it boggles my mind that some of you get into a car whose interior is literally oven-hot.

So!!!! Some tips!!!!!

  • Get a sun visor. One of the big ones that goes inside your windshield. You will not believe how much cooler those things keep your car. Get one, use it. Leave it to bounce around in your back-seat on cooler days, but have it on hand for the stinkers. They range in price but two-dollar stores usually have them for pretty cheap.
  • Leave the windows of your car cracked open. It doesn't have to be much. Literally just the tiniest amount will mean that the heat building inside your car has a way to escape, meaning the interior temp will naturally be kept lower. The larger the opening, the better, but depending on the neighbourhood you're parking in, maybe it would be better to have them open just a sliver. Even the tiniest crack will help. Ever tried warming up an oven with the door open? It doesn't work well. This is the same concept. If there is a way for the hot air to escape, the inside of your car will stay a lot cooler than it otherwise would have.
  • If you're fancy enough to have an openable sunroof (that's the dream) then leave that open a bit as well.
  • Youve just gotten back to your car and opened the door, and its hot as fuck in there. Open another door, ideally on the other side of the car, and let the hot air escape. If you can open all four doors and the boot, then thats even better. A bunch of the hot air will flush out. Not all!!! But a lot. Give it anywhere from a few moments to a few minutes, depending on how much of a hurry you're in.
  • Get in, start the car, open all the windows. Yes, even if you hate having the windows open.
  • Put the air-conditioning on full blast, and make sure the recycle is turned OFF. This means it pulls fresh air from outside the car (hot, but less hot than inside) and pumps that into the car, further displacing the heat inside the vehicle.
  • Start driving, still with the windows down. Once you get up enough speed, the force of the air from outside coming in will blast the rest of the excess heat out of the car.
  • The temp inside the car will now be roughly equivalent to the temp outside the car. Still hot!!!! But MAJORLY less so, and majority more handle-able by your air-conditioner.
  • Put all your windows up, and switch the air-con over to recycle. This means it takes the air in the car and cools it, then spits it back into the car, meaning that with each cycle, the air gets progressively cooler a lot faster.

If you do this, your car will be a hell of a lot more comfortable a hell of a lot sooner than it would be if you got into a 60°C/140°F cabin and just.... endured that, until your aircon could overcome it.

This post has been brought to you by an Australian who knows not one but TWO people who get into 60°C cars and wait 15 to 30 minutes for their car to drop back down to a temperature that's even REMOTELY tolerable.

Until like a month ago I lived in Phoenix, Arizona where it hit 99° before the end of March this year. Almost nobody cracked their windows. I've never understood why.

In contrast to prev I've lived somewhere in Az my whole life and all these were basic survival tips I got from others. Especially the year I had a car without any form of AC. 480 cooling; four windows down, go 80 mph.

Yeah, you still see people buttoned up in their little heat locker while driving, you just hope they aren't mad from Arizona Sickness and out to get you.

Reblogging for the next gen. Cool out that wheeled oven and don't fucking die!

So I thought this was commonly known internet navigation (but apparently it might just be those of us who have been using the internet since the 90’s who still know it). Or so it seems based on… a grumpy comment I got.

When you see an arrow like this:

It means you click it to expand out a hidden section.

It’s an accordion section/menu! It’s useful in web design to hide information that may be overwhelming under specific headers so people can only see what they need.

Here I’m using it for people who need the content warnings to be able to check, but for those who don’t need them and don’t want to be spoiled to just move right past without accidentally reading anything.

It’s still the user’s responsibility to click the arrow and read things as they need! But it is all warned. (And, yes, the all encompassing issues are already a tag on the fic, I’m just providing additonal warnings per chapter.)

Holy shit?? I didn’t know AO3 could do this. This is so useful!

Support for <details> was added about a year ago, and more people should definitely know about it!

Folks, backup your Tumblrs, for real this time

To be clear, I don't have any news about any impending doom. But I've heard a bit more about what's going on with staff after the layoff of last week, and there are even less people than I thought still working here.

I don't think even the current staff know what's going to happen, but honestly, I don't see how the high ups could even pretend to intend to keep this place open while virtually unstaffed.

And of course, if the most despicable thing happens, you can find me at @javi@goblin.band from any fediverse platform 🤷

for reference, OP is a former employee of Tumblr who tries to keep up to date with tumblr’s inner workings. please back your blogs up.

In your blog settings you have the ability to initiate a blog export, and this will generate a backup for your blog.

Fair warning though, if you've been on the platform for a long time this archive is likely to be quite hefty in file size. This blog I have had for 5 years with 22k posts, and the export from tumblr came to be 48GB. My previous blog I made in 2011 and has 95k posts, so needless to say I did not use tumblr's built in export to back that one up.

If you want more control over exactly what you back up from your blog, I recommend that you use tumblr-utils instead. It allows you to backup specific tags, post types, and to ignore posts that you did not create (reblogs where you've added a comment count as a post you created, to be clear).

To use it:

  1. download and install python 2.7
  2. download tumblr-utils
  3. create an application on tumblr to get an api key
  4. extract the tumblr-utils zip and open the tumblr_backup.py file in notepad
  5. search for "API" and paste in your OAuth consumer key
  6. then go back to the folder where you extracted tumblr-utils and choose open folder in terminal / command prompt, or type cmd.exe in the address bar while inside the folder

now in the window that opens it should show the current path, and you can type "py -2 .\tumblr_backup.py [your options] [your blog name]" and hit enter. Example:

Backing up just my original posts from this blog with this command came to 632MB rather than 48GB, and also gave me the option to save my posts in JSON format which will be useful for converting my posts to a new format for self hosting.

On that note I'm currently looking into figuring out a simple (and ideally free) way of self hosting a static site blog that utilises activitypub, and also converting my old posts to re-host on said blog.

This post series by maho.dev on implementing activitypub with any static site is my primary source of guidance atm if you also want to try figure that out yourself, as well as having an explanation for why you'd even want to do this if you don't already know

but if tumblr goes down before I get things sorted and write up a post about it then i'll be reporting back on it via my bsky, mastodon, and toyhouse accounts

if you dont have an account on any of these I'll also be sharing an update via my personal site's RSS feed, link of which includes an explanation of what RSS is and some feed readers you can use, I highly recommend checking it out as getting a feed reader is going to be the best way you can stay connected with people if they scatter across the internet!

tldr: download tumblr-utils to backup your blog more efficiently, introduce yourself to RSS and get a feed reader to stay connected with people, consider saving mine so you can find out how to self host your blog later if tumblr goes down

Image description: a picture of a person holding a KN95 mask. There is writing over the picture that says, "THERE'S NO EASIER WAY TO PROTECT YOUR HEALTH. Masks are compact, portable and cost a lot less than illness." There is a banner at the top of the image that says, "whn.global". End I.D.

I want you to remember:

The fascists hate you too and they just will pretend otherwise until after they've killed the rest of us, before they turn on you.

Thanks to whoever tried, but I knew they'd never allow it.

Let's do it the old fashioned way. Spread it far and wide.

Reminder: you can't be the whole wall against stopping fascism by yourself. Nobody can. But you damn sure can be a brick.

There's a lot of good comments and tags in the notes, but this one is very important, I feel like it deserves some emphasis.

Part of how authoritarianism works is telling you that you can't stop it. And you can't stop it by yourself. But it wants to stop the train of thought there and let you fall into despair.

You need to remember the next part: you don't have to stop it by yourself.

You're not alone. Take care of your community and let your community take care of you. Supporting each other is so vital.

When I was a kid, I went to a school where the head of special education was VIRULENTLY ableist.

I was a kid. I had no power over her. The other faculty spoke of her in hushed tones, whispering “she’s the one with the PhD” as if, once you have the super fancy holographic rare version of a diploma, no one can stop you from hurting kids.

I understood very quickly that I couldn’t get her fired. Believe me, I tried.

But I COULD get in the way.

So I did.

Make good trouble. Get in the way.

If they come for you, go knowing you spat in their eye.

A recent post breached containment so I think it's time for some rent lowering:

Trans children should have the right to undergo the correct puberty at the same time as their peers.

Puberty blockers were only ever a compromise and should not be seen as the end goal of trans advocacy.

you, yes You dear reader, should be wearing a mask in public in general, and especially if you are showing symptoms of any transmissible illness

quick linguistic history lesson. the term “woke” originates from african american communities to describe being “awake and aware” of the current sociopolitical climate. this term has been used since at least the 1930s. it wasnt until 2014 during the ferguson protests that the term entered the wider vernacular. mainly as a result of black twitter. and as is common with many things coined by the black community. it was repeated and commercialized to death to the point where now most people only using it mockingly. including people on the left. the point is. “woke” is not a bad word. the alt right wants it to be one.

i feel like the "egg prime directive" is based in the idea that realizing youre transgender is inherently traumatic, and not just forced to be so by the current state of the world. trying to make discussions of possibly being a different gender much more casual and accessible to the average cis & "cis" person by bringing it up as an option is in fact one of the easiest ways to counteract such systemic transphobia
