What I thought reading as an English major would be: Ah, let me relax under this tree in a warm sweater and read this classic piece of literature.
What reading as an English major actually is: I have two days to read this 500 page novel about a bunch of horrible people who I think are all cheating on each other but I'm not sure because this writing style is nearly incomprehensible.

you deserve to be loved without having to hide the parts of yourself that you think are unlovable.

There’s a big difference between holding a person or circumstance responsible for your emotional pain and recognizing a frightened part of your personality as the cause of it. In the first case, you need to change someone or something outside of you to relieve your pain. In the second case, you need to change yourself in order to eliminate it. This is the difference between reacting and responding: creating with fear and creating with love; pursuing external power and creating authentic power.

& did you know
there is a man
I can only talk about in metaphor,
the way his tattoos
make an avalanche
of my mouth
(even now)
