Could someone on this wonderful platform tell me how to exclude tags from my fic searches on AO3? Like, if I want every Spirk fic on the site, but wanted to exclude, say, mirror universe fics, how would I do that? I am terrible at internetting 😭

On the right side of the page there are filters (on Desktop. On mobile you click the "Filters" button on the top of the work page)! You open the "Exclude" section and type "Mirror Universe" into the "Other tags to exclude" box. Then click on "Sort and Filter" and you're done.

Edit: You can also type "-'mirror'" or "-'mirror universe'" into the "Search within results" box, that'll exclude all fics that mention 'mirror' or 'mirror universe' in their tags, descriptions, or titles.

If you always want to filter certain tags out you could look into the browser add-on "AO3 Enhancements": it lets you set filters that are automatically applied to all AO3 pages. That one works on Desktop only though.

OMG this is perfect! Thank you! My A03 search life is instantly improved!! 🎉❤️

Star Trek is so funny. All of starfleet is so aggressively Neutral Good. Every time they're up against something they Always do the noble thing. Every one of these motherfuckers is so ready to jump on the grenade. It's so cute I love them

Starfleet officers come out of the academy with 2 things: a passion for science bordering on sexual and an incomprehensible desire for self-sacrifice

I love how this is like, acknowledged in lore, too. Like, the reason Starfleet is so full of these bozos is because it's a big non-profit where you get to Do Science and Be Noble. So only people who want to Do Science and Be Noble join up. The organization has a reputation for producing the most moralistic greater-good-loving yuppies in the galaxy. It's a straight-up hero factory. You love to see it

I bet vulcan ships gossip about how starfleet officers can't go a day without volunteering for a life-threatening mission before they start climbing the walls looking for enrichment

sending them on dangerous missions is actually a safety measure, otherwise they start tinkering with the warp drive, and you end up as salamanders

Or start tampering with subspace rifts and end becoming a galaxy-shattering vocal ensemble

It's a post scarcity society! At least, for the core Federation planets.

So what happens when your healthy, happy citizens (numbered in the trillions) runs out of things to do? You can only learn so many obscure skills, study so much art & philosophy, consume so much media before boredom sets in.

Time to explore!

Send those obnoxious grown-ass "I'm bored, mom" kiddos off to Starfleet to see the galaxy!

And the really super-intense ones end up on starships.

"So how'd you get your culture so noble and driven toward general improvement of society?"

"For generations, since the advent of warp travel, we've let our libertarians dirt farm on whatever otherwise worthless rock they find on the frontier."

I often see posts about curating your own online experience that make the point, “content creators aren’t your parents.” And, yes, that is absolutely true! And I try not to be like “as a parent,“ but as a parent…

EVEN PARENTS ARE SUPPOSED TO ENCOURAGE RESPONSIBLE READING/VIEWING BEHAVIOR. NOT filter everything ahead of time for their kid.

When my kiddo was 5, his pediatrician was asking him the usual Well Child Visit questions (“What are your favorite foods? What do you do to get your body moving? Do you know what to do if you get lost in a public place?” Etc.) and she asked, “What do you do if you see something on TV that scares or upsets you?”

I piped up like, “Oh, he doesn’t watch TV without one of us in the room,” which was true at the time and is still largely true now. She said, “Yes, but that won’t always be the case, so make sure you’re talking to him about what to do if he sees something that upsets him.”

So we started talking to him about that, and the answer is simple: “Turn it off or leave the room, and talk to someone you trust about what you saw and what you’re feeling.”

The answer is NOT “Ask your parents to make sure you never see anything upsetting again,” because that’s just not possible — and ultimately that would be doing the kid a disservice, since sooner or later he’s going to be out in the world where we can’t control what he watches or reads. That doesn’t mean we don’t try to make sure he’s watching/reading age-appropriate stuff, it just means that’s not the only safeguard he has — and that’s a good thing.

So yes, content creators aren’t your parents and aren’t responsible for making sure you never see anything you don’t like — but also, your own parents should have taught you what to do when that happens. So if they didn’t, take it from me, your internet mom:

Turn it off.

Walk away.

Talk to someone you trust about how you’re feeling.

And leave the person who created the thing that upset you alone.

When my oldest kids were small -- about 6 and 8 - I bought them a Video (the VCR kind) of John Waters' Hairspray, a film they loved, and, getting home at 3 am, left it for them with a note. They woke me up the next morning. "It's not Hairspray. It's something scary with a car." Due to a mislabelling error, the videotape was Stephen King's Christine.

I mentioned it to friends and a day later got a call from a tabloid journalist who wanted to know about this terrible thing that had happened to my family. "It's not a story, " I told them. "My kids know where the off-button is and how to press it, and the moment they knew they weren't watching what they wanted to watch, they turned it off."

I WANT FOR AO3 TO HAVE A FILTER TO TAKE OUT ALL THE FICS I'VE ALREADY READ CUS MAN I'VE READ A LOT

There's a userscript you can add to your browser that will highlight or hide works that you've already kudosed or accessed before.

You can find it, with instructions, here.

Dear Fanfiction Readers,

If you’re afraid to leave a review/comment because you think it’ll sound stupid, don’t be. Just leave an incoherent reply in all caps. We love that shit.

Sincerely,

A Fic Writer that needs constant validation.

Dear Fanfic writers, I don’t care.

I don’t care if you’ve never written before or if you’ve written hundreds of fics.

I don’t care if your fic is 100 chapters or just one.

I don’t care if there’s too much dialogue, or not enough.

I don’t care if your character drinks “a hot cup of coffee” or “a steaming well of carefully brewed fair trade Ethiopian single origin organic beans, contained in an antique blue willow cup with one tiny chip on the edge and mild cracking in the glaze.”

I don’t care if you use the same pronoun over and over or if you use the word “persnickety” eleven times over the course of ten pages.

I don’t care if your historical references are accurate, or if the characters speak in a way that doesn’t fit their environment.

I don’t care if your romantic pairing makes love on a bed of roses at sunset or if they bang up against the wall in a changing room at Walmart.

I don’t care if your stories are nothing but fluff, or nothing but smut.

I am going to read your fics, and I am going to enjoy the hell out of them. So please keep writing, and ignore comments from assholes. We, the readers, love you.

Reblog if you agree!

So I was like ‘I wanna do this colour in process properly’ and then I was like ‘what would it look like if Star Trek The Animated Series was made now’ and this is what it would look like. Fully canon and ready to explore the galaxy. I’ll do it properly eventually 🤣
