The war on drugs is rooted in racist policies . The failure of the war and drugs is obvious. We need to find a better solution, because people of color should never be the victims of racist policies. White Americans are more likely than black Americans to have used most kinds of illegal drugs, including cocaine and LSD. Yet blacks are far more likely to go to prison for marijuana, which is not a hard drug. Moreover , even when white people get caught , they get less time in prison.

…is that Rachael Leigh Cook, the same actress who did the original anti-drug ad when she was a teenager?

She grew up, realized she’d been exploited to further a racist government agenda, and turned around to bite the hand that feeds. Awesome.

Tumblr is full of people whose favorite rapper 100% would have been Drake if they didn't learn about him a week ago from the Kendrick beef.

Oh you only listen to rap songs about video games written by white theater kids? Aw man you missed out you would have loved Drake.

Sorcerer and navigator. Originally from Thousands sons legion, but for now working in renegade order known as "Cinders Keepers". By his left arm you can see that order was founded by Emperor's Children. They asked (and very tearfully) Issa to join them and help them to avoid most of daemonic dangers on their hard way...

x men stories are better as a disability metaphor than a race or lgbtqia metaphor.

in a fantasy/sci fi setting, it's always clinically stupid to say racism/homophobia is bad, look how these people who can literally explode other people's minds and warp reality are discriminated against for being different.

in a world where a sex predator could have the powers of professor x, it is actually logical to say yeah... that guy is dangerous, and we should maybe be worried about him. we need to watch him. maybe not have him near people who can't read minds.

and then your metaphor is stupid.

because people of color/lgbtqia people aren't dangerous, and we don't need to be kept away from (straight) (white) people.

it's almost always white people doing these metaphors too because they like the nobility of the suffering minority, but have no deeper understanding of societal inequality. it's just an aesthetic.

racism is just drama for them.

but the x men as a disability metaphor is better, because while people with disabilities aren't dangerous either, the better analogy to real life is the fact that mutants just need special accomodations to coexist with non mutants.

it's still not perfect, but it makes more sense, especially when you consider some mutants can freeze the entire planet and some just look ugly.

mutants have the potential to be diverse in their special needs too, which makes it work even better, since you can argue that anti black racism applies quite unilaterally against people with darker skin colors, and there is unity in simply having darker skin and being able to relate to someone else who knows what it's like to be the only POC in the all white boardroom.

but disabilities are diverse, and different groups needs different things, and some individuals have very rare conditions or unique circumstances. some individuals have obvious disabilities and others have invisible ones.

I don't like to credit mha for much, but the one thing it does get right is actually considering the negative effects of having super powers, and how people with weaker powers are more vulnerable to social discrimination than those with stronger powers.

it's really kinda simple. people have different needs and abilities and society could do better at providing them reasonable accomodations, because they have the right to exist in public and participate in society too.

cyclops and rogue are already not bad metaphors for disability, since cyclops used to not be able to control his eye beams, so he has to wear a visor or glasses, and rogue can't touch people.

but alas.

I know professor x and magneto have the whole Malcolm x and MLK Jr. sexual tension, so we can't ever fully divorce x men from the race inequality metaphor.

I have a hard time talking about American law enforcement, because I have ptsd (like a therapist told me this and everything) from my own experiences with cops and because it's so balls quaking insane.

Like, a cop in the United States can pull you over for any reason. Which is a nice way of saying no reason, because literally anything can be used after the fact as justification. A cop can say its cuz you looked at him, or didnt look at him, or it looked like you were holding something, or looked like you were driving too perfectly for it to be natural. It's insane.

There are apparently no circumstances where a cop can't just kill you. The line the courts have applied is "reasonably believed" you were a threat, but that's such a nebulous nothing limit that people get shot for reaching for their license, having their phone in their hand, you're running away with no weapon, not being able to follow conflicting commands, like anything. And cops are almost never charged, because every court is going to believe he could "reasonably believe" he was threatened. Fuck, if you give me enough time, I can make any situation seem juuuuust plausibly threatening enough to pass that bar. It's insane.

A cop can just rob you. Like tell you to give him your wallet, take all the cash out, and just walk away with it. Exactly like you would imagine getting robbed in an alley would go, except no one can help. And he doesn't even have to hide it, he just drops it in a box at the station and they put it in their bank account. It's legal. You can't prove it wasn't drug money. I can't prove any money wasn't at some point drug money. It's insane.

If a cop just walks in your front door and says "I'm here to kill you and your entire family" YOU ARE GOING TO PRISON IF YOU STOP HIM. There is no positive defense for assaulting a police officer in the United States, and doubly so if you kill him. You have effectively no defense against a homicidal cop, which happens same as any other job. Unless for some reason you have cameras all thru your house and clearly caught the audio of him saying that he's there just to kill you, you have zero chance of not going to prison, probably for life. And that's assuming you aren't killed "resisting arrest" while being taken into custody. It is a crime, in this country, for you to defend yourself under any circumstances if the person you're defending yourself from is a cop. That's insane.

You don't have civil rights if a cop says so. You have the right to have a gun, right? A lot of states have open carry. A cop can shoot you if he sees you have a gun. Doesn't matter if you have a license and everything. So you effectively don't have the right to bear arms if a cop can shoot you for exercising it. You have the right to protest. Unless a cop tells you to stop. He doesn't need a real reason to tell you to stop. And if you don't stop, you can be arrested or shot. So you don't really have the right to protest, do you? A cop cant just search your car or house, right? Unless he claims he heard something, or smelled something, neither of which can be proven. So a cop can search whatever he wants, as long as he pretends there was a "reason". So you dont have protection from unreasonable search and seizure, do you? These are no longer rights- they're things the cops allow.. for now. But legally, those rights have already been found to not actually be rights, because any random cop can decide to take that right from you, for any reason. It's insane.

These aren't like crazy things that I'm just making up, these aren't some weird twisted way I'm looking at something, these are all very real things that we all just.. ignore? Police abolitionists and the media bring these things up all the time, and the overwhelming response to it is: so what? Don't break the law and it won't matter. Blue lives matter. More police funding. Cops should have tanks. It's insane. And I always feel like im just rambling and sound insane when I say this kind of stuff because if you wrote a book and had the dystopian government doing the stuff that the police in this country do every single day, those same people who "back the blue" would line up to say stuff like "*Books government* wouldnt have a chance before us real americans stopped them" on twitter and not even get a hint of the irony.

I can't stress enough how much I miss StumbleUpon

StumbleUpon once sent me to a supercut of Lion King, Lion King 1 1/2, and Lion King II, the main edit being that the scenes of Lion King and Lion King 1 1/2 were interspersed so that they happened in the order they actually happened.

stumbleupon not existing anymore can be directly traced to a dramatic decline in my mental health, I could do a thesis on it.

mini compilation of suggestions from the replies:

The Bored Button - "Press the Bored Button and be bored no more."

Cloudhiker - "Discover the most interesting, weird and awesome websites of the Internet" (not really a rebrand, it's a different person running it but they have the same intention in mind)

Astronaut.io - "These videos come from YouTube. They were uploaded in the last week and have titles like DSC 1234 and IMG 4321. They have almost zero previous views. They are unnamed, unedited, and unseen (by anyone but you)."

Marginalia - "This is an independent DIY search engine that focuses on non-commercial content, and attempts to show you sites you perhaps weren't aware of in favor of the sort of sites you probably already knew existed."

generally a satisfying category structure, but jam is chunks of fruit in a jelly substrate. if the substrate is too liquid your toast gets soggy with not enough coverage in between chunks of fruit. “liquid” in this jam description suggests bad jam. i will die on this hill

also shoutout to German which just says “Marmelade” for everything like good luck in your grocery adventures

FWIW I was taught (for English) that jam is a spreadable preserve made from non-citrus fruits, marmalade is from oranges.

100% with you that the substrate must not be the consistency of a thick syrup, but jelly for me stands up on its own, like a properly cooled pudding would - ideally, jam "juice" is the consistency of yoghurt, for me. A conserve is even worse though, that should be very much specified it's swimming in liquid, as it is a shelf-stable kompót/compotte.

Can you tell I'm peckish?

that’s a great rule of thumb for marmalade in English because 99/100 times it means orange marmalade.

broadly, the only fruits commonly jarred with rind and all are citrus, and seville oranges are classically used.

i do think, though, that marmalade should be assumed to contain rind, and that the rind is a defining factor.

“orange marmalade” without any rind is sold as a concession to pussies offered for children and people with texture issues available and many prefer it, but it’s not classic. imo it’s technically an orange jelly. amusingly, Tiptree labels theirs as an orange jelly but with ‘marmalade’ in smaller type so that the orange jelly buyers don’t feel excluded. well done, brand team: (edit: see f/u post there is a “no peel marmalade” also and i have a lot of questions)

top brands like Tiptree (a good Big Marmalade brand and an easy way to go down the marmalade rabbit hole: not definitive but fun to peruse and illustrative) give you lots of choices re eg coarse-cut vs fine-cut bits of rind as well as degree of bitterness, which is a function of the quantity of rind as well as the type of orange, and generally include a no-rind option. if you get into marmalade enough you’ll see other types of orange, most of which are less bitter even with plenty of rind in, but also lemon, lime, grapefruit, blends, exotics. i, in what apparently is my self-anointed capacity as Marmalade Category Structure Czar, rule that all citrus marmalades are legit marmalades, but beyond citrus it’s iffy. if the rind is used, especially if it’s prominent in the texture of the jam, or if the jam is unusually bitter as basically-sweet jams go, the thing can probably make a marmalade case for itself.

i’ve occasionally seen the word “marmalade” used for savory-sweet vegetable chutneys to be used as sauces. this mostly suggests to me that the product branders or menu/recipe writers are trying to be all fancy-rustic. i’d allow it under poetic license iff coarse jammy texture with bits of citrus rind in it; strain out the rind, you’re on thin ice; jam that’s never met a citrus fruit in its life, you’re a chutney, go home.

For some reason (Brexit?) Rose's marmalades have become bloody hard to find in Ireland, and even Tesco - who used to make a very good Lemon-Lime - have discontinued it.

At this rate we'll end up making our own.

Article basically says that s2 will be greenlit if s1 blows up on Netflix when it drops there on May 31st.

To those who've already watched it and have Netflix, watch it again! To those who haven't, here's your chance, and spread the word! This show is incredible and unlike any other western animated show out there and it'd be a shame if it became yet another victim of corporate write-offs. Let's give Scavengers Reign a second chance at life!

This show is so good - a human colony ship essentially crash lands on an exoplanet teeming with truly alien life in an ecosystem like we've never seen before.

The art is gorgeous, the worldbuilding is fantastic, the story is compelling, and the voice acting and sound work are great.

Seldom do we get science fiction shows like this. It would be a tragedy if it's not renewed.

We here at Ad Astra strongly recommend Scavengers Reign!
