Aaaand another side characters backstory...

Onie Stone

Onie grew up on Pluto Station, as one of many test in vitro children. Early on he showed signs of high intelligence mixed with greater strength than the staff was expecting or experienced in handling. To their luck he was highly mentally and emotionally stable. No other child ever again reached his levels and the scientists behind the test run never figured out how he came out this different. With 20 years of age Onie had worked himself into highly respected position among space researchers, with multiple fundamental rules of the space travel being successfully researched by him. Then he disappeared for over 15 years with a small one Person Falcon class ship called "Serudas". The remnants of the ship were found after 10 years, seemingly having fallen apart after flying faster than the believed maximum speed for a full year without break. Even though no trace was found of him, he was soon thereafter thought to be dead. Until he suddenly appeared in the earth academy headquarters, refused to explain and asked to become instructor for engineering. He refuses to explain how he was able to speed up higher than the former believed maximum, which has made him loose his position of respect, making him but a regular instructor.

Bg story of a side char for my long story... Decided to upload here as well in case someone in the future stumbles upon my story and wants all the juicy bg

Tro Ropi

Tro grew up as one of many children in a small village on a planet closer towards the rim of the , at the time existing, empire, born just as war started to loom. From when she could stand her dad would teach her how to fight, saying she should be able to defend herself. Even though she was able to befriend many of the other children in the village until they all one night decided to make a vow. A vow to all become high ranked combat officers in the space corps. As time goes on many of the others would either have to move away from the planet as their parents felt safer elsewhere, others picked up jobs on planet and from the few that actually stayed to enroll at the space corps, she was the only one to enroll as combatant. This made her angry about her former friends, but she put all her anger into training harder and she soon was thrown high into the ranks. Almost got the rank of first mate on the Flagship, but then she saw one of her old friends in the engineering crew, and began assaulting him. He barely lived and had to leave the corps as his injuries were to stark, she got demoted, as she was still one of the best, to be second mate on the best instruction ship.

(this plays in the universe of my WIP, but to a late point in it, let's call it foreshadowing)

The small ship

The endless void surrounds the ship. Aboard the ship many people run around, some for getting from work to their cabin fast, some to get to work fast and some just to stay in shape. Others are just sleeping. So is the captain.

That is until an alarm begins to sound. It's time for him to wake up and take over the bridge. The night wasn't long but he'd rather take over from his young first mate, after all they are just getting their first experience in ordering a ship around.

So he gets up, cleans himself, gets clothed and walks to the bridge. He doesn't run, because an old rule says, if the captain runs, the ship's sinking, well no sinking in Space, at least.

On the bridge the crew is standing ready to update him on all things happening while he slept. Everything is normal.

Then a faint sign of life stirs in the sensors keeping the deep space in front on watch. Something is happening and everyone around him watches out, trying to figure out the sensor readings. Slowly a sense of hectic runs over them all as they realise something bad and horrible is coming. Something unknown, sending out some form of signal that shows no well intention.

Emergency alarms start blaring, the rest of the ship falls into hectic, the engineers start to bring up the machines, they can feel something coming, the captain now starts shouting out orders, the first mate baffled next to him staring out the window.

For a second something horrible is visible, then the ship turns around. It picks up speed. The engineers optimizing and working hard, pushing the vessel past it's normal limits. The engines, usually silent like an owl even at high speeds are roaring like wild bears. Everyone is working in utter fear. Those not able to help, pray. Pray to whatever being they believe in. Pray for a tomorrow.

But time has planned differently. Suddenly it seems like everything stops. Then the ship slowly starts falling out of speed, only momentum carrying onward. The captain mid yell stops his mouth, takes a deep breath. Sighs and starts going towards the engine section. At first he walks. Then he starts jogging and in the end he can't do anything but run. Run in panic and fear and hope to reach in time, to be able to do something.

But alas. A captain running is never a good sign, wether it be sinking or something else, something worse. It is happening. A heartbeat or two later it is all over. The small ship is lost at the least and destroyed at the worst. Not a singular soul escaped.

Congratulations on 200 weeks of prompts @flashfictionfridayofficial

Distant Stars

The ship had started flying two generations ago. Earth had become hard to live on, the rich had been the first dead, atleast the ones the public was angry about. Only a few weeks after the first signs of the coming doom were seen, the left over humans started building the ship, taking whatever resources were left in hopes of saving enough humans to keep the race alive. In the end 200 humans of different ethnicities and genders were chosen by chance to be frozen until arrival. Everyone else would be needed for keeping the machines running and waking up the frozen ones.

Slowly while the population of Earth started dwindling down our ancestors got ready to leave. In the end a mere ten thousand could be saved, the rest of ten billion died before the rocket was done. Our grandparents, our parents and now us have been keeping the ship on course and running. It will take a few more generations, but we will reach our goal. We all strongly believe that.

In a few days we will reach the turning point. The place in Space where we have to shut the engine of, turn the ship around until it's pointing into the perfectly opposite direction and turn the engine back on. We are all amazed how far the ship has come already. We are aiming for the distant stars, so far we are on course to them. We are sad. We never got to see a sky. Or land. Or sea. All we ever knew is space and this ship. All we will ever know is space and this ship. But we do not fret, for we are so far, but not yet there. We work so our childrens, children children will know what we never. So they can see a sky, a land, a sea.

Preparations for the turning are complete, I as the current pilot, will have full control. There's only empty space before us, that is good as any specks of dust could seriously harm the ship.

I get ready. Thrusters off, and start spinning the ship. The longest hour of my live. Without thrusters we experience no gravity. Everyone floats. Now I'm stopping the spin and slowly start the thrust up again. Softly so nothing falls and breaks.

All went well. We have passed the turning point and are still on course. We will reach, although we can now see the direction we came from. Some are sure that somewhere out there they could see earth. The tiny blue pearl we came from. Had we just given it better care, maybe we could still live there...

Confusion

Some time ago a guy walked in to this bar I worked at. He was a real looker, a real ladies man. But he didn't share a singular look with any of the women that tried to get his attention. Still he came every night, ignored all the women, drank a couple of beers, paid with a handsome tip and left again.

A few days after he first appeared here, I noticed the stares. He wasn't just looking around the room. His eyes sometimes stayed a while on a mirror through which he could see someone, that I couldn't see. I didn't think much of it, just that maybe a woman has finally caught his gaze.

Then he began talking to me. Talking about his sorrows and worries. Talking about the small happiness's happening to him. I stayed professional. The perfect, listening emotional dump. Shortly after he told me he's fallen in love, but it hadn't been reciprocated so far.

I think that was the first time I actually looked at him, not as the guy behind the bar, deciding if I give out more drinks, but as a person. He had a slim build, a face one could only see as good looking and the fluffiest hair I've ever seen.

For the first time I spoke to him as a person. I asked if I knew the person. He looked up, seeming surprised I actually talked, finished his beer and payed. Whilst leaving, he turned around one more time to grin towards me. He didn't return for a week. Then two weeks. I've given up on trying to find out who he meant.

When he did show again it was with another guy by his side. Both of them got a fancy cocktail and sat down at the bar. After finishing about half of their drinks, the other guy got up, told him to "get it done" and went towards the restroom.

Dw the other guy is away I can't hold myself back anymore. I want to know what had been plaguing my mind so long now. I asked him "Is he your special person?" He grins. His grin is growing larger until he breaks into a loud laugh.

After seeing my confused look he quickly quiets down again. "I'm sorry, didn't mean to confuse you, just had some stuff to do. I am gay yes. But no he's just a friend." His voice is soft like honey, raspy like smoke. "So when do you get off work?"

Happy (belated) Storyteller Saturday!

This question is about your sci-fi wip "fresh in space": In which time is it set? Is it set in the near future or far away future?

Avatar

Well it is placed in a far future since our current technology and society are like medieval times to the characters. In their world wars have happened that unified all of humanity and even brought some creatures/intelligent beings from other worlds into the bond. I try to play the part of a utopia in the future, but there always are idiots within human nature.

But the gay main char will hopefully be able to get over the dangers and idiots. Maybe he'll even gain more than just friends and found family along the way.

For @flashfictionfridayofficial as well as the Cafe prompt bingo... This time let's have a cinnamon roll

Deserted

I wander this beach, golden sand under my feet, blue, blue sky above, a ship on the horizon. There's coconut trees around. On my body a a slightly torn but clean, colorful shirt and some short pants, a ring in my pocket.

I've grown accustomed to the island, don't want to leave into an unknown future in a society that doesn't understand me, doesn't value me for what I'm worth. Some would say, that I'm lost, but I finally found myself, found my place, even though it's far from him. Even though he won't be able to find me here. I just hope that we will find another again someday.

The beginning was tough, between surviving and crying from missing him I barely had time for myself. The ring was for him, a token of my love, a token of gratitude and respect. It has become something holy to me, a promise I couldn't hold, one of many sure, but non before had its importance.

I have built myself a new home, devoid of most electronics, but filled with many a mechanical contraption. The almost only thing I still have is an enlighted picture frame of him.

A few days later

A ship is closing in. Its a small island hopper. A tall person standing on the nose of it. I'm hiding in the forest, at a beautiful lake with a waterfall leading in. A voice behind me says "It's a beautiful place you found here." I remember the voice, but this would be too fairytale. "Is it really you?", I ask with husky voice, unused for too long. I do not dare turn around.

"It is. Now let us eat and then embrace another and cry a while." and so we did. I cooked my best food so far, afterwards we huddled together and cried another to sleep while in a tight embrace. "Let us never separate again", he says. I just press myself even tighter against him. The ring is still in my pocket, but now that he's here, I'll give it to him. When the time is right, afterall we now have a lot of time.

Early Spring

Everyday is getting a little brighter, a little lighter. Why? Well Winter is ending, Spring is beginning, but not fully there yet. I'm sitting here in golden sunshine, reading and waiting. I don't know what or who I'm waiting for, but I like to imagine I'll know when it or they arrive.

The small Càfe I'm sitting in is on the edge of town, just overlooking some slowly greening trees, a golden glowing sandy beach and the endlessness of an ocean. The owner did their best to give this place a cozy, homy feeling and there's always some author or young couple here. Now that outside is growing warmer, older couples are also starting to show up more again.

This cozy idyll is suddenly disturbed when yelling between a couple arises. I only got the gist of it, but forgot it again quickly. More and more people start yelling, both of them also calling more people to aid their cause, drama explodes like a bomb. I try covering my ears, but I also don't want to let my hot cocoa cool off.

Suddenly, I just put my cup down, I can feel hands dampening the sound from the drama. They are soft, but strong, but I don't try to shake them off as it allows me to finish my cup, without risking my ears with the yelling too long. The hands pull away as I start getting up, can't that couple yell outdoors? I make my way to the exit, pay the unfortunate girl behind the register and walk outdoors.

Silence, then birds chirping happily as always. Then I see the handsome looking man, openly, friendly smiling my direction.

A few days later, we are now dating. The drama seems to have been resolved during that day, as I haven't seen any of them return and such drama hasn't happened again. I think I know I was waiting on him all this time. Everyday is getting a little brighter, a little lighter.

Who is there?

When I heard it the first time it was in the middle of a busy place, lots of people around me but music drowning out most of it. I don't remember if it was a mall or somewhere else. All I know is that suddenly I heard a voice, it was a tiny voice, barely noticeable. After looking around I noticed that it didn't seem like anyone was talking to me, so I just shrugged it off and went on.

The following weeks, whenever I was in a tight crowd I thought I heard the same voice, the same almost unnoticeable voice, easily drowned by the sound of the masses. It never seemed as though anyone around was trying to speak to me, at some point I even checked for extremely small people or fairies even, knowing that those don't exist.

Then the a bit more noticeable voice appeared, also both voices appeared in less crowded areas. Slowly over weeks, months, almost a full years length long, the voices became more demanding, louder, more and appeared in increasingly less crowded areas. I noticed I couldn't understand what the voices were saying. All I could do was listen and notice that they all used different sounds. The more I listened the more they sound like different animals warning calls.

I'm now trying to come to safety. I'm running, jumping, sweating. I don't know what I'm running from. "Who is there?" I ask towards the shadow, trying to give my trembling voice all the strength.

"The end" the shadow whispers, suddenly being everywhere. "But be not afraid, for I don't mean necessarily your end."

Silence. Absolute, unquestionable, unbreakable silence befalls the dark void around me. Then, as if it always existed, a mirror appears. It is an old a bit dusty mirror, but definitely one of the more valuable mirrors of days, long gone forever. It's wooden part is crested with a sun at noon, a pair of lucky dice and some other odd things.

Was it an eternity or was it seconds, the mirror plain starts growing. First it's a puddle, then it grows to the size of a lake and still growing. I turn around, try to run, but there I see I'm on a silent black island in a mirroring ocean, with nowhere to run, no place to hide.

I decide to atleast meet the end upright, start walking towards the ocean of mirror and start walking into it. It feels warm like a lovers touch, softly playing around me while I move. At some point I black out.

When waking up the first I see is my future employer. At first I don't understand him. "I'm sorry", he says, " But I need to make sure I don't hire spies. Congratulations on passing the secret last test. The last year and a few days you perceived where all simulated. Again I'm terribly sorry." I immediately just fall back asleep. It is a deep, dreamless sleep, but I sleep.

For @flashfictionfridayofficial finally after some time another story from me :)

The World Cup

It was already past dawn, but it was still training, after all it made it to the quarter finals. If it lost from now on it could never return and it doesn’t want to have to stay away. Luckily only one win in the quarter finals in a lifetime is needed to be allowed back.

It begins moving towards the sleeping spot again, the ground tremors a tiny bit with every step it takes. It curls up, weaving over, under and around it’s long slim body. After a short time, silence, followed by an earth shattering snore.

The next day, the day of the quarter finals, it wakes up early and immediately goes on the earth shaking trip to the stadium. It paces a little before the door, then finally goes inside. This stadium is huge, possibly to fit anyone while allowing for some movement. ‘Luckily this is a war of wits and not of might‘, it thinks. The door it just came through closes with a bang and the door on the other side opens, allowing a horrifying monster the way in.

The other monster seems as large as a hill, and dangerous, but beautiful like a snow avalanche when you can’t hide from it. The other creature mumbles a “hello“ and something along the lines of “why is this so damn early“, and when it does it is like thunder rolling through the hall.

The creature we followed so far is shortly taken aback before returning to its usual state. It looks towards the platform in the middle. A human is standing atop, greeting the greater human and non human populace.

A little while later our creature won in the quarter finals. On its way home, it leaves a small crack every now and then from small happiness jumps. After it gets home it starts learning for the half finals, but now while knowing it can return to this great battle of wits and knowledge anytime, even if it should loose.

The Pearl

I'm standing in place, like I've done for centuries. I hold my hands out to the front. Carefully hold a small, mostly blue pearl in them. There's also green and brown parts.

The pearl amazes me. And I fear for the time I can't hold it anymore. The pearl doesn't seem to notice my presence, but seems to believe, that it's turning around a bright, yellow, golden, orange pearl, following invisible paths.

I can feel my body wanting me to move again. Soon I tell my body. I can feel how the pearl seems to get heavier, the aching in my arms, the endless white closing in around me.

The pearl is my only color here, if it falls it will break, but if I hold it to long it will be broken by the organisms living their lifes on it, slowly turning their air and water, their life sources into toxic, dangerous mixtures.

I need space, I need more space, I take a deep breath, then open my hands. The pearl will float some time, long enough for me to go away, maybe long enough for its life to find a way to keep it from breaking. I jump around the space, the white void welcoming me back, expanding back, giving me space to walk again.

I wish the pearl all the best, but I can't hold it anymore. I need to walk, need to explore my space, always hoping to find a new space, something not white. There is no sound accompanying me, but the whispers of the space.

Empty Battery

"Good morning Kyle. This is your reminder to drink enough water today and to not forget to take your oxygen when going out." SAM's morning call. A couple of years back earth's pollution has gotten so bad that there's barely any breathable oxygen. New kinds of plants have been evolved by corporations, but the companies expect an extreme amount of money from countries who want those plants.

So basically nothing has changed except that you now have to buy oxygen to survive going outside of a pressurized home.

I work in one of the nowadays many oxygen farms. It's become a very complicated process and every day that goes by we need to extract more. Earth wasn't able to support us already before we made her unhospitable to ourselves.

In the farm everyone is busy as always. We are within the lucky people as these oxygen farms supply themselves, so we don't have to pay our employers for the oxygen.

Suddenly everyone panics. After a few minutes of trying to understand why, I notice that the radio has gone silent. It's one of the older ones, that still requires batteries. None of the new plasma batteries but the old LiPo ones. They have become rare during the last few years.

Someone looks at me, the panic radiating from their eyes, "Kyle, good your here, do you have any batteries?", "Sorry Brad", I tell him, "I just came here, but no I don't, why? What happened to the radio?" He looked me in my eyes "knifey needs replacement batteries, we took the ones from the radio but they won't hold till our shift is over and you know that we aren't allowed to leave earlier"

From this day on we made sure to always have enough batteries lying around, as knifey stopped working after about half of my shift.

Also thx to @lexiklecksi for pushing me to write more for the Tekbury

The Tekbury pt.2

Recently we had found new ruins. An old electrical storage device there pointed us towards a structure we hadn't found yet. From what the stored data could tell us the structure seemed to be far underground. To deep for any of our sensor devices. The entrance hidden behind a very deep natural cave, that we hadn't looked into so far as it seemed to lead nowhere.

Our collective mind decided to send a group of three down there. It took us about three days to get to the point where the structures entry point should be at. We saw nothing but stone. Had our ancestors lied? Was it what they called a joke? Our collective mind decided that the three down in the cave stay another day while the scientific part tries to encode more of the storage device.

It took most of that day, but eventually we found out, that the Tekbury of old used a so called 'material projector' to recreate the stone. Only way to find out which side was fake, was to point a laser pointer against it, as that is the sign for the machine to turn off.

We got into the structure and we're shocked by what we saw. After we passed the entry checkpoint, which wasn't guarded by anyone or anything, we suddenly stood in a large open area that looked exactly like one of the cities they must have had. The buildings were still standing, even the fake sky above the big city was still working.

There wasn't a thing that looked destroyed or even aged. There were a few fully stocked supermarkets, but we didn't see anyone. Not even a single sign of live. It was eerie, almost creepy, to be in such a large lifeless city. We found some pictures depicting families that had lived down here. Still not a singular soul.

Our collective mind was starting to get a bit emotional. It quickly made the decision to get those three out of there and send a full expedition down together with most of the historical part. We didn't find a lot of new informations. The most important was that we found out why there was noone down there.

The families in the pictures had been actors, meant to lure in the wealthy and powerful just so the owner could profit of the societal decline. In the end that had happened faster than anyone expected, but also so slow noone noticed it. So none of the ones that paid to be safe down here had the time to get here.

It still was a great structure and it could still serve the purpose of being a city. We decided to settle ourselves in the city. Just in case we above ground would have to fight, our collective mind would be safe for an eternity and beyond.

Also to honor those that created us, in the silent hope, that we'd be better. We honor, by living, by filling this city with laughter and banter, hope and pride.

We will survive.
