Companies nowadays are getting SO comfortable asking for our social security numbers.

Like why tf does Optimum need my social to install wifi? They're just an internet provider, they don't need my social. I don't care that the last people living at my location didn't pay their bill, there are a dozen other ways to prove that I'm not them without me handing over my social.

Anyway, hot tip, legally you can refuse to give your social security in unnecessary cases like this. If a company needs to prove that you are who you say you are, they have alternative ways to do so.

People who have a legal right to your social security number:

1. The government.

2. People who are giving you a paycheck.

That’s it. That’s everybody. Everyone else can fuck alllllll the way off.

I’m am so done with fucking medical providers trying to weasel my SSN out of me. I have spent decades arguaplaining to officious receptionists in medical offices that it’s illegal for them to require me to give them my social security number and they should not be asking for it.

I do this when ever I'm asked for mine and 9/10 the person I am talking to does a neat little verbal U turn and asks for some other ‘verification’.

Also, since it’s related, remember that government organizations DO NOT call you to contact you. The government sends LETTERS. Usually more than one even.

Like why am I meant to be worried about how high or low I am in the simulation stack? Why am I meant to escape and rise the planes like some Gnostic? Why am I meant to leave Plato’s cave? Why are you prioritizing higher planes or spheres or if you’re all edgy lower planes and spheres? Who told you it went up and down? What does “up” mean in outer space? How do you know what lies outside is more real? What’s so wrong with immanent experience of our present reality? Why must we escape the flesh? Who says it’s lowly?

Also how much of this anxiety about our hypothetical simulatedness is tied to the fact that machines and computers in our techno industrial capitalism are so profoundly alienating and disempowering? Like would we be as worried about this if they weren’t, in our reality, these pacifying or disciplining arms of spectacle and control in our lives? In the crystalline liquid hypercomputational dimension from which we are simulated and projected or whatever is there an NSA, AT&T, Microsoft Excel, proprietary software, and a TikTok algorithm? Is that what we are afraid of? That the secular Gnostic heaven we might be ascending/escaping to is somehow perverted by the bureaucratic cruelty of our own machines of labor and social control?

there’s a very unpleasant rhetorical sleight-of-hand that happens halfway through this post. why do we go from ‘the cosmetics industry’ and ‘the tobacco industry’ to ‘gambling your savings away’ and ‘criticizing your drinking habits’? what is it about the latter two things--about gambling addicts and alcoholics--that makes this post revert to the language of personal responsibility?

this is the language which has been adopted and promoted by, e.g. the gambling industry and legislators looking to expand it in order to sanitize the fact that gambling and gambling addictions are produced by deregulation and industrial expansion.

and i think this sudden shift once we reach the more socially stigmatized forms of monetized social harm is indicative of what this post’s implied stance on bodily autonomy, intentionally or not, ends up being--that once a ‘cosmetic’ procedure becomes sufficiently ‘unacceptable’ then suddenly we will find ourselves talking about the individual who is ‘acting irresponsibly’ with their body rather than the industry and the defenses of that industry this post aims to be a critique of--and as a trans woman i think we should all be allowed to act irresponsibly with our bodies for what i hope are clear reasons!

smash the beauty machine, sure, obviously! but this rhetoric around cosmetic surgery that blurs the lines between ‘individual choice’ and broad capitalistic structural incentives along a gradient of stigmatization doesn’t end at a good place.
