A couple years ago, I was staying with a friend for New Year’s and we’d decided to drive down to this adorable strip of locally-owned small business shops and check them out. The bakery was particularly crowded and since I wasn’t planning to buy anything, I waited outside. It’d been snowing, and since moving I’d picked up a “Californian-experiences-true-midwest-winter-for-the-first-time” habit of making at least one (1) tiny snowman every opportunity I get

so I built a little snowman on one of the small tables on this strip.

after about three minutes of cramming ice together, I hear, “Do you want espresso beans for the eyes?” and I turn around and there’s this gal leaning precariously far out the window of her coffee shop, surrounded by her coworkers, holding out her hand and said espresso beans.

I think of those strangers often. just the thought of them all looking out the window to see this random stranger on the corner in the snow building a tiny snowman and deciding to join in, make it special for no other reason than that they wanted to. people are so, so precious and I’m never going to forget that moment.

i see posts here about how people are so mortified when they are acknowledged as being a regular customer somewhere that they never return. cowards. the employees at taco bell treat me like a celebrity. like royalty. i am their strange little pet customer who gets traded along as staff comes and goes. they know my car before i even speak in the drive-thru speaker. today i was 2 hours late and she ran over and squealed that she "thought i'd left them!" and that she "made my order with extra love!" and you what, she did

it's funny that this is getting notes again, because last night i went to the thai place in my neighborhood. it's run by a family and during covid times i ate there literally almost every day. later i cut back on eating out so much and hadn't been there in two years but last night we went and ate inside for the first time ever and the owner ran over to say hello and ask how i was, and repeated our old regular order. it was sweet. it's so easy to feel like you are an island, but stuff like this reminds you that you are part of a community.

I thought I was going to have to fight to be anywhere near the front of the stage last night but I ended up being third in the queue and even managed to switch sides in between acts to see both bassists, I almost cried 😭😍

HOLY SHIT

Okay so it's been 4 months since the post above, I saw Big Country again tonight and it was literally a dream come true

• front and centre

• roadie asked for my business card when I told him I'm a tech

• made eye contact with the singer (Simon) & guitarist (Bruce) and got looked to a lot and pointed out

• drummer (Mark) came straight to me and gave me one of his sticks at the end

• roadie gave me the bassist's (Gil) set list and a few plectrums

• merch guy took them the T-shirt I made, they all signed it and the other guitarist (Jamie) followed him back out to say how much they all loved both the design and how enthusiastic I was, and how they noticed I knew all the words

• had 2 people ask where I got the T-shirt from and thought it was cool I made it myself

I'm literally going to be thinking about this for months

Another six months on, another gig, another round up of an incredible night

  • front and centre again
  • discovered a really cool local band as the opener
  • they played some of my all-time favourite songs
  • Simon and Gil noticed me a lot
  • I made T-shirts for the whole family this time and they got seen, and I was pretty confident 3 out of the 4 would get played as they were from the album/Fields of Fire but the 4th was based on Restless Natives which I didn't expect them to play... guess what the encore was
  • Simon & Gil came out after and signed our T-shirts and Simon said "I saw you down the front there"
  • I had business cards this time! Gave one to the roadie who gave me a nod and one to the drummer of the local band who immediately took it to show their bassist
