You Saw This Coming of the Day: NY State Launches "Text Stops" to Discourage Texting & Driving

In an effort to dissuade drivers from using the cellphones while driving, a total of 91 "text stops" have been installed across major highways in New York State where motorists can stop the car to send their text messages. The new accommodations come off the heels of a recent crackdown on texting drivers by the law enforcement, which has resulted in over 365% increase in the number of summons and tickets issued since last summer. During a press conference announcing the rest areas, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo added that the state would do everything in its power to combat the threat of distracted drivers, citing heightened penalties and new detection techniques.

Single Topic Blog of the Day: 300 Sandwiches

The New York Post's senior reporter Stephanie Smith's boyfriend Eric has taken "Make Me a Sandwich" to a whole new level. After he jokingly told Smith that she was "300 sandwiches away from an engagement ring" in June 2012, Smith launched the blog 300 Sandwiches to document her journey of learning how to cook while earning wedded bliss. Today, after creating more than 176 sandwiches, Smith revealed her blog project in a column article on the New York Post, in which Eric was quoted as saying "[Men are] not complex. Just do something nice for us. Like make a sandwich." Hat tip goes to Gawker!

Kickstarter of The Day: Misery Loves Company

Actor and comedian Kevin Pollak personally reached out to The Daily What about his Kickstarter project. Here is all about the project in his own words:  Hi, I'm Kevin Pollak. If you love comedy or if it's ever made your life just a little funnier, then I need your help telling an important story. While funny people enrich all of our lives, a staggering number of comedians are truly miserable. Why do so many talented comedians who beam with life and energy on stage suffer from depression, addiction and suicidal thoughts in their private life?  I'm directing a documentary called "Misery Loves Comedy" to shed light on this bizarre dichotomy. I want to let the public into the private lives and the personal stories of great comedians. So far, the comedians listed in the image above have agreed to appear on film. We've already shot some of these interviews and let me tell you, the conversations are incredible.  However, the original 25 famous funny f**kers who agreed to talk with us have now turned into over 60, and we need more funds to finish the film. There are 24 hours left in our Kickstarter campaign, and anything you can do to promote or participate helps. Thanks everyone.

Resentment of the Day: Pentagon's Fax Machine is Broken, Holding Up FOIA Requests and Won't Be Replaced Until October

If you've filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with The Pentagon recently, don't hold your breath because it's going to take longer than usual to hear back. According to MuckRock, the only fax machine used by the Office of the Secretary of Defense to process these requests has been out of order for two weeks, leading to more than 1,000 backlogged requests that have been submitted by journalists in light of the National Security Agency scandals. In responding to the reports, a Defense Department spokesperson projected that the machine probably won't be back up until "sometime in October, but could extend into November."
