me, normal person in worm city (the city worm takes place in): sure its pretty sad that hero died and all but you have to admit that retiring his card basically fixed the prodecktorate meta by itself so calling it a tragedy is maybe a bit shortsighted

i must not get takeout. takeout is the wallet-killer. takeout is the little-death that brings total obliteration. i will face the kitchen, fridge, and pantry. i will make choices about what to cook and then execute them. when hunger is gone there will be nothing. only i will remain.

this is less a specific complaint about dnd than it is about a mindset that very obviously permeates dnd and other similar games, but it's really telling how much gm advice is based around the idea that the gm is a babysitter and the players aren't expected to make their own experiences fun

maybe a lot of it comes down to how bookish communities tend to view conflict as something that only arises at the absolute last possible moment where it can be resolved, but no amount of saying "remember that the gm is a player, too" will ever fix a table that hasn't also internalised "remember that all players share responsibility for their collective experience"

there are obviously some situations in designing games where you have to account for the fact that players will buck the gm's ideas, but at the same time, you have to wonder why it's so widely accepted to play games with people who are deliberately trampling you every time you speak

at some point, you really just do have to ask why you, as a gm, are willing to put up with players who aren't putting as much effort into respecting your roleplay as you're putting into respecting theirs

"what do I do if the players trample the campaign I wrote in favour of hunting goblins?" why are they doing that? if you've spent days agonising over what you did wrong and can't find it, maybe it's time to ask why you're playing with people who are doing their best to exclude you from their playtime?

maybe it's time to just talk with your players instead of herding them like cats?

or, to simplify that all down,

when something is happening at your table and it makes you feel frustrated, ask if this would be acceptable conduct in a scenario where all trappings of a "game" were removed. if you were all on equal footing roleplaying in a chatroom, would you feel like your messages are being ignored? would you want to leave?

then it's time to talk

Tumblr 200-Word RPGs 2023

Last November, we did an informal game jam for folks who wanted to write something for Writing Month, but would prefer to write fewer than fifty thousand words of it. You can find the complete list of participants for that event in this post here. There's also an off-Tumblr archive of entries whose authors gave permission for them to be preserved here, if any of those links turn out to be broken.

Last year's collaboration went over well enough that I thought we might dust it off again this year. To be clear, this is just for fun – it's not a curated jam, and nobody's judging winners or handing out prizes..

If you'd like to throw your hat in, just follow these steps:

Step 1: If you're unfamiliar with 200-word RPGs, read a bunch of last year's entries (linked above) or browse the 200 Word RPG Challege archives at https://200wordrpg.github.io/ to get your brain-meats properly configured.

Step 2: Write your own 200-word RPG. If you're not sure whether you have 200 words or not (and with RPGs it can genuinely be difficult to tell!), you can use the word counter at https://200wordrpg.github.io/wordcount to check.

Step 3: Reblog this post and append your 200-word RPG.

Step 4 (optional): Please indicate in your post whether you're okay with having your 200-word RPG archived off-site for posterity – if you don't say anything one way or the other, I'll assume the answer is "no".

(As before, as a courtesy to anyone who's creeping the notes, please restrict non-200-word-RPG commentary to replies and tags until November 2023 is over – let's make the actual games easy to find!)

ANTI-MEMETIC

3-34,864 Employees

MATERIEL

1 ID Card Each 1 Pencil Each 4 6-Sided Die Each (in a pool) 1 Yahtzee Scorecard

ID:

NAME CLEARANCE PERFORMANCE REVIEWS (four ratings chosen between 1 and 6)

Choose a Leader, they begin clockwise rotation and keep score. Each turn the dice pool is rolled thrice, saving dice of the active Employee's choosing between rolls.

The Enemy is Yahtzee. Defining Yahtzee is dangerous, instead, define what it is not. For number scores, the dice pool must contain exactly FOUR of the number, and there is a price, active Employee's performance reviews matching the number score are ERASED.

There are as many dice in the pool as there are performance reviews between employees. Rectify any errors.

Yahtzee is 5 or more of the same die result. All Performance Reviews on the whole team matching the Yahtzee number are ERASED as you are noticed. Rectify any dice pool errors.

No Employees on the Anti-Memetics team have no performance reviews. Records claiming otherwise are errors, and are discarded.

If all scores are filled, the Enemy's shape becomes clear. It may yet be stopped.

If the team has no employees, then

There Is No Anti-Memetics Team.

///

Archival is fine. Obviously heavily inspired by The Antimemetics Division, particularly qntm's works, on the SCP Wiki. Cutting this down to 200 words from like 550 was painful. Also, this is deeply untested in a pretty horrifying way, and may be impossible or too easy.

“If a friend of mine gave a feast, and did not invite me to it, I should not mind a bit. but if a friend of mine had a sorrow and refused to allow me to share it, I should feel it most bitterly. If he shut the doors of the house of mourning against me, I would move back again and again and beg to be admitted so that I might share in what I was entitled to share. If he thought me unworthy, unfit to weep with him, I should feel it as the most poignant humiliation.”
