Deep in the Bucky Barnes brainrot. Strong feelings about the Oxford comma. 18+. @PaintedDoe on AO3. Always love asks, though I may take a little while to respond.

I’m watching cap 2 again because it is a day that ends in y and god, they keep the winter soldier in a bank vault, and Pierce sits down and tries to reason with him at first - like, for all their arrogance they’re still fucking scared of him. He’s gone AWOL before. He can be unstable, erratic. There’s something in him they can’t control completely.

Pierce slaps his face - a slap, not a punch, an intentionally disrespectful gesture, demeaning, a demand for control and attention. He likes to take these little pot-shots, petty demonstrations of his power. There’s such contempt in Pierce’s face when he says to wipe him, and on Rumlow’s when the winter soldier accepts the mouth guard.

But remember Pierce’s face that split second after he sees the winter soldier in his kitchen. Remember how many guns are pointed at him as he sits their prisoner, supposedly housebroken. They’re afraid of him, and they should be, and they hate that. They need the pettiness to make themselves feel better, to forget he’s never been entirely their dog. They show him contempt for the weakness they forced on him, and they fear his strength; despise him for the control they can exert and the control they can’t. They hate the winter soldier for everything they made him, and Bucky Barnes for everything that refused to be unmade.

“Sadly, SHIELD can’t control everything.” No you can’t, you piece of shit, no you fucking can’t. /spits blood

I love this so much because it speaks to one of the things I always wonder when I watch the movie.  Did Pierce and HYDRA know who the Winter Soldier was?  Did Pierce understand why the Soldier’s programming was shattering, why that breakdown was fixated on “the man on the bridge?”  Presumably, the Soldier has changed hands several times — it’s entirely possible his identity was lost in one of those exchanges, but Zola knew his name, at least, and Pierce was working with Zola; that’s a hell of a thing to leave out of the how-to manual.  He couldn’t possibly have had that much confidence in their programming, given how unstable the Winter Soldier was, period: so was it arrogance that had Pierce sending Bucky Barnes after Steve Rogers, a belief in the impossibility of defeating Project Insight?  Or was it petty rage — the need to prove their control over the Soldier by having him be the one to kill the last of his humanity?

He must have known. They all must have. The Howling Commandos would have been well-known historical figures even before Cap returned - and imagine the explosion of fresh interest afterwards. I think maybe the same fear and pettiness led Pierce to send Bucky after Steve. he’s afraid of Steve too, under the arrogance, so he knew he had to send his best. His best is the winter soldier. Their relationship means either one hurting the other is Pierce winning, getting one over on them, having the power to make it happen, reasserting himself over these two men who he hates knowing are stronger than him. GOD HE’S SUCH A BAG OF DICKS. /hulks out

An interesting demonstration of how the human brain works.

But also something of a lesson regarding perception, and the unreliability of subjective perspective versus objective reality.

You can be extremely certain about how you perceive the world, your "lived experience," that which you "feel it in my heart." But that doesn't mean it's actually true. And it doesn't mean we have to endorse it, or ignore or outright deny objective reality.

That's a "you" thing, not a "we" thing.

shout out to the sound designer who was like "I know exactly what kind of music to whip out for this one!"

If you ever feel like you don't contribute to fandom because you "only" comment—

A regular serial commenter just joined a fandom Discord server I'm on and people are coming out of the woodwork to thank her for her service to the fandom, expressing how much joy her comments on their works bring them.

Remember—they're never only comments.

If you're a reader who gets nervous about leaving comments, please take a moment to read the notes on this post. The tags alone have been giving me life for the past week, and it's honestly lovely.

People who "only" comment are so so important. I recognise the usernames of people who regularly comment on my fics and I love them all. In fact I love anyone who leaves an uplifting comment on my work, whether it's once or repeatedly. Interaction is so important, it's really nice to feel like you're connecting with people via what you create, even if just for a brief moment.
