Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul is currently flooded

I don't make these kinds of posts, but Rio Grande do Sul (a brazilian estate) is going through its worst natural catastrophe in recorded history and I need everyone to know about this. Its currently looking like this:

What is going on

Most of Brazil suffers from yearly floods during the rain season. These floods most of the time aren't bad, with water going away a few hours later. Sometimes they are a nightmare, with people losing their homes and most if not all belongings. But this?

This is not fucking normal.

Currently (May 6th, 2024) there's +80 confirmed deaths and 873 thousand people are being affected by these historical floods. Eight hundred and seventy three THOUSAND people. Once again: THIS. IS. NOT. NORMAL.

Rio Grande has 496 cities, and currently, 364 are reporting problems related to this. It's almost the entirety of Rio Grande - and you know how big Rio Grande is? If you're from the USA, its just a bit bigger than Colorado, and just a bit smaller than Nevada. If you are European, Rio Grande is bigger than the United Kingdom. Can you imagine if almost the entirety of the UK was underwater? Because I sure fucking can just by watching brazilian news!

Rio Grande expects floods. It rains a lot in Brazil. What no one expect is having to deal with 2,30 meters - 7'7 feet for reference - ABOVE the expected flooding level, which is 3 meters (9'10 feet). This means that there were 5,26 meters (17'3 ft) of water. Chart for comparison:

I live in São Paulo, which is completely unaffected by what is going on over there, but I need people to be aware of this. Why?

How YOU can help

A single US dollar is almost five reais. One euro is around 5,50. This may not be much to a lot of people reading this, but literally anything helps. If you donate U$10, it's R$50 for us. If it's euros, then it's R$55,00.

If you can't donate, please just reblog this post.

[Image description: four photos of Rio Grande do Sul and a chart.

First photo: a city flooded with orange-brown water. The high rises are still visible above the water, but their lower floors are completely submerged. Buildings that are only a few stories tall are mostly or completely underwater.

Second photo: an elevated roadway with floodwaters up to the edge of the road. In the distance, a higher part of the road that is clearly a bridge is visible. The trees planted around the elevated roadway are submerged so far that they look like bushes.

Third photo: a crowd of people in the street, standing in floodwaters that are up to most people's waists, or in some places, chests. They are partially crowded around a small rescue boat that is already full.

Fourth photo: an aerial photo of a town where the majority of buildings are so flooded only their roofs are visible.

Chart: a height comparison showing two silhouettes of people. The one on the right is labeled "6'0 ft person" and the one on the left is labeled "the flood". The six-foot person is only as tall as the middle of the flood's thigh - it would take at least 3 six-foot people to match the height of the flood.

Vetted family fundraiser masterpost 1

Version date: May 7th 2024.

This is a masterpost for the evacuation fundraisers I've vetted so far. The numbers next to the names have no significance beyond ease of navigation for me for when I check their progress in the future. You should look at the disclaimers instead and focus on those. Occasionally I will update these with new info, including new fundraisers, and the amount of cash that's been raised. Check in regularly on the original post when you see it being reblogged. In all likelihood once its reached you it's already outdated. This post is part of this masterpost series compiling fundraisers for Ghazzah and Sudan. I focus on Ghazzah as I am Palestinian and am more equipped to do verifications as I'm more familiar with my own country and its politics and dialect, but if I know a fundraiser for a Sudanese family is legit I will include it here.

Joe Biden makes a speech saying Hamas are driven by the ancient desire to eliminate Jews. Hamas was created in 1987, Joe. Ain’t nothing ancient about them. So unless you are implying that Palestinians are driven by the ancient desire to wipe out Jews which is KKK cross burning level of racism, you might want to tone down the racist bullhorn that you are mistaken for a dog whistle.

Liberals were brought to tears by Trump’s racism will nod along to Biden’s open pronouncement to eliminate Palestinians and Arabs in general.

The first Hamas constitution had antisemitic language in it (quoting the 19th century antisemitic Protocols of the Elders of Zion in Article 32), but everyone who signed that original Hamas charter is dead.

The 2017 charter explicitly condemns antisemitism. But these facts don't matter to people who commit genocide. Antisemitism in one article of a document nobody uses anymore is justification, to them, for killing 50,000.

Alaa’s family’s home was destroyed by occupation bombing. After suffering homelessness, hunger, and danger from IOF troops and bombs, Alaa and her son were able to evacuate Gaza to Egypt.

However, Alaa’s ailing mother is still in Gaza. She is homeless after the destruction of her house, malnourished due to the occupation’s famine, sickly due to the destruction of waste treatment infrastructure, and exhausted from a life in displacement. You can find photos and more information about Alaa and her mother’s living conditions on Alaa’s blog @alaaalkhateeb and on her campaign page.

Alaa’s mother has had to flee various shelters on several occasions due to IOF bombing. Each time, she is forced to carry her few intact possessions and what little food and water she can find. When she is not fleeing for her life, she is forced to search for food and water, and if she is fortunate enough to find any at all, she has to haul it back to her shelter on her own.

These living conditions would be exhausting for anyone, but are especially so for an elderly woman who is sick and starving. The burdens she is forced to bear in order to survive are weighing very heavily on her, and her condition is deteriorating rapidly.

Alaa is trying to evacuate her mother from Gaza before it is too late. She only needs to pay the evacuation processing fees for one person, which means her fundraiser goal is relatively small. I am hopeful that we can share Alaa’s campaign and achieve the goal quickly, so that Alaa can evacuate her mother as soon as possible. If you cannot donate, please reblog this post, reblog the posts on Alaa’s blog @alaaalkhateeb, and repost this link to your own blogs and across all of your social media accounts.

Thank you❤️

Rio Grande do Sul is currently going through extreme flooding and the government is basically doing nothing about it.

[ID: a tweet thread by @/isatinie.

First tweet read: WHAT'S GOING ON RIO GRANDE DO SUL AND HOW YOU CAN HELP ❗❗❗❗

RT TO SPREAD THE WORD

There is a picture attached depicting the flood. It shows a bird's-eye view of an area of building and trees. The majority of them have been entirely covered in water, and there are some that have their tops poking out of the water. There are lights shining from within the murky water.

Second tweet read: Rio Grande do Sul is a state in the southern region of Brazil. It is the fifth-most populous state in Brazil and the ninth-largest by area. I was born and raised there.

Two images attached, one of the flag of Rio Grande do Sul, and the other of the state marked on a map of Brazil.

Third tweet read: Last week Rio Grande do Sul entered a state of calamity due to heavy rains. There are cities that are completely underwater.

A photo is attched, showing bird's-eye view of another flooded area, once again showing tops of building and trees just barely taller than the water level.

Fourth tweet read: Many people have lost their homes and are crying out for help. The government isn't doing much, whih results in people waiting for rescue of rooftops and dead bodies floating in the street.

There is a video attached. The preview image is of a man sweaming in the water, only his head visible. The video is taken from a little boat.

Fifth tweet read: Civilans are having to do the rescues, when they should also be protected. The situation is so serious that they are tying bodies of deceased people to trees so they can be found when the water recedes.

There is a video attached. The preview photo shows a few people holding hands in a chain in the water, and a small boat at the edge of the shot, seemingly sailing their way.

Sixth tweet read: The Brazilian media is NOT treating this seriously. Yesterday Madonna did a concert in Rio de Janeiro and the media talked more about the concert than PEOPLE DYING.

Seventh tweet read: Citizens who are safe still have no stable water or electricity, which is why I come to ask you to spread this thread. The media needs to know that human beings are important.

Eighth tweet read: The biggest news program in Brazil ended like this yesterday; smiling talking about the Madonna concert. They didn't even have the decency to ask for a minute of silence for the victims of Rio Grande do Sul.

There is a video attached. The preview image is of a news anchor looking calmly at the camera with a light smile on her face.

Ninth tweet read: I can't even contact some of my family members. I don't know if they are fine. My friends had to evacuate from their own place cause there's too much water.

Tenth tweet read: If you want to help us and donate, here's some links.

There is a link attached. It's the same link as OP of this post added under "Link for donations".

It’s really heartening how much people on this site came together to help Ahmed @90-ghost. He’s in Egypt now with his younger brother waiting on his mom and older brother to join them. The issue now is living expenses. Life is extremely difficult for displaced people, and the future is uncertain. If you’ve ever wondered how you can help a Palestinian displaced by the genocide, here’s one way to do so.

i am the asking about morals anon again. I do still have my moral dilemmas about all of this but I don’t want to bother you. I only want to engage because im 15 and its my dream in life to make the world a good place and be the goodest person in the world possible. I wish I could re-educate absolutely everybody into being a good and not bigoted person so nobody would hurt eachother any more. You may say its impossible but i believe i’ll make everybody good one day. My school therapist said I should apologize though since i felt bad for making you think i was a troll. Have a wonderful perfect day and i am sorry :(

You don’t have to apologize, I’m not upset with you and I’ll take your word for it that you’re really just a young kid but I’m going to choose not to engage with asks on this subject because I don’t think it’s helpful. I’ve already laid out my thoughts and don’t really have anything more to say, and responding to anons means that I have to publicly expose your messages that seem like they ought to be private conversations.

Please please don’t stop loving other humans just because they’re celebrities! What we need to do is de-celebrity them, re-educate them, and fold them into our movement. We need to make people better and not kill them! Even if it means they hate it, don’t stop until we’ve worn them down to the point of changing their ways!

Ngkchdgsjc who said anything about killing celebrities 😭 I said I hope they rot in hell, not that I’m going to personally line them up against the wall

That said, idc about people wishing death and misery on rich and powerful ppl who they could never actually lay a hand on and who are at best complicit in and at worst actively participating in genocide. I wish anyone who could walk into the met covered head to toe in diamonds and gold and silk and expensive designer branding and ignore the protestors right outside the doors calling for the end of a genocide could experience even a fraction of the suffering of the people of Gaza, and I wish that bc I know that they never will and that’s why they can do what they do.

You don’t de-celebrity a person, they themselves choose whether or not to sacrifice wealth and status for doing what’s right. Fucking Macklemore is doing more for Palestine than anyone who had the gall to walk down the red carpet past protestors being brutalized and arrested by the NYPD.

Lmao how is this real, "the ambient sounds of the world were wrong, sir"

Imagine paying Columbia-amounts of money to be taught by someone with kindergarten-level art literacy. Like, motherfucker, the wholeass point of 4’33” is to emphasize how every performance of live music is inextricably linked to the ambient sounds of the context in which it is performed!!!!!!! Paying attention to and thinking about the context of the performance is the point of the song!!!! If the point was to hear birds chirping and people walking, John Cage would have fucking recorded that instead. Insisting that art is only good when contains good things and makes you feel good things is baby-level art criticism. How the fuck is this dude a professor.

Actually I’m not done going off yet. This pisses me off so much. How can you teach the humanities and be so obstinately ignorant? Like bruh, if the chanting outside makes you feel uncomfortable and upset, maybe you should take about four and a half minutes to contemplate why you feel that way. During that time, you might consider things such as: why are there students chanting? What are they protesting? Why do they feel so strongly about this issue that they’re willing to disrupt their lives to bring attention to it? Should I also feel as strongly? Should I be protesting with them? Is my desire for silence more important than the students’ desire for justice? Why do I find the noise they’re making more upsetting than the genocide they’re protesting?

Being like “loud noise make me angy 😠” is so fundamentally incurious and baby-brained it’s honestly unbelievable

The article reads: "Last Thursday, in the music humanities class I teach at Columbia University, two students were giving an in-class presentation on the composer John Cage. His most famous piece is "4'33"," [start highlight] which directs us to listen in silence to surrounding noise for exactly that period of time. During the second, raindrops began pattering the roof, and during the third the people themselves made all kinds of interesting sounds as they talked or walked out.

Hi,

This is a fundraiser that could use some boosting because they are not even at 1k yet. The crowdfunding is for 2 brothers (one 20, the other is only 14). They lost their parents and are now trying to survive in Rafah.

The gofundme page(it’s in their bio as well) - https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-abboud-and-elias-travel-to-egypt?utm_campaign=p_cp+fundraiser-sidebar&utm_medium=copy_link_all&utm_source=customer

If I can highlight any specific fundraiser I verified today, please donate to these boys. They've been orphaned and they are the last remaining members of their own families.

i couldn't even appreciate the artistry behind the clothing designs this year at the met gala because my bitterness and anger toward the exorbitantly wealthy has grown too much to be contained i try to say ooo pretty gown but all the black hateful bile starts oozing out from under the lid of its container. 7 months of genocide and the largest homeless camps my city has ever seen and food banks in the universities and baby formula locked behind glass and stomach gnawing guilt over a $7 latte and rent is always late and always behind on electricity bills uh ohhhh summer is here time for another wild fire. oooo pretty gown. the next met gala theme will be bear spray and what happens is i bear spray inside the gallery. i can't even force a sort of healthy detachment anymore like "haha oh well i guess that movie actor is rich it's not like they're an ultra wealthy bazillionaire oooo pretty gown" they're all worms to me vile beasts i look at them in their isolated imagine john lennon covid song bubble and i feeeeeel the milk of human kindness curdling within me. how can you smile at the camera. we are all dying girl. isn't there a protest not even a block away from you guys? protesters and riot cops and homeless ppl in the streets. i guess that's unfair you guys deserve a night of glitz and glamour and getting away from it all as if you're not constantly away from it all. girl we are dying. sick sick world. sick dying world. anyway i didn't watch the met gala this year

‘Exhaustion’, ‘panic’ as the displaced search for shelter in Deir el-Balah

May 8th 2024, 11:45 GMT

Hani Mahmoud, reporting from Deir el-Balah, Gaza

Events are evolving rapidly. People in Rafah are filling up the roads and evacuating from the city.
They are moving their stuff either by car or by animal-drawn cart, using whatever means of transportation available as Israel expands its intense bombing campaign. The bombing seems to be moving a little further towards central Rafah, as well as the western part of it.
People are pouring into central Gaza by the thousands, mainly to Deir el-Balah city.
The vicinity of this hospital – Al-Aqsa Hospital – is becoming very crowded, with many families looking for any small, empty area… to set up tents or whatever they’re able to construct.
Exhaustion and panic define what these families are experiencing.

‘Hamas will move northwards’: Israeli military spokesman

May 8th 2024, 12:25 GMT

Daniel Hagari, the Israeli military spokesperson, said he expects Hamas to regroup and continue operating even after the Rafah operation, but that Israel will keep pursuing it wherever it goes.
“I want to tell the public so that they do not delude themselves: Even after we deal with Rafah, there will be terror,” Hagari said in an interview with Israel’s Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper.
“Hamas will move northwards and try to reconstitute itself, even in the next few days. In every place Hamas returns to, including in northern and central Gaza, we will return to operating.”

For US unions like the UAW — which has thousands of members in weapons factories making the bombs, missiles, and aircraft used by Israel, as well in university departments doing research linked to the Israeli military — the Palestinian trade union call to action is particularly relevant. When the UAW’s national leadership came out in support of a cease-fire on December 1, they also voted to establish a “Divestment and Just Transition Working Group.” The stated purpose of the working group is to study the UAW’s own economic ties to Israel and explore ways to convert war-related industries to production for peaceful purposes while ensuring a just transition for weapons workers.
Members of UAW Labor for Palestine say they have started making visits to a Colt factory in Connecticut, which holds a contract to supply rifles to the Israeli military, to talk with their fellow union members about Palestine, a cease-fire, and a just transition. They want to see the union’s leadership support such organizing activity.
“If UAW leaders decided to, they could, tomorrow, form a national organizing campaign to educate and mobilize rank-and-file towards the UAW’s own ceasefire and just transition call,” UAW Labor for Palestine members said in a statement. “They could hold weapons shop town halls in every region; they could connect their small cadre of volunteer organizers — like us — to the people we are so keen to organize with; they could even send some of their staff to help with this work.”
On January 21, the membership of UAW Local 551, which represents 4,600 autoworkers at Ford’s Chicago Assembly Plant (who were part of last year’s historic stand-up strike) endorsed the Palestinian trade unions’ call to not cooperate in the production and transportation of arms for Israel. Ten days later, UAW Locals 2865 and 5810, representing around forty-seven thousand academic workers at the University of California, passed a measure urging the union’s national leaders to ensure that the envisioned Divestment and Just Transition Working Group “has the needed resources to execute its mission, and that Palestinian, Arab and Muslim workers whose communities are disproportionately affected by U.S.-backed wars are well-represented on the committee.”
Members of UAW Locals 2865 and 5810 at UC Santa Cruz’s Astronomy Department have pledged to withhold any labor that supports militarism and to refuse research collaboration with military institutions and arms companies. In December, unionized academic workers from multiple universities formed Researchers Against War (RAW) to expose and cut ties between their research and warfare, and to organize in their labs and departments for more transparency about where the funding for their work comes from and more control over what their labor is used for. RAW, which was formed after a series of discussions by union members first convened by US Labor Against Racism and War last fall, hosted a national teach-in and planning meeting on February 12.
Meanwhile, public sector workers in New York City have begun their own campaign to divest their pension money from Israel. On January 25, rank-and-file members of AFSCME District Council (DC) 37 launched a petition calling on the New York City Employees’ Retirement System to divest the $115 million it holds in Israeli securities. The investments include $30 million in bonds that directly fund the Israeli military and its activities. “As rank-and-file members of DC 37 who contribute to and benefit from the New York City Employees’ Retirement System and care about the lives of working people everywhere, we refuse to support the Israeli government and the corporations that extract profit from the killing of innocent civilians,” the petition states.
In an election year when President Joe Biden and other Democratic candidates will depend heavily on organized labor for donations and especially get-out-the-vote efforts, rank and filers are also trying to push their unions to exert leverage on the president by getting him to firmly stand against the ongoing massacre in Gaza. NEA members with Educators for Palestine are calling on their union’s leaders to withdraw their support for Biden’s reelection campaign until he stops “sending military funding, equipment, and intelligence to Israel,” marching from AFT headquarters to NEA headquarters in Washington, DC on February 10 to assert their demand. Similarly, after the UAW International Executive Board endorsed Biden last month — a decision that sparked intense division within the union — UAW Labor for Palestine is demanding the endorsement be revoked “until [Biden] calls for a permanent ceasefire and stops sending weapons to Israel.”
