if we look at the original timeline (aka annabeth and percy being born in 1993) then 2009 was a big year for annabeth bcus not only did the battle of manhattan take place and she finally started dating percy, but also minecraft came out and i think that would be a big deal to her

the funniest (cursed) thing about the whole "actually since its normal for parents to get overwhelmed when their kids act out, it's realistic (and thus good) that they made Sally get frustrated with young Percy in the show" thing is that the extent of young Percy acting out is like... crying no at the swimming pool? Locking a car door? Quietly asking his mom why she wants to get rid of him? Like I cannot imagine more tame expressions of fear from a young child

The click of claws on a roof, dust falls down. The alpha wolf is coming, he’s here and he’s near.

Dust swirls, shining gold under the dim candle light. Something else shines, it shines amber in the window, standing out starkly against the inky sky.

Amber eyes. He’s watching you.

grrrrrr..

okay

camp counselor cool dad figure percy loudly making increasingly stupid offerings at the dining hall so the new kids don’t feel awkward doing it as well and inadvertently starting a revolution where the gods get such absurd requests some of them even start happening and it’s a mess but he thinks it’s hilarious and lets it continue bc the idea of zeus fuming over a kid asking for a hoverboard in the brazier offering makes him (maybe not so) secretly smile

new kid: so do i just.

percy: yeah go on!

new kid: do i just. throw my food in and talk?

percy: yeah, pretty much

new kid: not gonna lie sounds kinda sketch

new kid: like do u blame me for not really getting it

percy: not at all

new kid: what would i even ask my godly parent for anyway… not like they care

percy, softening by like a hundred degrees:

percy, very very loudly: HELLO DAD YES TODAY I WOULD LIKE TO ASK YOU FOR THE HAPPINESS AND WELLBEING OF BABY SEALS. WHY? BECAUSE THEY’RE MY FRIENDS AND I LIKE THEM AND THEY ARE ALSO VERY CUTE. PLEASE MAKE SURE THEY’RE HAPPY THANK YOU

@transannabeth why would you leave this in the tags. poseidon is definitely in on it and “accidentally” leaks to percy which specific requests make the other gods angrier bc he thinks it’s hilarious and also loves to play favorites

idk if this is an unpopular opinion or not, because i’ve seen a lot of people say stuff like “percy knows better than to go against annabeth”

but see, most people - anyone with a brain, really - are way too scared to challenge annabeth. because 99% of the time, she’s right. she’s always the most intelligent person in the room. shes not only logical and strategic, but she’s sharp, cunning, and even manipulative if she has to be. (as we’ve seen when she’s faced monsters). no one goes against her. one wants to, no one dares.

expect percy. if there’s one thing he knows how to do, it’s argue with annabeth. it’s like breathing. but unlike when they were kids, they don’t truly fight over stupid things. sure, they bicker and squabble over little things, because that’s who they are as a couple. but percy is the only person who will actually challenge her on something real. something big. he doesn’t do it lightly, because he knows how smart she is. but if he truly believes there’s another angle to something, or that she’s wrong because maybe she doesn’t have all the information, or maybe his heart is just in a different place - he’ll go against her. we see it in mark of athena a couple times. (their face-off kinda puts hazel in a trance). in BotL, there’s an argument between them, and i remember it’s stated that watching them argue is like watching an intense tennis match. its heated and fast paced. people make fun of percy for being dumb, and yet percy is the only one that can keep up with annabeth. he knows her better than anyone. he doesn’t think the same as her, but he knows how she thinks. so yeah, he will call her out. he’ll tell her he disgrees. he’ll even tell her that she’s wrong. and people think he’s crazy when he does it.

but annabeth respects the hell out of him for it. and while she might dismiss anyone else immediately, she won’t with him. because she respects him tremendously, and knows if he’s challenging her, there’s something to it. it doesn’t mean she’s gonna let him win, or that she’s gonna back down, because they are both ridiculously stubborn and determined. but he’ll go head to head with her. he’ll have a screaming match with her. and she loves him for it. she respects him for it. and she finds it ridiculously attractive.

because percy and annabeth are equals.

It’s such a lost opportunity that Percy never got to meet Neptune. Like actual eldritch horror Neptune who has no attachment to Percy or desire to look human. Neptune who hasn’t been seen in 500 years. Neptune who is the manifestation of every fear you’ve ever had about the ocean. And he understands why the Romans don’t honor him.

I just think that would be neat.

The best part of the percy jackson books is that from percy's perspective hes just an easygoing funny cool guy who seems pretty harmless but the moment you see him from someone elses pov hes terrifying. Just a crazy good fighter, a force of nature killing machine, literally gets mistaken for a god in disguise. But he doesnt see that side of himself at all because hes too busy arguing with authority figures and respecting women. I love him

okay last one for the night but. honestly i really hate how the franchise has been using loyalty to Rick as a shield for so long. If Rick was involved in a project or not doesn't matter, especially not anymore.

ReadRiordan and the publishing for the franchise has been using this tactic for ages - they obscure if any writing related to the series wasn't written by Rick unless it's special circumstances. It's near impossible to find out who the ghostwriters are (Stephanie True Peters and Mary-Jane Knight). TSATS was promoted as the first time we got a non-Riordan (Rick or Haley) author working on one of the companion novels despite having seven already existing ghostwritten books in the series. The only reason Mark Oshiro was emphasized so heavily for TSATS was because they also work as a sensitivity reader for topics such as queer identity, and Rick had received backlash in the past for being a Straight Cis Old White Guy repeatedly falling into bad habits (that he hasn't broken out of) with certain characterizations that he kept doubling-down on or retconning into oblivion. The show emphasizes that Rick was involved, but the LA Times article brings into question exactly how much he was involved, and it doesn't even really matter either way. The ReadRiordan site actively avoids putting any writing credits on their articles (or art credits...) or anywhere on their site.

Practically the entire fandom unanimously agrees the musical - which had zero involvement from Rick - is the best adaptation of the series so far, including the TV show. Some of the best writing to come out of the series recently was the stuff ghostwritten by Stephanie True Peters (Camp Half-Blood Confidential, Camp Jupiter Classified, Nine from the Nine Worlds, etc). And yet when promotional stuff is posted about CHB:C, there's clearly coded language used to hide the fact that Rick himself didn't write it. Yes, that's how ghostwriters work, but at this point we should really stop pretending "Rick Riordan" isn't just a pen name for a group of authors like "Erin Hunter" and that Rick is actually writing everything in the series. I can easily look up and see which Animorphs books were ghostwritten, and who those authors were. I can find every "Erin Hunter" easily listed on official sites. And yet most people don't even know the Riordanverse franchise has ghostwriters at all.

And the franchise is still trying to use the "Tio/Uncle Rick" stuff. Author loyalty and marketing parasocial relationships isn't going to save the franchise when the author himself can't hold up his own original themes or even keep basic series bible details straight, and especially not if the editors are barely if at all doing their job. And please at least get a goddamn series bible by this point.

For those curious about the ghostwriter stuff-

Mary-Jane Knight ghostwrote PJO Ultimate Guide and Kane Chronicles Survival Guide. Stephanie True Peters ghostwrote Camp Half-Blood Confidential, Camp Jupiter Classified, Nine From The Nine Worlds, Guide To Hotel Valhalla, and Magician's Manual.

Their credits can be found in the books themselves, either in the dedications or in the publishing and copyright information page. You can also find evidence of their credits when researching their names. Here's Amazon listing Mary-Jane Knight as the author of The Ultimate Guide:

She's also credited as the author on GoodReads. And Stephanie True Peters acknowledges her credits as a ghostwriter for Riordan and Disney Hyperion on her linkedin:

I feel like it's also important to note: These are the only ghostwriters i've been able to confirm in the series (not including Haley Riordan's short story, Mark Oshiro's co-authoring of TSATS, or the writers for the graphic novel adaptations, since those are all different from ghostwriters). I did check Heroes of Olympus because I know it's a common conspiracy theory that HoO was ghostwritten and no, I could not find evidence of ghostwriters there. They legally would have to put it somewhere, preferably in the book itself with the publishing and copyright info or acknowledgements.

The Chalice of the Gods except instead of Percy doing quests for gods in order to get recommendation letters, Poseidon shows up at New Rome and terrifies New Rome University’s admissions office

Can't leave all this in the tags 🤣

The real conflict of the story is Percy being mad at Poseidon because NRU didn’t admit him based on merit, but out of fear of Poseidon/Neptune. Poseidon doesn’t understand what he did wrong. He was just trying to be a good dad to his mortal son. How is telling them that “Percy is a very good and hardworking student, and that I [Poseidon] can’t wait for when Percy has a stronger control of his earthshaker powers just like his father. And did you know that Percy once…” bad?

also I had thought that the reason why the yarn was blue in the books was because it was the same color as Luke's eyes. And it was a good setup on RR's part because we so deeply associate blue to Percy that the readers are led to believe it's Percy string being cut, while it's really Luke's. But, the yarn in the show is blue while show Luke's eyes are brown so like, I guess the color correlation was never actually a thing?? lol rip
