blessings beyond the grave (yuuji itadori)

“hey, gramps. it’s me, yuuji.” yuuji itadori sets the bouquet of fresh chrysanthemums in his hands down on his grandfather’s gravestone and plops down on the earth beside the sleek marble slab.

“sorry i haven’t visited lately,” he apologises, rubbing the back of his neck with a light laugh. “life’s been pretty crazy. can you believe it’s been four years? four whole years since everything changed.”

a small breeze blows through the cemetery, rustling the leaves in the trees.

“anyway, i just wanted to stop by to tell you about something else that changed.” the blond smiles and looks down at the ground. his eyes catch on the little shock of colour on his arm.

yuuji watches you tie the string bracelet around his wrist, noting how your teeth lightly bite down on your bottom lip in concentration as he unconsciously bounces his leg up and down.

“you better wear this until you die,” you warn with a smile. “or at least until you get your arm cut off.”

he wonders if he should tell you that actually already happened during his first year at jujutsu tech.

“i promise.” he looks up at your face and grins.

“even when the ends are frayed and the colours have faded.”

“yes ma’am.”

“even––”

“can i have that kiss now?”

yuuji holds up his arm to the grave like an offering. “do ya like it, gramps? my girlfriend made it for me.” he says your name out loud. “it’s a pretty name, right? well, she’s even prettier than that. you’d be so proud of me if you could see her.” yuuji laughs and rolls his eyes. “you’d be like, ‘how much did my idiot grandson pay you to pretend to date him, young lady?’ that’s how pretty she is.”

he waits as his words finish echoing through the cemetery. a softer smile takes over his face. “and she’s so smart. not just instinct-wise–– she’s book-smart. she works so hard, too. i couldn’t believe she said yes when i asked her out ‘cause she was so out of my league.”

you blink as you process yuuji’s question. “like, on a date?” you ask.

“yeah. but it’s totally cool if you don’t wanna––” the words spill out of his mouth as he tries to ready himself for the inevitable rejection. after all, you’re one of jujutsu tech’s finest sorcerers and he’s… sukuna’s vessel that somehow lived to see graduation. and might still die later.

“i’d love to,” you cut him off, grinning. yuuji feels like the king of the world.

“we actually had a little fight yesterday, but i think it’s all good now.” yuuji wonders if he should go on. he takes a look at the bracelet on his wrist. “she’s capable, i know, but i’m always worried when she gets assigned crazy dangerous missions. but then she said that it was hypocritical of me to say that as the host of a curse and a fellow sorcerer… which is true.” yuuji sighs and rests his chin in the palm of his hand. “but you can’t blame me for wanting to keep her safe, right? that’s what you do when you love someone. you keep ‘em safe.”

his eyes widen as he processes his own words. “i mean–– uh,” he stutters, straightening his back. yuuji pauses, wondering if he actually means to take those words back. if he means to say that he doesn’t love you.

and then he relaxes his shoulders. a goofy grin blooms on his face. yuuji scrambles up from his spot on the earth and dusts himself off. “thanks, gramps. i needed your wisdom. i’ll come back soon, i promise. right now, i have something important to tell my girlfriend.“

another gust of wind sweeps through the cemetery. yuuji itadori runs out with the leaves in the trees waving gently behind him.
