For those of you watching the death spiral of Twitter in real time THIS IS WHY us fandom olds always defend AO3 and it’s donation drives.

Twitter is an incalculable loss for artistic expression, news, and so many other facets I can’t even begin to count.

This sort of loss of information is impossible with AO3 and how it’s set-up. Obviously an AO3 style model isn’t sustainable for every site bc the moment images get involved the server costs skyrocket exponentially, but now more than ever the theory applies.

AO3 is an archive of our own, donators have direct say via vote about what happens to the site, you help shape it.

As long as AO3 has donation drives and doesn’t rely on advertisers it will remain around as a foremost place of art and freedom of expression. What happened to Twitter can’t happen to AO3 as it currently exists. And that is why we fight tooth and nail to protect AO3 from corporate interests and out of touch billionaires like Musk.

I hate that Twitter is dying and that anyone has to experience it, but please learn from this experience!

Never thought I would see the day this hellsite outlived Twitter, but here we are…

So…how has everyone been?

Welcome twitter users fleeing the absolute cesspool that twitter is going to become as Musk gets his way with his awful ideas! Things are better here, and hey, if you're an old user coming back, they've actually improved shit!

Here's a list of important notes for tumblr usage:

  • Don't censor words, particularly trigger warnings. Tumblr has a very functional blacklist (found in your settings) that can filter by post content and/or tags. But the word needs to actually be present for the filter to work. Censoring words like r*pe is actively harmful to people attempting to avoid those topics.
  • Use tags liberally, you have as many as you want, but don't tag unrelated shit. You'll get reported for spam really fast if you do.
  • Set an avatar and reblog things, otherwise you look like a bot.
  • You are not obligated to have your real name anywhere in your blog/bio/etc. Most people here use handles.
  • You can turn your ask box & anons on or off if you are experiencing any kind of harassment. You can also turn off replies on your posts, and turn off reblogs if you need to.
  • Tumblr has keyboard shortcuts on desktop. You can find them listed under the blog/account menu. Go learn them, they make life so much easier.
  • Reblog things. Seriously. Also set your dash in chronological order. You can maintain several blogs if need be, but reblogging things is normal, expected, and how you pass along stuff you enjoy.
  • The majority of people aren't reading your card/dni/blog bio before they reblog stuff. Posts get passed around and the OP often isn't the focal point of the post. Learn to live with it.
  • Fic writers: you have unlimited words, do not post fics as images.
  • Reblogs with comments/tags are encouraged. It's not like twitter's QRTs. The OP will see everything there. Know that before you comment.
  • You have a queue. This means you can set posts up ahead of time to run while you're busy. You can also completely ignore this and just spam your follows whenever you're online. Both are very commonplace
  • It's not weird to go through someone's blog and reblog old posts. That's actually very normal. If you add /chrono to the end of a tumblr tab then you can view an
  • "Spam" liking and reblogging isn't a thing that is a problem. This is invented by people I do not understand. If someone claims this is a problem, they can learn how to turn off or manage their notifications.
  • The only form of promotional posts that tumblr has is "blaze". There is no ad targeting or any kind of invasions of privacy with blaze. You just get subjected to w/e someone wants to show you. If you want to give tumblr some money to help the company keep going and provided an alternative to twitter, it's not a bad way to do it. You can make people look at cat photos.
  • Also, we have fun colors here. Plus actual formatting ability. Use it!
  • People lie on here for fun. Don't accept everything you see at face value, check the reblogs/replies or google something if you're skeptical! Critical thinking is good!
  • Above all else, be chill, use your block button if you need to, and have fun.

Addition for the fic writers: please please please add the read more option on your post. On desktop it's the orange squiggly lines that come up when you click on the textbox.

On mobile I believe it's :: readmore :: (without spaces).

The read more option shortens your post, putting whatever you have under the read more hidden until someone clicks on it. This is super helpful for mobile users if you have a long post so they don't have to scroll forever past your thing.

How many people’s most beloved childhood stuffed animals are actually teddy bears, like I feel like that’s a thing someone made up. Reblog this and put what your longest owned and/or favorite stuffed animal as a child was in the tags, inquiring minds want to know

are you telling me americans have stores that open up SPECIFICALLY for halloween and just. dont exist any other time of the year. you people are insane

Imagine an empty storefront. Some business that closed years ago. The building stands empty, unused for literal months. And then boom. Fall comes around and there’s a Spirit Halloween. There’s no escape.

what the fuck 😁

Yeah this is a thing

Are you serious

Yes and they are divine gifts of beauty and cheap plastic lawn decorations.

… I honestly assumed that the existence of Halloween stores was just a running joke in American TV shows.

No they’re very real

Can confirm this phenomenon also occurs in Canada

It’s fun

Oh, it’s a blast.

Wait, so during non-halloween they are just empty? Like, they don’t switch between seasonal decorations (like christmas, easter, etc), they just…close and wait for next year???

Yeah, it’s not a permanent store. A company will rent an empty building for the 2-3 months before halloween, sell halloween stuff, and then clean everything up and disappear until the following year. And they’ll usually set up in different buildings from year to year. They just find any good-sized empty store space that will give them a cheap, short-term lease.

It’s so temporary that the halloween stores don’t even have a real sign, they just hang up a banner outside:

So you’re telling me that every year for a month or two the Spirit of Halloween possesses a dead building then disappears?

that is exactly what we’re telling you

Real talk on how the hell this works for the Non-Americans going “how are this many empty stores available???” The US is full of capitalist ruins.

Yes, occasionally Spirit Halloween ends up in small empty spaces in a downtown if the stars align just right. But overwhelmingly the end up in strip malls or freestanding big box stores. You HAVE to drive to them. Nobody lives within walking distance.

Freestanding big box stores are built entirely to order and are meant to be replaced semi-frequently. It’s cheaper to just build a newer, bigger one at another location while promising the local government “so much economic growth!!!” that they cut them a deal on the property taxes for X number of years… and the megachain meanwhile knows exactly when that term is up and  is already hunting for a new location  to start the process anew.

These buildings are so shoddily constructed and so purpose built they’re almost unusable by anyone except the original builder. To the point where some big box retailers have challenged the assessment of the building while its in use and generating $30 million in profit to have it valued based on resale value as if it was empty and abandoned.. AND HAVE WON.

HOW CAN IT GET WORSE?!?! Many of these properties also have deed restriction on them. That specifies if sold, they can’t be to a competing retailer.  So if it was a big box department store, it may specify that it can’t be sold to anyone that sells competing merchandise… so basically everything from lawnmowers to food to clothing. what the hell can you put in there?

So the resale value of the building is zero, Which when you go to make the assessment… well I guess no taxes are owed.

And these deed restriction generally last decades.  There ARE good reasons for deed restrictions like that. They’re usually used for agricultural land so it specifies it has to stay agricultural OR for industrial land with contamination issues. You don’t want someone to sell a lead smelter to a  shell company and then have them sell it to someone to turn into residential housing. It’s just taken a very, very specific form here.

So you have thousands of these abandoned structures all around the US that are just slowly rotting and are unsaleable.  They might also be being used to show financial “losses” to reduce taxable income more.

Spirit sweeps in and is “hey, wanna extract a bit more money without in any way disrupting this cycle?”  and rents the building for two months and does not give a damn about what terrible repair it is in. They won’t be using it next year. There will be a thousand newly abandoned store to inhabit next year!

The US is littered with building corpses and once a year, necromancy brings them back to life to sell us more things!

op here. holy shit dude

Don’t forget each one of these rotting corpses of a big box store also comes with a parking lot that takes up enough land to build an entire neighborhood which will sit there doing absolutely nothing for years between a store closing and the eventual day when the land is bought and the building is town down to build another identically awful one. The pavement stops water from entering the soil, making floods more likely during rainstorms and preventing aquifers from refilling. It also increases the ambient heat of the area and worsens global warming because it absorbs massive amounts of heat from the sun and then radiates it at night. For no reason. No one can use the parking lot because it’s private property owned by the real estate company and they’ll tow your car for being on their unused and unusable property. Useful land left completely ruined for a capitalist shell game. It’s a nightmare in every possible way.

Just coming back here to say, Hacks is a gift and I totally ship Ava and Deborah. Sadly, there is a lack of fanfiction for them currently. I haven't written a fic in years, yet I am tempted to write one and fill that void, and am definitely hoping others will do the same.
