Why Rhaenyra’s sons may actually be legitimate IN THE BOOKS

Re-reading the Dance chapters in “Fire and Blood” has led me to question whether Rhaenyra’s sons are actually 100% illegitimate and fathered by Harwin Strong and whether there is a possibility that they are legitimate.

Now, in the show, it is 100% clear that they are not Laenor’s and even if that’s the case, I 100% support Rhaenyra having sex with whomever she wants because I’m not a tradcath. However, I am now convinced that in the books, Rhaenyra’s sons may indeed have been legitimate and the rumors of bastardy was merely used as gossip against her by the Greens in order to slander her and make her ascension into the throne more difficult.

  • The allegiance of the writers

Let us remember that “Fire and Blood” is biased. And no, not in the “i can make up character ages and their relations to one another on a whim,” but in a “maesters are anti-Targaryen, ant-magic, pro-Hightower and pro-Green” way. This entire book is essentially Green propaganda. Hightowers are the patrons of the maesters, so of course they want to show them in more positive light.

Let us see who the authors are and where their allegiances lie.

Eustace:

Septon Eustace, who served in the royal sept in the Red Keep during much of this time(…)As a confidant and confessor to King Viserys and his queens, Eustace was well placed to know much and more of what went on. Nor was he reticent about recording even the most shocking and salacious rumors and accusations, though the bulk of The Reign of King Viserys, First of His Name, and the Dance of the Dragons That Came After remains a sober and somewhat ponderous history.

Eustace is known for whitewashing the Greens and demonizing Rhaenyra on several occasions, for example by insisting that the throne cut Rhaenyra while she was in full armor.

Mushroom:

To balance Eustace, we have The Testimony of Mushroom, based upon the verbal account of the court fool (set down by a scribe who failed to append his name) who at various times capered for the amusement of King Viserys, Princess Rhaenyra, and both Aegons, the Second and Third.(…)Mushroom was thought feeble-minded, so kings and lords and princes did not scruple to hide their secrets from him. Whereas Septon Eustace records the secrets of bedchamber and brothel in hushed, condemnatory tones, Mushroom delights in the same, and his Testimony consists of little but ribald tales and gossip, piling stabbings, poisonings, betrayals, seductions, and debaucheries one atop the other.

Mushroom is more of a gossip girl, but he loved Rhaenyra and supported her.

Munkun based on Orwyle:

Many accounts have come down to us of what was said and done that night. By far the most detailed and authoritative of them is Grand Maester Munkun’s The Dance of the Dragons, A True Telling. Though Munkun’s exhaustive history was not written until a generation later, and drew on many different sorts of materials, including maesters’ chronicles, memoirs, stewards’ records, and interviews with one hundred forty-seven surviving witnesses to the great events of these times, his account of the inner workings of the court relies upon the confessions of Grand Maester Orwyle, as set down before his execution. Unlike Mushroom and Septon Eustace, whose versions derive from rumors, hearsay, and family legend, the Grand Maester was present at the meeting and took part in thecouncil’s deliberations and decisions…though it must be recognized that at the time he wrote, Orwyle was most anxious to show himself in a favorable light and absolve himself of any blame for what was to follow. Munkun’s True Telling therefore paints his predecessor in perhaps too favorable a light.

To sum up: Eustace was a Green, Mushroom was a Black, Munkun is probably the most impartial, but his writings were based on the testimony of Orwyle, who was a Green who tried to show himself in a better light.

  • The seed is strong

Now, let us start by bringing up a subplot in AGOT, wherein a serial cheater Robert Baratheon sired sixteen bastards (per Maggy’s prophecy) and we know of some of them. That all of them had Robert’s blue eyes and black hair led Jon Arryn and Ned Stark to the realization that Joffrey, Myrcella and Tommen were actually fathered by Jaime Lannister.

How does it relate to “Fire and Blood”?

The grandmother of Jace, Luke and Joff is Rhaenys Targaryen, The Queen Who Never Was. Contrary to the show, book!Rhaenys has black hair since her mother, Jocelyn Baratheon, had black hair as well. Show!Rhaenys hair was made silver specifically to take away any plausible deniability to the Velaryon boys and their parentage. Concept art for HOTD shows that maybe that wasn’t always the case, since Laena was supposed to have silver hair with a black streak.

Not only that, but Rhaenyra herself is an Arryn on her mother’s side. Aemma Arryn was Daella Targaryen’s and Rodrik Arryn’s daughter. We have no detailed description of their appearance (save for Daella, who had Valyrian features). Show!Aemma had silver hair of the Targaryens, as if to purposefully take away any doubt we may have about the boys’ parentage. But in the case that Aemma or Rodrik had dark hair, it could have shown itself in the second generation of their offspring, and the same is true for the Baratheon black.

It is possible for two blonde parents to have a dark haired child if such color goes in the family. If indeed Rodrik Arryn or anyone in his family had dark hair, then it is perfectly plausible for Jace, Luke and Joff to inherit it. Same goes for eye color.

And because the Targaryen gene pool was limited due to intermarrying, it is possible that any new gene pool could take precedence over the ones causing Valyrian features to be present.

  • Why the rumors?

The Greens were very insistent on spreading rumors that the children of Rhaenyra were fathered by Harwin.

In 117 AC, on Dragonstone, Princess Rhaenyra bore yet another son. Ser Laenor was at last permitted to name a child after his fallen friend, Ser Joffrey Lonmouth. Joffrey Velaryon was as big and red-faced and healthy as his brothers, but like them he had brown eyes, brown hair, and features that some at court called “common.” The whispering began again. Amongst the greens, it was an article of faith that the father of Rhaenyra’s sons was not her husband, Laenor, but her champion, Harwin Strong. Mushroom says as much in his Testimony and Grand Maester Mellos hints at it, whilst Septon Eustace raises the rumors only to dismiss them.

Why? Because this undermines Rhaenyra, posits her as wanton, stupid, sexually promiscuous, not dutiful enough, slut, whore, basically everything she is called by both the irl Greens and the in-universe ones and clears the way for Aegon. Notice how Aegon sired several bastards, but that is never used against him - because, contrary to what ASOIAF dudebros and their sycophants will tell you, the Dance has always been about misogyny.

Ser Criston Cole spoke up. Should the princess reign, he reminded them, Jacaerys Velaryon would rule after her. “Seven save this realm if we seat a bastard on the Iron Throne. He spoke of Rhaenyra’s wanton ways and the infamy of her husband. They will turn the Red Keep into a brothel. No man’s daughter will be safe, nor any man’s wife. Even the boys…we know what Laenor was.

Funny how Jace is a 🫵 BASTARD 🫵 one second but then he’s the son of Laenor, so probably gay and a pedophile? Freudian slip? Hypocrisy?

More insults used against Rhaenyra to show her as a promiscuous whore who gave birth to bastards and as such, she should not be allowed to sit on the Throne:

Queen Alicent’s greens enjoyed an advantage; the longer Rhaenyra remained ignorant of the king’s death, the slower she would be to move. “Mayhaps the whore will die in childbirth,” Queen Alicent is reported to have said (according to Mushroom)
One-eyed Prince Aemond, nineteen, was found in the armory, donning plate and mail for his morning practice in the castle yard. “Is Aegon king?” he asked Ser Willis Fell, “or must we kneel and kiss the old whore’s cunny?
Lucerys Velaryon addressed himself only to Lord Baratheon. “Lord Borros, I have brought you a message from my mother, the queen.” “The whore of Dragonstone, he means.” Prince Aemond strode forward and made to snatch the letter from Lucerys’s hand, but Lord Borros roared a command and his knights intervened, pulling the princelings apart.
Aegon II was two-and-twenty, quick to anger and slow to forgive. Rhaenyra’s refusal to accept his rule enraged him. “I offered her an honorable peace, and the whore spat in my face,” he declared.
Supremely confident in his own prowess as a warrior and the mightof his dragon, Vhagar, Aemond was eager to take the battle to the foe. “The whore on Dragonstone is not the threat,” he said.

Another important element is that in one of the first drafts for the Dance, Rhaenyra was actually married to Lyonel Strong, Jace, Luke and Joff were his and there was never an issue of legitimacy in that version of events.

CONCLUSION: While it is considered a given that both show and book Velaryon boys are illegitimate and fathered by Harwin, it is not unreasonable to assume that it is merely an element of misogynistic propaganda against Rhaenyra. How ironic that so many of you fell for it, including the showrunners whose every creative decision took away any possible plausible deniability.

And let me remind you, even if they are Harwin’s, that says nothing about Rhaenyra as a person or her capability to rule and if you bleat about bastards being treacherous by nature, that Rhaenyra is a whore, no duty and sacrifice blah blah blah, you are a crypto trad.

Peter gaining the symbiote meant two things for him:

Watching Harry deteriorate further and further while he stood to gain from the symbiote. The feeling of being helpless but in a wholly different way than what hes been used to. You cant punch a disease out of someone.

The trauma he experienced watching May die started to reignite itself in his head. He couldn't lose Harry, too. It'd just be too much. So whatever power the symbiote gave him had to be enough to save Harry. If it wasn't, then he was a failure.

The passion with which he cared about Harry was ultimately his downfall. The feeling of helplessness, like he wasn't strong enough, like he was doing everything for Harrys sake, all exploited by Venom. Every emotion of his goes into overdrive. The trauma around May is cranked up to 11. Because Venom knows if he can just convince Pete, he's better off with the suit, to better protect Harry, then there's no way he'd give it up.

Venom is actively exploiting the love Peter has for Harry from the moment go. And then Venom does the same thing to Harry in reverse.

There's a better text post out there that talks about Harrys feelings of unwantedness and helplessness that Venom exploits and that even after everything, Harry still wants Pete by his side. But it just illustrates to me how good Venom is at knowing that love, real, true, aching love is at the centre of Pete and Harrys relationship.

is there anything physically disabled people can do to help palestine? the protests are all very far away and i physically can't go, but i still want to do something.

yes you literally just need to post, post, post keep posting, raise awareness. thats the number one thing and it matters more than you can imagine. this is from yara eid, a journalist who lost 30 members of her family in gaza:

you can donate to organizers of the posts, especially those who are doing direct action. you can donate to palestine legal which is protecting the first amendment rights of those who speak up for palestine. all of this is just as valuable, if not more, than the protests.

do not donate to fundraisers for gaza. do not donate to anything going into gaza, although if someone is asking for support from outside gaza its more likely to reach them. for the most part it isn't going in and gazans don't want it. focus instead on supporting those who are applying political pressure.

and most of all, don't forget to boycott and prioritize targeted boycotts. here is the quick bds list:
