Thoughts on Macau? I think he'd be an interesting character to think about

💛 MACAU + BRASIL 💚

I know the question was directed to Macau, but it will eventually end up being Maycentric lol since the vision I always bring is the characters' relationships and their interactions with my oc.

In this case, a member of the Portuguese-speaking community and we have a lot to talk about. However, I'm not an internationalist, I know a little about diplomacy and history as a simple hobby. I am not an authority figure.

🎲 MACAU:

My human name for him is Miguel da Silva Xavier/Chan Yee Cheung. Sometimes he may present himself as Miguel Chan. His nickname is Mimi and no one can stop me from calling him like this.

I remember someone a long, long time ago in the fandom giving him the fanon name "Xavier", so it got stuck in me for years, but it sounds better as a surname, in my opinion. So I preserved the Xavier, but as a surname, as a memory, for the sake of that good old-times fanon name, haha.

I baptized him Miguel, fits him better. Actually, Afonso did it, not me xd I am not the colonizer here. 💋

About the Cantonese name... I am not sure if it is correct, I spent so much time researching Cantonese names, and surnames, about important Macanese people, so I could have an idea of names... So, I am deeply sorry if I commited a mistake, if you are Cantonese/Macanese, feel free to correct me. I really tried my best 😔 uff

Lusofam (from Brazil's perspective)

Firstly, nowadays, Mayara barely sees Afonso as a father figure (perhaps due to a kind of resentment that she developed over time). Although yes, in other historical moments Portugal and Brazil have maintained a kind of relationship similar to that of parent-child, but it was a very troubled relationship. And, it's still a complicated relationship. Although, currently, they are on great terms and cooperate with each other. They've been rebuilding a kind of family relationship, but there are still many fights and disagreements; It is very complex to define lol

I know it will sound sad, but May is a bit isolated from Lusofam. Not for the same reasons as the Hispanic American countries, but due to the distance. And because she is not all aware of them.

Brazil is the only country that speaks Portuguese in the Americas. The other Portuguese speakers are too far away to create strong family ties with, although yes, she is interested in getting closer to the Lusofonia, and little by little the relationship between them is becoming closer.

Many of these countries and regions, however, had contact with her at some point during Maylore.

The closest lusófono Mayara feels to having a family relationship (besides Afonso) is Lívia (Angola). With whom I believe she created a true fraternal bond (Brazil was the first country to recognize the Independence of Angola, for example).

HISTORICAL TIES

(Chinese Tea plantation in the Jardim Botânico of Rio de Janeiro)

The first relations between Macau and Brazil took place through trade and architecture through Portugal during colonial times.

(Via: Terra de Santa Cruz)

Chinese Jesus Christ.

"They came in one of the ships that traveled the "Indian route", a trade route between Europe and Asia. The presence of these statues in Bahia may have been the result of a mercantile exchange between Brazil and China. Recôncavo's tobacco was appreciated in the East, yielded profits for the Bahian farmer and enriched the region.

One of the fans of Cachoeirense tobacco would have been the Chinese emperor Quianlong (1711-1799), fourth monarch of the Manchu Qing dynasty, who had relations with the Portuguese through Macau. It is likely that, in this circulation of goods and culture between the two regions, a Carmelite friar, a businessman or a high-ranking official from the Portuguese overseas Empire bought or exchanged the set of sculptures for tobacco, giving them as a gift to the Order. Terceira do Carmo." (Font: A Terra de Santa Cruz, FB)

Leão de Fô decorating a church located in João Pessoa, Paraíba.

This is a Chinese-looking statue. Sculpted by Macau and Goa artists in Brazil. This was a type of called "Arte Achinesada", "Chinese-looking art".

Church of Nossa Senhora do Ó de Sabara, Minas Gerais, with Chinese Pagoda style and Macanese-Goan Chinese-looking art, made by a Goan artist.

This type of art was very popular at the time, and inspired Brazilian artists as well.

The first Chinese Immigrants in Brazil came from Macau:

Now let's talk about what I HC that I believe it was the first personal contact between May and Mimi.

"In 1812, a boat from Macau with tea planters arrived in Rio de Janeiro." First image above in Historical Ties.

"The truth is that there is no consensus on the date. Nor, even, about whether this landing of immigrants was the first contact between China (always through Macau) and Brazil." (A/N: I believe not, due to the infos above).

"Leonor Diaz de Seabra, one of the Portuguese who has most studied the relationship between China and Brazil, points to 1810. The professor at the Department of Portuguese at the University of Macau (and at the Research Center for Luso-Asian Studies) argues that since 1810, tea cultivation began, in the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, with plants imported from Macau and with 200 Chinese to work there."

(Font: PontoFinalMacau.Wordpress)

Macau wanted Brazil

"If there is no [...] scientific evidence in the Macau archives about the date of sending the ship "Vulcano" with farmers from Hebei to Rio de Janeiro, where they dedicated themselves to planting tea, there is no doubt that Macau has been trying to get closer to Brazil for a long time."

(Font: PontoFinalMacau.Wordpress)

This makes me think that, yes, Brazil and Macau may have met each other somewhere during the ~1810~, a little after the Portuguese Royal Court moved to Brazil. This is a HC, however.

(I DIDN'T GIVE THIS TITLE I JUST STOLE FROM THE SITE WHERE I GOT THE INFO OKAY I AM INNOCENT HERE DON'T LOOK AT ME)

CONCLUSION

AS YOU CAN SEE, there is too much to talk about them. But I had to stop here, because it is becoming too long. I would like to put more details. But you can research by yourself (if you understand Portuguese lol, or if I made another post like this, or to correct myself in the future(?).

Macau and Brazil, in my own views, do not have a fraternal bond (like Brazil and Angola, for example), however, this does not mean that the relations between these two are disposable. Quite the opposite.

Macau is a strategic point for closer ties with China, precisely because they have ties that unite them, which is the history with Portugal and the Portuguese language. (I may have read it in an article many years ago, but I don't remember it).

They do not necessarily need to see each other as siblings, but they can maintain a different relationship; like old acquaintances. Like...someone you have a fondness for based on your historical similarities!

Certainly. I don't see any problem with portraying Lusofam as a family in some type of AU, for example. Like, they all being siblings. I myself have already made drawings portraying May and Mimi as adopted siblings. And it is adorable to see them like this.

It is upon you. 🫵 This is just my vision on them. ☝️ I know I talked more about history and shit, but I think this way I could explain better my vision on them.

All the information I used has its fonts and credits.

Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul is currently flooded

I don't make these kinds of posts, but Rio Grande do Sul (a brazilian estate) is going through its worst natural catastrophe in recorded history and I need everyone to know about this. Its currently looking like this:

What is going on

Most of Brazil suffers from yearly floods during the rain season. These floods most of the time aren't bad, with water going away a few hours later. Sometimes they are a nightmare, with people losing their homes and most if not all belongings. But this?

This is not fucking normal.

Currently (May 6th, 2024) there's +80 confirmed deaths and 873 thousand people are being affected by these historical floods. Eight hundred and seventy three THOUSAND people. Once again: THIS. IS. NOT. NORMAL.

Rio Grande has 496 cities, and currently, 364 are reporting problems related to this. It's almost the entirety of Rio Grande - and you know how big Rio Grande is? If you're from the USA, its just a bit bigger than Colorado, and just a bit smaller than Nevada. If you are European, Rio Grande is bigger than the United Kingdom. Can you imagine if almost the entirety of the UK was underwater? Because I sure fucking can just by watching brazilian news!

Rio Grande expects floods. It rains a lot in Brazil. What no one expect is having to deal with 2,30 meters - 7'7 feet for reference - ABOVE the expected flooding level, which is 3 meters (9'10 feet). This means that there were 5,26 meters (17'3 ft) of water. Chart for comparison:

I live in São Paulo, which is completely unaffected by what is going on over there, but I need people to be aware of this. Why?

How YOU can help

A single US dollar is almost five reais. One euro is around 5,50. This may not be much to a lot of people reading this, but literally anything helps. If you donate U$10, it's R$50 for us. If it's euros, then it's R$55,00.

If you can't donate, please just reblog this post.

  • Pix: CNPJ: 92.958.800/0001-38 Banco do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul ou Associação dos Bancos no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul

I want to add another option for donating, as the previous one is the official government one and the governor of rio grande do sul has said most of it will be used later, for reconstructing, according to studies that will be made. While that is still good and important, we need help NOW

This is a trustworthy organization that helped in last years flood and showed accountability for all the money previously donated. They are helping now, with food, medicine, clothes and rescuing:

PLEASE HELP BRASIL

For donations in british pound GBP

For donations in Euro EUR

For donations in US dollars:

As OP said, most of your donations will be multiplied by five, so even your small or average will be FIVE TIMES MORE what an average brazilian can donate!!!!!!!

"I am fine. Do not worry about me."

I have MANY pending books to read, whether diaries, reports, story books, Brazilian Pracinhas and Nurses and much more.  But to save time, I decided to just read a few quick articles to prepare this post.

All pointed here is in a historical view.

Brazil was officially the only South American country to send troops to the conflict under its flag.

Historically, Brazil's actions prevailed in Italy.  It was where Brazil sent its troops, and its participation in the war was delayed as Brazil wanted to maintain its relations with both sides and remain neutral throughout the conflict.  After German and Italian attacks suffered by Brazilian ships, Brazil gave up its neutrality, siding with the Allies.

American military bases were built in the Northeast region of Brazil and Brazilian troops received American training.

"In 1939, with the beginning of the Second World War, Brazil remained neutral, in continuation of President Getúlio Vargas' policy of not defining itself by any of the great powers, only trying to take advantage of the advantages offered by them. Such "pragmatism " was interrupted at the beginning of 1942, when the United States and the Brazilian government agreed to transfer air bases on the island of Fernando de Noronha and along the north-northeast Brazilian coast to receive American military bases (if negotiations had not result, with Vargas and the military insisting on maintaining neutrality, the US had plans to invade the Brazilian northeast, codenamed Plan Rubber).”  (WIKIPEDIA)

"Natal, the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, in northeastern Brazil, has a very important strategic global geographic position. This fact made the city host the two main American military bases during the Second World War: the Naval Base and Parnamirim Field – at the time it was the largest US Air Force base on foreign territory.”  (WIKIPEDIA)

// Getúlio Vargas flirted with the Fascist ideology even tho, he went to ALLIES' side. 💀

HCs: (don't take them too seriously)

⚠️ Remembering the following content: we are still talking about Hetalia, so my HCs and lore are not absolute truth, but my perception of my oc's participation during the conflict.  Even though it has a historical basis behind it.  And also, this is historical fiction (ofc, it's hetalia).  WWII is an extremely sensitive topic to many. I ask for caution, I will be careful with what I have to say.

— Alfred used his charm and charisma to make Mayara fight alongside him (Good Neighbor Policy). What worked and they formed an alliance based on a mutual exchange of interests.

— Mayara had developed a strange feeling that intensified for Alfred (something between admiration and wanting to be like him, a complex feeling, which perhaps was confused with platonic love and which sought certain privileges in that alliance), even if she was reluctant to give end her neutral stance towards the conflict (something similar to what happened in WWI).  She would later do this after torpedoing of vessels by German and Italian submarines, retaliation due to Brazil's accession to the Atlantic Charter;  thus, she broke ties with the AXIS and declared war on Italy and Germany.

— In my universe, Mayara also served as a nurse, and spent most of her time with Alfred, often tending to his wounds.  Sometimes just chitchatting together or learning about militarism and things like that. He trained her. He was the one who supported her.

— I changed my conception of another topic, which was May's direct participation on the battlefield.  I think that Mayara, in addition to serving as a nurse, also fought on the front line when necessary (due to the fact that she was the representative of Brazil) and needed to be on the front line.  In my former HC she didn't go to the front. (I disagree with the 2021 me xd).

—  I don't believe that Alfred reciprocated any kind of feelings for May. She was an important piece for him, and so he courted her, to secure a new ally.  It was a benefits relationship.

— Besides Alfred.  There were FEW times where dialogues with England took place, this was due to the participation of Anglo-Brazilians on the English side (if I'm not wrong, in the area of aviation, but I need to delve deeper into the topic).  An almost tiny interaction compared to the prevalence of Alfred's actions, which was immensely greater and also generated impacts.

i love may she’s so pretty 💛🤏

i was wondering what’s her relationship with her neighbours? i know u have an oc for argentina (i’m not sure if the oficial one it’s the boy or the girl version tho) but idk if u have ocs for the other countries so sorry if the question it’s too much(?

Oh my, thank you so much! I am glad you like my girl 🇧🇷💞🥺

The canonical Argentina of my universe is Elvira (her nickname is Eva/Evita thanks to a mutual of mine) and I belive they have the best developed relationship from all my OCs.

Elvira and May are rivals and besties and yet they share some interest for each other 🤭 but they're not in a relationship. None of my characters are canonically in a relationship.

I just draw Diego/Nyo!Arg and Mayara for fun cuz he has a super silly dynamic with May, which I find fun to work with. But Diego is canonically from Kauã's (nyo!Brazil) universe. They have a totally different dynamic from May and Eva. They're just stupid fanatic football heads lol sorta... bromates. 😆

However, I like drawing my friend's Argentina OCs interacting with May. Personally; I like the different dynamics they can have.

There is a phrase made by an Argentine sociologist to describe their relations: "Argentines hate to love Brazil and Brazilians love to hate Argentina", which I find so funny. I disagree to agree. But I think they both hate loving each other and love hating each other.

I call their relationship "o Samba e o Tango". Thanks to this music

Argentina and Brazil had a troubled past of historical conflicts and regional rivalry. And they're still rivals to this day, mostly in sports, mainly in football. Aha. But also Argentina was the 1st country to recognize the Brazilian Republic (I am not saying it was good or not, this is a fact) and during the visit of the President of Argentina to Brazil (1899), I like to think Mayara took Elvira to the Jardim Botânico of Rio de Janeiro. And they shared a nice girly time. 🥰

Also, I remember reading a funny article saying that Brazil and Argentina act like a divorced couple and it made me laugh for days.

Mayara and Elvira: (based ladies)

KAUÃ AND DIEGO BE LIKE: chaotic creatures

I do have a Paraguay and Uruguay OCs too, which are important for telling May's lore. But I haven't studied enough and further of these countries for elaborating more of them; neither I am satisfied with their designs. They had very complicated moments with Brazil.

I may work on them in the future because they're important pieces to the story. And also, Mercosur/Mercosul gang. 😎👍

I used to have a Colombia and Venezuela OCs, but I don't use them anymore.

SPOILER ALERT

I have a Chile OC too (I showed him already in two drawings)! I desire to write and draw a minicomic of Chile and Brazil. Based on a historical event named the "Last Ball of the Brazilian Empire". Yes, they had interactions together too.

Trivia: I do have a Peru OC. But she never made an official appearance on here, aha.

⚠️ My HC is that May has a complex of big sister towards the other South American countries. She enjoys taking the leadership of things. And she enjoys helping when she can. But I don't think that the other South Americans got this same vision of her. Let's also remember that due to idiom barriers, May is kinda isolated. So, idk. It is sad, aha. May is not always aware of the other Hispanic countries' stuff, for example. She may feel distant from them, to the point she doesn't even consider herself a "Latina" sometimes (will elaborate on this in the future). But she tries her best to approach them, due to her leadership complex. It is too complicated to explain.

EXTRA: beyond borders of South America:

I don't have an OC for Mexico, but I would like to use a Mexico OC to interact with Brazil. They had some interesting interactions during their times as Brazilian Empire and Mexican Empire.

(If you got a nice Mexico oc, tell me—)

ANOTHER OLD ART FORGOT TO POST

I love the idea of this picture actually, but I didn't like the result. I should remake it another time.

This was inspired by the Noh Play "Lampião Noh Inferno" or "Hell Says Noh". It was an interesting Play, and even tho I am not very used to the Noh Theater, I loved it a lot.

I also enjoyed it pretty much cuz it mixes my culture (Northeast culture) and Japanese culture. And it was a wonderful mix!

🍁 PLOT:

Brazil (Mayara) is dressed like Maria Bonita, while Japan (Kiku) is dressed as Lampião of the Noh Play.

The plot of the Noh: Lampião wanted to enter Hell and started to search for his wife. Fought demons and Satan himself to find Maria Bonita.

In my drawing interpretation, Kiku got exhausted after fighting so much to find Mayara. As he finally realized she could be in Heaven.

In the end, Mayara comes as an Angel of petals to him and embraces him in her warm arms. However, she was a demon herself. She just attracted and brought him to hell. (Sadly) Kiku found her, and now, they're together and forever (burning) in Hell. 👺

This Noh play is an adaptation of a Cordel (traditional literature of Brazilian Nordeste) called "A Chegada de Lampião no Inferno".

Here you can watch the Hell Says Noh:

Here is a most known interpretation of "A Chegada de Lampião no Inferno":

You're state ocs are so cute 🤧💕 they look really adorable 🫶 hope to see more of them 🇧🇷

Question: how are their relationships with Maya? So they get along with her or do some have conflict with her? Are there any of them that don't get along with other states? 🤔

OMG I TOOK SO LONG TO REPLY I AM A TERRIBLE PERSON

Thank you so much, my dear! It means a lot to me 🥺💖 I am glad you liked them!

I will give a small glimpse on their relationship.

In a nutshell, they share a pretty chaotic relationship! 😳 Brazil has a history of internal conflicts featuring her states. And moments where she had to confront them and vice versa. Let's say... She wasn't very... comprehensive with them during those moments. ☝️🤓 (I will bring up these topics in future posts about Brazilian History).

May has a complicated relationship with some of her states, but this doesn't mean they hate her or something extreme like that. Some of them may have a perception that Mayara is too childish and irresponsible to be a representative of Brazil.

I believe that Maya's States that may get well along with her are Rio de Janeiro/Rafael (since she basically lives with him, in RJ city) and Bahia/Gabriela, who took care of her when she was a child. Fun fact, they both were her capitals at some moment in the Brazilian Lore haha (Bahia/Salvador, Rio de Janeiro/City of Rio de Janeiro), and they both are the most influential characters in the cultural aspect.

However, I don't consider May and Brasília (her current capital) close enough to establish a strong relationship Country-Capital as she did with Rio, for example. They mostly meet for political and formal meetings/events. Mayara is not very attached to Brasília, in my opinion. And I don't think Brasília minds at all, she is always too busy to care for something so trivial. She does her job, and that's enough. I HC May calls Brasília "corrupt Brat" and Brasília calls her "incompetent air-head".

Also, let's not talk about the problematic separatist movement in the South Brazilian region. 😶

Mayara's and São Paulo complex relations too, let's digger deeper into it next time 👁👄👁

The states does have some regional rivalities. As always. The regions are always fighting each other for something, Northerns vs Southerns, etc etc.

And of course, they've got (kinda healthy? or kinda unhealthy?) rivalities. Rio de Janeiro vs São Paulo, Bahia vs Pernambuco, sometimes, everyone vs Rio de Janeiro, everyone vs São Paulo, Pernambuco vs everyone, everyone vs South states. Ahaha. They're fighting each other all the time. They must chill, somehow. 😭 the only thing these motherfuckers agree on is bullying Acre, claiming that he isn't real. 😭
