Fundraiser masterpost

This is a masterpost for the evacuation fundraisers I've vetted so far, a few other fundraisers I find trustworthy but have not been able to vet (inability to communicate with the organizer), and a few semi-completed fundraisers or fundraisers for a different purpose (like house rebuilding, or aid distribution). The numbers next to the names have no significance beyond ease of navigation for me for when I check their progress in the future. You should look at the disclaimers instead and focus on those. Occasionally I will update these with new info, including new fundraisers, and the amount of cash that's been raised. Check in regularly on the original post when you see it being reblogged. In all likelihood once its reached you it's already outdated. Also please don't overlook the Sustainable Aid options near the bottom! The brain drain is already creating problems but having another way of keeping or creating new knowledge and key members of a functioning society is important.

i feel like a lot of the 'i hate kids' crowd would be more tolerant if they understood that due to a kid's limited experience of the world that 4 hour flight might just be the longest they've ever had to sit still for or that trapped finger might literally be the most pain they've ever felt in their short life or they might not have ever seen a person with pink hair ever so of course they want to touch it or nobody's told them yet that they can't run around the museum and they only just learned cheetahs are the fastest animals so of course they want to put that to the test. how were they supposed to know etc etc.

Drunk with vainglory, idiocy or drink,

every male poet does it, ever to the (let’s be frank)

rolled eyes of educated women;

that is, trill blandishments in paean or sermon

endlessly mapping the female form.

It’s ‘your hair lay on the pillow like a sleepy golden storm’,

‘girl of the golden brow’ and ‘soft wet eyes’,

‘sweet rosy breasts’, something dancing like fireflies,

‘the dunes of her arms’ and ‘moonbeam legs’,

hands that are usually dainty and a smile that snags

the heart, their tongues all the time skirting round

the epicentre, where children are made and cocooned,

and its snug vestibule – so obviously awesome,

the bright broken loop of it, tender-plump blossom,

which I, for one, can rifle at my whim.

Gentlemen, I give you: the knicker-dwelling quim.

They are things of some strength, taking regular beatings,

meticulous courtyards, plumy as bulls’ tongues,

and yes, I’ll say it – every vulva is gorgeous,

with their full and cushiony lips, their deep gorges

outdoing the length of both sprawled hand and spoon

and their dark that engulfs all six inches of hard-on.

O, cunt which doth tarry near the swollen arse!

Thou art the desk on which ought be written verse,

and incarnadined sibling to poetry itself,

where the bard remarks: Such a feast beneath her belt !

Genuinely very good translation but for the non Welsh speakers I really cannot stress enough that the original Welsh is the most beautiful, intricate, woven tapestry of exquisite wordsmithing you'll ever read

Anyone know if the line about "hair upon your pillow like a sleepy golden storm" is native to the untranslated poem (I think not?) or if it's a delberate Leonard Cohen reference, or if it predates his lyrics accordingly like as a a turn of phrase that Cohen then used?

It's not.

This translation is extremely good precisely because it's a modernised one - it uses both contemporary references (e.g. knickers) and ones a contemporary audience would consider period-appropriate despite not being (e.g. Beowulf), all in order for a modern reader to get the point Gwerful was putting across. It's also great for conveying that content slide from formal love poetry into pure filth from start to end.

Welsh poetry has its own poetic forms, which are a lot stricter than most English poetry (and a lot more complex). So the one thing the translator can't get across is the meter - English as a language is actually literally not built to accommodate true cynghanedd* (there's a semi-serious theory that Welsh developed mutations to allow cynghanedd more easily, which is funny until you learn the whole thing and then you go "Oh wait, hang on...") This is a cywydd, so it's written to incorporate cynghanedd forms in every line, plus to then have its own number of lines and pattern of syllables and pairs of stressed and unstressed lines; kind of like how sonnets do, but with slightly more rules. And you just can't convey that in English! But the translation you see above is very good, so imagine that, but also written in a rich and sumptuous rhyme scheme that makes your brain fizz.

*In (very) short, it's a system of internal rhyme and alliteration that comes in four main flavours. Longer explanation under the cut.
