So Nazis.

Here’s the thing that I don’t get.

Indiana Jones. Great character, hates Nazis. Punches and kills his way through them. Still loved by all. 

Everyone loves Batman! Doesn’t like Nazis. 

Wonder Woman, showing people how it’s done. 

Even the villains don’t tolerate Nazis! 

Like, the Joker is seen as one of the most notorious villains in the DC-verse, and he just is about to beat the shit out of the Red Skull. 

More examples: 

And just the sheer amount of times Captain America, literally a character to signify the freedom of the US of fucking A, has punched Nazis is bordering the line of excessive. 

So all of this media ranging from different decades and companies have all endorsed Nazi punching. However, as soon as this happens:

Everyone loses their shit! “Violence begets violence!” “That isn’t the way to do it” “How dare he attack that man!” “Don’t put out fire with fire!” “You’re just as bad as them if you’re violent!” 

But here’s the thing. It interrupts their platform. It shows that they are not invincible. It shows that they are not protected. It shows that they are going to be held accountable for their spouts of hate disguised as freedom of speech. It shows that there are consequences for their words. 

I’m not saying that I’m going to seek out Nazis just to punch them, but I’m not going to stop anyone who’s doing it either. 

Does art imitate life or does life imitate art? Either way, we should be punching more Nazis.

You know the main problem with the “live action” Lion King? Why it looks so lifeless?

The hyper realistic style is actually limiting the animators, rather than freeing them. The style makes it much harder to have memorable character designs and good expressions. Real lions don’t need to do things like emote in a way that humans can understand – but characters in a film do. The original movie was more cartoony not due to animation limitations of the time, but because that style genuinely serves the story better.

To show you what I mean, compare these two shots of Simba, from right after Scar says “run away and never return.”

Here is a clear reaction, with a strong beat for us to connect with before the character makes a decision. Even without any dialogue, even without any context, you can understand the emotion there just by the expression and the mannerisms. Is it realistic? No! He’s bright yellow and has eyebrows. But do we empathize with him? Yes!

Meanwhile, here is… a lion. Turning and running. No expression, no beats, no character moments, nothing. He actually can’t express himself because the animators are locked into the realistic style. If they tried to animate a strong expression as warranted for the scene, it would look terrible. Is it realistic? Hell yeah! Look at those textures! Look at that fur! But do we empathize with him? …nah. Not really.

To conclude: when you’re retelling Hamlet with a bunch of animated lions, cartoonish-ness is your friend, not your enemy.

Counter-argument: look at this very real tiger cub being pissed at going to the vet:

Maybe animators ARE just lazy.

‘Amphibia’ Gets Early Season 2 Order at Disney Channel

The show, which debuts at 10 a.m. June 17 on Disney Channel and DisneyNow, chronicles the adventures of independent and fearless teen Anne Boonchuy (voiced by Brenda Song) after she is magically transported to a rural marshland full of frog people and meets the excitable young frog Sprig Plantar and his family 

“Matt and his team have created an imaginative new world in Amphibia, with multifaceted, relatable lead characters who throughout the series will experience transformational journeys,” said Meredith Roberts, senior vp animation strategy at Disney Channels, in making the announcement. “We are excited to introduce these new characters as part of our Disney Channel animation lineup and can’t wait for viewers to follow along on their adventures.”

Amphibia debuts with new episodes daily beginning Monday, June 17, through Thursday, June 20. The series will air daily throughout the summer.

A series of shorts, Teen Girl in a Frog World, will begin rolling out in August on Disney Channel YouTube.

In addition, the DisneyNOW app will also unveil an immersive role-playing game Amphibia: Locust Pocus, where players go on quests to help Anne and Sprig fix the damage in Wartwood caused by the locusts.

but, like, it’s a worm. its behavior isn’t that complex.

if it’s not accurately behaving like a worm, how would we tell?

^ an important point. IIRC they don’t even really have a complete characterization of the worm’s nervous system, so C. legogans here is at best a preliminary test. Still pretty cool, though.

I looked at the article, and to my mind the significant thing here is that the lego robot demonstrated consistent behavior with no programming.  They didn’t program any stimulus-response behavior into it.  They just gave it their best approximation of worm neurons, and it made up the behavior.

I may be misunderstanding some aspect of this but to me that feels kinda huge?

They made an artifical reactive set of neurons with consistent observable behaviors. Yeah, this is a big deal. It’s the first step towards ‘uploading’ minds.
