TRUTHS I HAVE LEARNT:

1. no one knows what love is; or at least no one can give me a consistent definition. this morning when i asked my mother she said ‘darling, it is the way a breath travels through the body. an essential movement that alters ever so slightly depending on the reason behind the inhale and the strength of the exhale.’ last night when i asked she rolled her eyes ‘love is the reason i havent killed you for leaving dirty socks on the floor.’

2. the stars lie like humans do, but only because they have no voice of their own. all we ever hear them say are the thoughts we think so deep down in the dark that they require the light of a star to unveil them.

3. humans are beautiful but so are storms and i know which of the two i am more afraid of.

i. There’s a corner of my mind where we sleep all tangled legs and cheeks pressed to shoulders and slow breaths.

ii. What I want is your shadow painted on my bedroom wall, my lipstick smeared at the corner of your mouth, your toothbrush in the holder beside mine, my name falling from your tongue in the middle of the night.

iii. There’s a vintage wedding band gathering dust in a locked jewelry box.

iv. I want to take you home to meet my family, want you to understand the ground from which I was born, want you to walk the labyrinth of my history, want to read the library of yours.

v. You run to me in the airport and we sway with the relief of the drumming of our heartbeats knocking together once more.

vi. I want to feel your fingertips against each stroke of ink in my skin, want to thread my fingers through your hair, want to tangle our lives together until we can never pull apart again.

vii. Our white-knuckled clasped hands ache from holding on too tight, nails digging into each other’s palms, but we don’t let go.

viii. I want to forget the word love ever existed separate from our names.
