when i see people express sentiments like this, my thought is pretty much “who exactly are you trying to prove a point to?” the democrats? if trump gets elected, they’re going to be completely sidelined if not worse and will be entirely focused on trying to get back in power and i can tell you they will NOT be moving further left. netanyahu? it’s a BETTER outcome for him if trump wins since trump is SIGNIFICANTLY more pro-israel than biden has ever been. the people in gaza? they need a ceasefire which has been rejected by both the israel and the hamas sides multiple times and a trump win WILL NOT make that a stronger possibility.

"We need to sacrifice immigrants, people of color, women, and the LGBT community to send everyone a message that we're against crimes against humanity. We're the moral ones here btw"

Also, going by her profile picture, it looks like she's white, and it reeks of white savior bullshit to be like "I'm fine with sacrificing my rights to Send a Message <333" Not only is this incredibly privileged, letting Republicans win would be sacrificing other people's rights, too. People losing their rights in America will not free Palestine. No one, especially women (and the twitter op looks like a woman) should have to sacrifice their basic human rights and autonomy, and the general public tends to find "put your own human rights aside and sacrifice yourself for the Cause" to be an insane position!

Trump has repeatedly demonstrated that he’s rabidly bigoted against Muslims and against Arab Muslims in particular but sure, voting for him by proxy (which is what refusing to vote for Biden actually is) is definitely the way to show that you care about Palestinians. Letting the fascist racist who tried to ban people from majority Muslim countries from entering the US back into the White House will absolutely send the message that people oppose Israel’s actions in Gaza.

“We won’t have the exact contact times for the telecommunications satellite until next Monday.”

… it’s a satellite. If you know exactly where it is now and what speed it’s orbiting at then knowing when it’s going to pass directly overhead of a specific location is just a series of math problems.

the thing is when people say a specific fanfic trope comes from supernatural they usually mean "it was invented by the supernatural fandom in a fanfic". on the other hand, when people say a specific fanfic trope comes from star trek, they mean "it was the plot of at least one star trek episode"

If you're willing to overlook the blatant and virulent antisemitism riddling the student protests in the US "for the cause", and you're not supporting the protests in Israel that might actually make a difference, fuck you. You've shown your true colors.

this is for those who despair over seeing ships or tropes that make them uncomfortable while they do their little scrolly-scroll on ao3, acting like they aren’t responsible for their own internet experience

(alternatively, the back button also works)

Reminder that this only works so long as writers tag their fics properly.

Readerfic and modern/mundane AUs are the two plagues that AO3’s filtering system can’t help with. Because the people who inflict those on the rest of fandom refuse to tag them consistently.

Okay but the weirdest thing about the whole "Brotherhood is better you should skip 03" discourse that's become commonplace now, it sort of forgets the world Brotherhood came out in and why you should watch the original Fullmetal Alchemist. When Brotherhood came out, the original Fullmetal Alchemist was one of the most beloved and most watched animes of all time. Brotherhood assumes you the audience have already seen it because of course you have, everyone has seen it, so it skips important information and speeds the story up because it doesn't want to bore you with things you already know. Have you ever wondered "hey why does the first episode of Brotherhood kind of suck, and why am I being introduced to like 50 new characters, and why are they acting like I know what the hell an alchemist is?" It's because Brotherhood thinks you've seen 03.

The first 7 or so episodes of Brotherhood constitute dozens of chapters in the manga, and the first 25 or so episodes of the original Fullmetal Alchemist. The Nina Tucker episode in Brotherhood, in FMA 03 takes up nearly three episodes. Yoki gets a backstory in 03 and it's genuinely one of the best episodes and taken directly from the manga and Brotherhood glosses over it because: duh, you've already seen it. And so if you skip the original you miss out on dozens of really great character building episodes like Ed and Al meeting Hughes for the first time and getting to spend a whole episode helping him free a train from terrorists, or Ed and Roy having a duel that expands on the relationship they have, or episodes where the brothers just help out random people in towns before the major story gets going.

The original also paces itself quite a bit better than Brotherhood and is more in line with the mangas storytelling. In the manga we don't find out about The Gate until nearly two dozen chapters in, and the same goes for the original anime. Like, that's a twist reveal in those stories, and it's weird that the most watched series is the one where they tell you all about The Gate in the first two episodes because they assume you've already seen the original show.

What's more, people don't know that Hiromu Arakawa helped write for the anime while she was still in the middle of writing the manga, and as a result was inspired to write scenes in Brotherhood that the anime did first. That scene of Edward getting impaled by a falling beam? Directly inspired by a similar scene in the original anime. There's a lot of little instances of that and they're great when you can recognize parallels and things in Brotherhood that are direct references to the original anime, but people don't notice any of that anymore. Because the original anime is just an automatic skip these days, and it's a bummer because people don't realize what a giant it was back before Brotherhood was released. They treat it as *bad,* not realizing it was one of the most beloved anime of its time and the problems people take issue with have a lot more to do with personal taste than any kind of actual flaw in the writing. Brotherhood was never meant to dethrone it, and the original anime was always supposed to be part of the viewing experience which is why those first few episodes of Brotherhood are so fast paced. So like, please stop telling people Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 is a skip, or it's bad, or you don't need it because Brotherhood is better. Regardless if you think Brotherhood is better or not, the original wrote Brotherhood's check. It was huge, it was beloved, and Brotherhood is *banking* on the knowledge you've seen all of it and loved it. And trust me when I say there is so much to love about the original series. It's still my favorite branch of the FMA franchise, and it's worth your time, I promise you.

I’m normally blissfully unaware of what techbros/AI-obsessed crypto bros think about anything, but as of yesterday I’ve been made aware of the fact that they’ve apparently spent the past two weeks having absolute meltdowns over the X-62 Vista/ACE program (“the AI fighter jet that can dogfight! Elon Musk* warned us about it oh noes!”) and it’s extremely hilarious.

(If you try to google it you’ll get like 80% techbro freakouts so here’s a link to an actual official news article for the curious: https://www.edwards.af.mil/News/Article-View/Article/3744695/usaf-test-pilot-school-and-darpa-announce-breakthrough-in-aerospace-machine-lea/)

*He’s probably just butthurt that it works better than his shitty “self-driving you into a tree” Tesla. And by works better, I mean, “it has not crashed and burned with people trapped inside.”**

**Because it has safety features, because apparently even the literal US military are more concerned about human life than Tesla is.

I realized the "we don't learn about Kent State in school" crowd were liars when I saw one of my old classmates make that claim, and I literally remembered the day we learned about that because they got in trouble for sleeping in class

Avatar

Do you not think it's more complicated than your single experience? You just think people with different experiences are liars?

I think people who say Kent State is structurally covered up are liars, since that's demonstrably untrue. I also think that guy was a liar, because I saw him sleeping

I would need to see a sampling of the history books used in the various history classes taken by those who claim the events of the Kent State Massacre are being actively covered-up in our schools to make a definitive determination of the claim.

My primary high school history text for AP U.S. History had a big-ass copy of the famous photograph of the massacre in the section of the book covering Vietnam and Watergate and the social turmoil of the period between 1968 and 1972.

Of course, I am old and took my mandatory U.S History class within 15 years of the event in question.

I will have to ask my own now-grown kids (graduated in 2009 and 2012, respectively) whether Kent State was covered in their high school history classes.

My AP US history textbook also had big pictures of it (this was circa 2000). That said, the non-AP history classes were infamous for never getting to the end of the textbook/past the 1950s so it’s possible that students in the regular history class had textbooks that included it but didn’t get a specific in-class lecture on it.

(The AP classes actually did get through the whole textbook because there was the looming pressure of “the AP tests are on X date and will include the entire textbook and not just The Revolutionary War plus Why Segregation Was Bad.”)

"Most of Sudan is only one step away from a full blown famine. In a lot of areas the only thing stopping people starving is the presence of community kitchens. This is why we setup 3 kitchens in Khartoum State and are in the process of setting up a 4th. But there has been a massive drop off in donations after Ramadan. Please help with what you can.
