interviewer: so you're telling me fanfiction writers not only write but also beta, edit, proofread, rewrite, do the work of an editorial team, tag their stories, format, create summaries, sell their souls to the devil, lose a limb or two along with their sanity, and scream 'heres johnny' as they hope for the best once they hit post.

fanfiction writer: yes

interviewer: many of your kind even create graphics, banners, covers, gifs, and advertise on social media platforms to draw a wider readership. all of it for...free.

My #1 recurring thing as an editor is to guide people away from writing shyly and defensively. If you preempt aggression and try defuse it in your writing itself, you are showing your belly. The audience wants blood.

If you write with the expectation of being hated, you are writing for your haters. This is exactly what they want. So the more you do it, the more of your readers will be haters.

They’re not gonna do it because they’re cowards and they suck but the funniest possible way Disney could reboot pirates of the caribbean whilst still avoiding the controversy that would happen if they rehired Johnny Depp would be to do a prequel (as they love to do) and cast some actor as Young Jack Sparrow and then make him and Barbossa canon for the Diversity Points, retroactively making it canon that all of their previous behavior towards one another was because they’re exes and they made their messy divorce and resulting custody battle over their Sick Ride everyone’s problem

Something to repeat to yourself in the shower:

My stories are not for everyone.

My stories will bore some readers. Some readers will hate them. Some won’t understand, won’t connect the dots, won’t relate to the characters. Some won’t because they can’t, some won’t because they don’t want to, but most won’t simple because my stories just aren’t for them.

My stories aren’t for everyone.

My stories are for me.

And they’re for the readers who will love them. They’re for the reader who have already loved them. For the readers who will see what I see in them and feel the characters and the world the way I do. They’re for the readers who wanted these stories before they even knew they existed. They’re for the readers they’ll make smile, the readers they’ll stick with, and the readers they’ll save.

And just because my stories aren’t for everyone doesn’t make them worth any less to the people they are for.

Not everyone likes butterflies. Not everyone likes spiders. But the people who love those creatures more than anything else would lose a part of themselves if they didn’t exist.

So no, my stories are not for everyone. But that doesn’t matter.

Because they’re for someone, and to that someone, they’re irreplaceable.

Fanfic writers are like crows. If you give them treats (comments) they will bring you shiny things (fanfic)

I thought this said cows and thought, "Okay, tell me more..."

Fanfic creators are like cows, some people think you can just milk them for content, but actually they need enrichment (comments) and a nice pasture to graze on (kudos/likes) and they secretly also like cuddles (asks about their fic/art)
