Announcing Arda Needs More Pride, a bimonthly event aimed at celebrating LGBT+ fanworks in the Tolkien fandom!

Every January, March, May, July, September, and November, the 16th-19th of the month, we’ll be holding a four-day positivity event for all fanworks focused on LGBT+ characters in the book-centric Tolkien fandom. Headcanons, fanart, graphics, podcasts, meta - you name it, we’ll take it! Our long term goal is to foster an environment of positivity and pride in the fandom, since there’s not really anything aimed specifically at fanworks with LGBT+ characters or centering those creators. This is meant to be a low-pressure, low-stakes event; even simple moodboards or one-sentence headcanons are accepted.

The four days are “themed” to the four canonical Ages, with the 16th being the First and the 19th being the Fourth and finishing out the cycle. If you miss one month, you’ve got five more chances throughout the year to submit something, and we’re always checking tags and mentions!

Works meant to feature in the event should be tagged #ardaneedsmorepride or #arda needs more pride, or mention us @ardaneedsmorepride!

If you’ve got questions, our FAQ is here and our ask box is here. This event is being modded by @absynthe--minded and @thefifthbattle; if we need more mods we’ll put the call out!

This event is ON! I’ve been a bad mod and haven’t promoted it much, BUT. We’re accepting all entries now!

The thing with Erestor is that it never occurred to Glorfindel to love him.

Arda Needs More Pride

I’ve really been wanting to participate in @ardaneedsmorepride, but jetlag and school ate up my time for something new, so this time I’ll go the SSP road and throw some of my older fics at the internet.

First Age

In His Absence (Maedhros/Fingon/Fingon’s Wife | M/M/F, poly, rated M) Summary: After the Nirnaeth Arnoediad and its losses, two desperately lonely people find comfort with each other.

Second Age

The Old Maid’s Tale (Tar-Míriel/OFC | F/F, ace pairing, rated T, brief mentions of rape, violence and internalized issues) Summary: Tar-Míriel takes on a new handmaiden, and tells her part in the history of Númenor.

Third Age

Down by the Hallowed Pool (Goldberry/Lady of the Blue Brooch | F/F, rated M) Summary: After rescuing the Hobbits from the Barrow-downs, Tom Bombadil takes a blue brooch from the pile of barrow-treasures to bring to Goldberry, reminiscing about its bearer. This is her story.

Fourth Age

Sunlight Free the Heart (Arwen/Arien | F/F and background F/M, rated T, non-graphic character death) Summary: Arwen at the end of her days. Arien will have none of it.

Some Arda Pride thoughts.

Extensive Valinorean dialectics on whether gender is real or whether the Valar just don’t want to admit that they personally have a preference towards it. There’s only twelve of them plus a few very visible maiar! That’s not a sufficient sample size to determine how pervasive The Gender is.

Dwarves and their seven traditional models of gender presentation; because if something is worth doing it’s worth doing it’s worth doing in sevens.

Númenor’s long history of “sailing partners” who were culturally married and entitled to spousal benefits. You spend a lot of time on the ocean with your shipmates.

Similarly, “shore wives” who shared house, pooled childcare duties, and gave each other comfort while spouses were away. Erendis was rumored to have shared this relationship with various close friends.

The close friendships between gay (cannot bake bread) and lesbian (bake far too much bread) Noldor couples in Tirion.

The inherent eroticism of being a Lord of Gondolin. Absolute icons, pillars and central figures of romantic same-sex poetry for years to come. Gondorian men-of-a-certain-taste defined themselves by which of the Gondolindrim archetypes they fit into (Boromir always considered himself a Galdor.)

A little something feat. Finrod & Curufin for @ardaneedsmorepride - January

*

Finrod isn’t certain who of them begins it – surely, he’d like to take the credit, but it’s as likely that it has been Curufin. Most likely it has been Curufin. Regardless, Finrod pretends it’s not so.

“So?” Curufin whispers, breath ghosting along Finrod’s skin.

Finrod finds it worth noting that Curufin’s voice doesn’t spark icicles anymore, and for that fact he entirely takes the credit for. Curufin hates it and yet he’s like wax in Finrod’s hands when they are like this. It’s admirable – or so Finrod thinks, not caring if Curufin deems it an outrageous tale.

“So what?” Finrod says, smiling that smile that’s reserved for Curufin.

It hasn’t been always like that. But it’s worth noting that more often than not it’s like this in the twilight court of Nargothrond.

Curufin tilts his head up and gives Finrod a hopeless look; just that the look isn’t hopeless at all, challenge lingering underneath it. The results if he accepts vary, but it’s always a success regardless.

“So it has come to my attention, that of late Nargothrond’s king cherishes variety,” Curufin says, leaning up to kiss him. To Finrod, feeling those lips part just for him is utter bliss.

“Pray tell,” Finrod coos, amused sentiment echoing in his voice. “Where has my cousin heard such gossip from?”

Finrod’s own reputation regarding his sexuality doesn’t concern him at the slightest; everyone in Nargothrond knows about their dalliance – and regardless of the disapproval no-one ever speaks about it.

There’s little love for the sons of Fëanor in Nargothrond, and perhaps too much of it in Finrod’s heart.

Dwarven HC

(For the event @ardaneedsmorepride )

It is not that only one-third of all dwarf children were born female. The ratio of male to female dwarves at birth was roughly 1:1. But around half of the 'female' dwarves were trans or non-binary, just as one-fifth of the 'male' dwarves were. After proper gender identities were taken up, it left one-third population as dwarf-women, three-fifth as dwarves, and the rest one-fifteenth as non-binary.

Durin the Deathless was a trans dwarf. That is why he woke up alone without a wife. Later, he did marry a charming dwarf in the first gay marriage among the dwarves and the Longbeard clan was born.
